epoxy on my ram and rom
>>108525835Applying epoxy to RAM (Random Access Memory) and ROM (Read-Only Memory) is generally not recommended for several reasons:1. **Heat Dissipation**: Both RAM and ROM generate heat during operation, and covering them with epoxy can impede their ability to dissipate heat. This could lead to overheating and potential damage to the components.2. **Electrical Insulation**: Epoxy acts as an insulator, which means it could interfere with the electrical connections necessary for RAM and ROM to function properly.3. **Irreversibility**: Once epoxy is applied and cured, it is very difficult to remove without damaging the underlying components. This makes any repair or upgrade impossible without replacing the entire component.4. **Practicality**: There are no practical benefits to encasing RAM or ROM in epoxy for typical use cases. While epoxy can be used to ruggedize electronics for specific industrial applications, this is not common for consumer-grade RAM and ROM[1][4].Therefore, it is not safe or advisable to put epoxy on RAM or ROM unless there is a specific need for ruggedization and the potential risks are mitigated through careful engineering.Citations:[1] https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/putting-a-computer-into-epoxy.2576890/[2] https://polyestershoppen.com/info/veilig-werken-met-epoxy[3] https://www.bestbartopepoxy.com/blogs/ultraclear/is-crafting-with-clear-epoxy-resin-safe[4] https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/u5pf4r/i_set_a_piece_of_laptop_ram_in_epoxy_a_while_ago/[5] https://xdaforums.com/t/experience-after-reballing.4569279/[6] https://entropyresins.com/safety/epoxy-safety-tips/[7] https://www.artresin.com/blogs/artresin/41788993-artresin-is-safe-for-home-use

I looked through the EC patch github everyone uses for xx30 ThinkPads, and I saw a list of newer models, so I'd take that as an indication that there's a hardware hwitelist present on those too.

>>108529947Every replacement battery seller can send you a lemon. If they allow free returns, they're legit enough.
>>108528738>>108528963There is a DRM authentication sequence (not just a whitelist, the battery has to answer a random challenge sent by the EC), but 3rd party batteries for post-xx30 models can generally fool the EC into charging them. xx30 was only problematic because Lenovo sneakily changed the authentication sequence without changing the shapes or connectors, so it took a while for the people making them to notice that they shouldn't just relabel their xx20 batteries as compatible with xx30.

My CPU's speed is getting throttled HARD while using windows 10. I have a t440s w/ an i5-4300U.Any ideas? Temperatures are good and I don't seem to be getting throttled when CPU load is high, it seems to happen at random, even when idleBase speed is 2.50 GHz but it throttles to various frequencies, sometimes 2.00 GHz and sometimes as low as 0.79 GHz which is outright unusable. Incoming blogpostI'm nominally the IT purchaser at my job just because nobody newer than me has earned the "privilege" and everyone senior decides it's not worth their time. We used to have discounted pricing with Dell through one of our parent company's shell company's parent company etc. but Dell decided to "replace" all three of my contacts on their side within the last month and now the new contact refuses to acknowledge our pricing agreements or let me talk to his manager(s).The president of one of the subsidiaries I'm responsible for says his Latitude is shit and wants it replaced earlier than our typical hardware life cycle and he wants a Lenovo for the TrackPoint cursor. We normally give general population laptops 5-series CPU (Core i5/5/5 Ultra) with 16GB RAM but my predecessor ordered him an i7 and he insists he actually needs the same for his Big PowerPoints and Big Spreadsheets. To make things worse he promoted his daughter to a management position and she's requesting (and he pre-approved) a Workstation-class (Precision/Pro Max 7- or 9-series CPU with 32-64GB RAM and dedicated GPU) laptop for Big Power BI. She's not a data analyst and her vibecoded projects are already fucking up all kinds of stuff for our sysadmins. How do I tell them they're full of shit without risking my cushy perks being reassigned back to my seniors due to corporate politics.Alternatively what ThinkPads are actually good? It doesn't look like they're as customizable as Dells though the consumer-level/pre-discount prices are actually pretty competitive.

Also easier to clone/backup.Or, it's a built-in backup drive for all of your OS and data on #1. >>108616765x series is really nice but nowadays it's harder and harder to get a good quality battery, 9 cell 6600 mAh battery lasted me 5-6 hours with power saving on linux when it was new. The overheating only really happens during decoding video, and under load, i do lock my x220 to the lowest cpu speed and then it hovers around 50-60 degrees with 1/7 fan speed while using custom curve. if you can get it for like 100 bucks with battery, then it's really damn worth it even for novelty of x series tablets.

