Got a text from my supervisor that the company would be "offering" (so far, it might become mandatory) a punch in/punch out app for our personally owned cellphones and I immediately told him I'll stick with the landline phone we use to clock in/out for work.I'm a school custodian and so we're all at different schools and use a conventional landline phone in the office to punch in/out for work and lunch, using a personal pin number with the system knowing from the phone we dial out from, that we're actually at the school on time when we punch in.My issue is that who the fuck knows who made this app or what it might do to my phone? It could be (and probably is) from some fly-by-night Chinese or Indian company and could (and probably will) endanger my $600 iPhone by uploading some kinda virus or the app just fucks up and bricks my my phone or the app may be used by hackers in Bangladesh to access my bank account or steal my identify and in addition, it will have to include tracking software to insure we're actually at work when we punch in and not lounging around at home.Again, this is MY personally purchased phone, the company does not issue us phones and I refuse to download some half-ass app from who-the-fuck-knows-who and further more, some people (very few nowadays) don't have cellphones and thus the company should have to retain the landline clock in/out process. How do I got about telling my employer I will not download this app?(I also posted this thread to /advice/)
you're gonna get canned lmao
>How do I got about telling my employer I will not download this app?i think the best option would be your notice letter

>>108710243>workforce management tools they require. This was not a requirement when they hired me and it's my "tool", I bought and own the cellphone, the company does not provide us with one. This is a facility management company, they did not write the software nor can they vet it to insure Apu Nahasapeemapetilon in Mumbai isn't hacking my phone. >>108710307>school custodian? that gov jobNo, only teachers are government employees nowadays, all the support staff (custodians, lunch ladies, etc.) are contracted out to private companies.>your best bet is to sell your phone or something, so you no longer own a phoneI figure if push comes to shove, I'll tell them I no longer own a cellphone and they can either retain the landline clock in/out system or provide me a company phone (that I'll leave at the school).>>108710322>are you required to read text or recieve calls other than daily supplies delivery requestsI'm not aware that I'm _required_ to do so, it was never mentioned when I hired in two years ago, though I have received and sent texts to the supervisor and manager during this time.
>>108710360>This was not a requirement when they hired me and it's my "tool"tell me Mr Custodian, how many new systems, process and regulations are you adhering to without them being a requirement when you were originally employed?
>>108710360most of your peers are also poorfags so its very likely that its a bigger issue that you thinkthat being said, if it is truly a dealbreaker for you (you'd quit over buying a 2nd phone) then yes saying you no longer own a phone makes sensehowever it is still not healthy to lie, which is why you should sell your phone, "do what jesus (richard stallman) would do" would give you complete clean clean conscious

I have an app like that at my job.The problem with it isn't that it does anything bad. The problem is it doesn't work sometimes for a variety of reasons and you have to clock out the normal way anyway.
>>108710404>tell me Mr Custodian, how many new systems, process and regulations are you adhering to without them being a requirement when you were originally employed?None that require me to use my personally purchased and owned property.
>>108710192I've always wondered how those work. Do they work exclusively through the app or is there a way that use a browser to handle the clocking in? I'd rather not run their stuff on my device.
>>108710192Overreaction.It's probably just ADP or one of the many HR/bookkeeping vendors. There might even be an online version you can access.I can imagine your reaction justified if your personal device had to become part of an organization's network with Microsoft intune or some shit.
>>108710500>It's probably just ADP or one of the many HR/bookkeeping vendors. We use ADP.>There might even be an online version you can access.Ah, now there's an option. We have a computer in the custodian office but I don't have a login, as I'm the night shift guy and don't need one.Heading to work now, I'll check back tonight when I get home.
>>108710412reactions to my flipphone vary but the most common is for them to show me their smartphone as if i've never seen one and didn't make a conscious decision not to buy one
>>108710192most of these are webapps with alternative browser access anyway
I wish my company used those satisfying paper punch things instead of the boring electronic RFID thing