I have an x13g2 with i5-1165 and x13g3 with i7-1260p and both cpus pretty much idle at 80-90c and throttle at 100 when doing literally anything. The g2 is plastic bodied so it's not so bad, but the g3 has an aluminum case so that fucker gets HOT. I've done the paste on both with ptm7950 and clean the fan and heatsink fins but even with the fan on full blast it just cant keep up with the heat load. Is this normal for these or is there something else I can do (besides a laptop cooler)? I didn't check the i5, but the i7 does idle at 19-20w tdp in full power mode on win10 which does seem way too high to me.
>>108629847Distro hopping until I find something that I like using, settle on using it for a while. These days I mostly care if the documentation is good and stuff works mostly without fuss. >>108659274Seems fine
My P50 decided it's time to fucking die (boots for ~5 seconds then unceremoniously shuts down). I'm pretty sure it is the motherboard, but rather than going through the hassle of replacing it, I thought of ordering a similar specs one (i7-6820HQ 4C/8T, 16GB, Quadro M2000M 4GB, 480GB SSD), and just salvage the parts from the dead P50 to the second one.But I found this refurbished for 1.6x more and ended up ordering it, seemed like a nice find:>Dell Precision 7560>CPU: i5-11500H 6C/12T>RAM: 16GB (2x8GB 3200MHz)>Storage: 512GB SSD>GPU: NVIDIA Quadro T1200 4GBI wonder if I made a good purchase, it cost around ~1.6x more to get around ~2x more performance, even though this is the lowest end version of this model.Honestly this is meant to be a temporary band-aid solution, I was saving to build a real PC during Black Fraud sales, so my P50 decided to die on me on the worst timing possible, I can't survive 6 months without a computer, I don't know how people stomach using a phone for an extended amount of time.(Actually I could have gotten a turbo budget prebuilt with 12400F + used 1660S or something for exactly the same price and get like 3x more performance, what the FUCK am I even doing ordering another used laptop lol)I mostly play shitty gook MMOs or spend my free time watching anime (with madvr settings as high as possible), if my current usecase matters.
>>108635559my precision has a blue nipple. it has a xeon e3 and a quadro m2200 for $145 when i bought it a year ago. so far it's my favorite laptop i've owned. it's very sturdy but the fans are kind of loud. overall 8/10.
>>108659274The RAM alone makes it a great deal
>>108661696can't tell if you made a good deal but if that makes you feel any better you should have one of the better performing Real Business Experience™ laptops around herewhy not get a gaming laptop at this point though
>>108526242coreboot are for nerds who think that government is spying on them watching hentai porn. unless you are working on government secrets or you are a targeted activist, you shouldn’t care about it. Believe me, it’s not worth it.
>>108652619I have a gaming laptop, I used it so little compared to my Thinkpads that it became my home server since I had no other use for itwhen I want to game I'd rather just use my desktop
>>108662244>why not get a gaming laptopI don't really feel the need, I am already building a proper gaming PC by the end of the year anyway. I mean, I was already comfortable with my dead P50 for my current usecase until then, so I didn't even need the upgrade. I was in a hurry and it just seemed like a decent deal (I just wish it was one of the 8C CPUs, now that would have made it a major killer deal). Also gaming laptops are all built to be disposable as far as I'm aware, I prefer the modularity of these business workstations.
is having an internal battery for the t480 worth it? or is it too small to make much of a difference? is the external 72wh battery enough?
I'm debating whether or not to buy a new framework 13 pro or one of the new thinkpads coming out this year. I need a laptop that works well with linux, can do some light gaming (mostly tf2) and good battery life that can last me the entire day. Money is not a problem and I'm willing to shill out a lot of money for a framework if I get a quality product.
>>108664891T14 gen 7 Intel is supposedly got the all day battery
>>108664891If money isn't the problem, why would anyone choose Thinkpad over Framework?
>>108664891Framework laptop doesn't have replaceable USB-C ports, they are all soldered to the motherboard.
>>108663634It gives about 2 to 4 hours depending on how you use it. I'd say it's worth it if you can get one for $20 or less.
And now for a cautionary tale>waiting>chinkpad I seek finally gets listed>only 16gb soldered>battery condition unknown>refuse to pay inflated price>waiting
I know nothing about thinkpads but I am looking for a laptop and saw these two listings recently>t450 8gb i5 256ssd @ 100 euro>t14s 8gb i5 500ssd fhd @ 170 euroAre these good prices/pics? I mostly just watch youtube and movies on my tv via hdmi
>>108667812I'd try to talk the T450 down to 70-80€
>>108667812are the movies and youtube that you watch in 4k?
>>108665694Skill issue. Learn to solder it’s easy as fuck. A child in China can do it why can’t you?
has anyone ever put a glass screen protector on a matte display before? asking for a friend with a fucked lcd
>>108668203No, I have an addon that forces youtube to use 720p resolution. The pirated movies are always 1080p though, sometimes in hevc format
>>108525780my system specs 512gb ssd 16gb ram and 2gb ryzen igpu ,cant run a 20 yr old game like gta v above 20 fps on this shitter don't bother
just got a $200 x280, i5, 16gb, 256 ssd, 1080p touch, my first thinkpad ever. the [ key doesnt work, i tried cleaning it but still nothing. Besides that the touchpad is peeling off but I plan to replace it with a x1c touchpad anyways. having fun with linux.
>>108526242The glowies cant get into your computer as easily if you use it.
Got myself a T460 coming in the mail. Any tweaks and mods I should know about? Is there any way I can have a dual boot with separate drives on it? Devuan or LMDE?
>>108673834xx60 generation is a cursed generation where you can't put a second SSD on WWAN slot. I mean it's not a bad machine, but T440p, T470, T460p and T470p are the superior options if you want to try the slimtip charger T series.for some reasons T460 still use DDR3L too, while the X260 is already on DDR4.

It's a travesty that we'll never get 7 row keyboards with ryzens