>>108710192you can use online tools to analyze the IPA, but you need to learn a thing or two. or you could pay someone to do it for you (look for "mobile security test" on fiverr or some shit)maybe talk to a lawyer and ask them if your employer is allowed to force you to install random apps.
>>108710192You're not wrong. 99% some smelly scammy jeets with shit under their fingernails made the app. Unfortunately the world always gets worse. Never better. The walls are always closing in. It's a one way street. You will be forced to capitulate.
>>108711381you're lucky they're not resorting to face scanning and fingerprint sensors because you live in a low trust society

>>108713327idk, the paste is messed up, but the trick is simple, you can use low power mode when you're not working, to limit the app. It can be automated.
>>108712914He gets paid though.
>>108710192Get ready to put your two weeks in because this is usually an excuse to start canning employees. They're just trying to see who puts up with it. They'll start requiring more apps, more sign-ins, more check-ins, eventually they'll have GPS telemetry on your phone. My advice is to buy a "Work" phone, cheapest android phone you can get from your nearest store, put the app on it and leave it someplace safe. Set a timer on it or remote in to it using rustdesk to clock in/out.
>>108710521(Back home now and) my supervisor said the app is mandatory and they want to know tomorrow.I can't see how I can be compelled to use my property (and risk whatever possible problems this causes me) for THEIR business?I'm going to tell them I no longer have a cellphone.>>108711007>reactions to my flipphone varyHow much is a cheep flip-phone and can I use the same number from my smart phone?I actually have an old iPhone 7 in the drawer but recharging it was getting more difficult, as the charging port inevitably gets blown out. >>108710192sorry anon, we gonna let you go, you are not good with modern technologiesBefore you leave please teach everything to your replacement Mr. Sukdeep, he is eager to use all the modern technology of today, he has no problem installing this app on his personal phone and also has programming bachelors degree from prestigious indian university Durgasoft

>>108710192>if you require me to use a phone for work purposes then you need to provide itjust leave it plugged in at your desk next to your landline phonemy boss last year replaced all of our door handles with thumb print locks imported from aliexpress or temu or something. i told him my thumb print was my personal information and i would not use it. after a week of arguing he told me that after discussion with the company lawyer they would provide me a physical key to bypass it. chinese battery powered wifi thumbprint handles are now in a pile in the junk room.don't explain anything, don't justify yourself, simply tell them directly: you must provide a phone if you want me to use it for work.Show me in my contract where i'm required to provide a personal phone to clock in. it will say something about being reasonable. simply state you don't believe it is reasonable. refuse to explain why.
>>108710192First things first.Since you are using an iphone and there is an ios version of the app, then, likely it will be safe, considering how apple loves their closed garden system. But as other anons suggested. Demand a work phone. My work required the use of onedrive to upload our work photos from phone(im a mechanic)I noticed that one drive could access files on my phone despite me prohibiting onedrive access to phone storage in android settings, so i said to my boss that i have privacy concerns and that i wont be using onedrive on my phone. Now i have some chink android that stays at my work that i use for work purposes

You are a janitor. Just act dumb and say you don't know how to do those things. Get a $10 dumb phone and play dumb. Look up your local university they usually have low cost/free legal advice programs to get advice. If they canned you and didn't provide you a phone you could get years and years of salary through a lawsuit.
>>108710192They legally have to give you a work phone. My job site had a Kiosk but people got in trouble for signing in too early or not signing out early enough, but you would violate the policy by just by waiting in line to use it.
>>108715350Being paid for time spent working is rarely enforced in any way that actually benefits you. Complaints to the state's labor board or whatever usually result in you getting a pittance and having to find a new job.

>>108710192does an iphone have a sandboxing solution? a thing to limit an apps access to stuff.
I once got a job where they told me I needed to install some company apps on my personal phone. After not doing it for a few days they called me into a meeting with my boss, his boss, and the HR lady. They asked me why I refused to install the apps on my phone, I just pulled out my flip phone and said "Sorry, my phone doesn't let me install apps"They were all kind of surprised and said that makes sense. They seemed like they were going to discipline me though. They said they would figure something out and let me go back to work. The next day the bosses boss sent me an e-mail and said they are going to be adding $150 per month to my paycheck to purchase and use a smartphone of my choice and that the only stipulation is that I put the work apps on it.If I would have been rude or refused they probably just would have fired me.
