What should I do with bookmark.baks? Just import them into my current browser then delete the bak and save the new one?
>>
I have not pirated a movie in probably 15 years. I'm going on an international flight soon with no in-flight entertainment, so I want to load up my laptop with some movies. Where do people download movies or TV shows nowadays?
>>
>>108738022
Honestly, you're better off taking a book or just downloading some long form youtube videos at this point.
>>
>>108738022
1337x, torrent galaxy, kickass torrents. rutracker has probably the biggest selection but it's harder to browse.
>>
>>108738021 (Me)
Apparently I can't import the bookmarks for some reason...? I had a .bak and a .txt and converted the .txt to a .html to import and it didn't work, there's 186 pages in that .txt and I don't want to spend hours manually adding them, what do?
>>
>>108738021
i don't understand the relation to what you were talking about before, but if you're trying to restore bookmarks, yes you'd import them from a file in the manage bookmarks interface of whatever browser you're using. typically your browser is going to expect a different format; firefox actually has two different menu depending on what format you're restoring from (restore and import).
>>
>>108738076
by "converted the txt to a html" what do you mean, did you just rename it to html? that's obviously not going to work, your browser expects the html file to be in a particular format.

.bak doesn't mean anything, it's just a way people refer to backup files, you'd want to try and figure out what type of file that actually is. you could open it with a text editor and if it's plaintext you can probably figure out what kind of file it is that way. otherwise you'd want to check the magic number.
>>
>>108738105
>did you just rename it to html? that's obviously not going to work, your browser expects the html file to be in a particular format.
No I opened it with LibreOffice and did "save as... > .html" under filetype.
>>

Is there a place I can go to learn about computer file archiving? I have a copy of all of my files on an external drive but what if that external drive fails? Should I just buy another external drive to store the files or should I store them a different way? What about files that I archive but the only copy is on that external? Should I separate them from the other archive files? They are generally sensitive information like tax returns and such.

best thing i've found is to set it to run in small mode, restart, and then close the small mode window and just run the game from the context menu from the tray icon. it still spawns at least one steamwebhelper process but at least it's not like 50.

Asking here because /hpg/ doesn't seem to be a thing (anymore?).
I need your help bwos... I think I'm gonna cry with how disappointed I'm at my Sony XM4's compared to my old Razer Opus X. I held it in for 6 months thinking they're better, but no, I miss my fucking shitty cheap gaming headphones with dubious ANC and muddy sound. The XM4 are unusable when wireless, I play a video on youtube, an anime/movie on MPC, or play a game, and the delay just kills any immersion I might have. I have to plug them in and power them on to get 0 latency and good sound, which ruins the purpose of WIRELESS HEADPHONES! My Opus X had 0 latency even with Bluetooth, no, HAVE, because I still have them despite the fact they're falling apart due to a shitty hinge design. I'd buy a new pair, but apparently they're discontinued, fuck my life.

What the fuck do I buy? Budget 100-200 euro, used is fine, wireless headphones with low latency for gaming on a Windows 11 PC, should sound no worse than the Opus X, ideally better. The XM4's do NOT sound amazing, they sound fine, the highs are really "prickly" and the bass is a bit too weak, but they're decent overall. Okay for the 125 euro I paid, but not for gaming or movies.

Look groups/forums on your city/suburb then ask what's good. Maybe ask your neighbors what ISP doesn't suck when you move in.

I didn't ask why anyone would use that. I asked why anyone would maintain that. I am trying once more to get pi-hole setup. its not working right.
I have it installed on a 2nd gen i7 hp laptop running Mint. it did not like fedora or ubuntu
the laptop has been reserved on the router, I can log into the pihole admin page.

I am using a TPLink router, and when I follow the instructions here:
https://discourse.pi-hole.net/t/how-do-i-configure-my-devices-to-use-pi-hole-as-their-dns-server/245
to setup the laptop's IP address as the primary DNS server, my internet creeps to a very slow pace.
2nd method says to use dnsmasq. I cannot find this setting anywhere on the router.

What am I doing wrong here?
The pos laptop, even though its an i7, only has a 100MBit ethernet port. Is this the bottleneck?
>>
>>108745454
make sure it's connected via a wired connection to the router so it's not trying to resolve shit over wifi. try pinging the laptop from another device to see if there's some sort of latency issue.

also consider checking out adguard home, i believe it's better-maintained and easier to set up these days.
>>
>>108745694
I have it hardwired and wifi is disabled.
I can ping the laptop no issues there
I am trying method 3 where I manually configure DNS on each device (testing with a win11 laptop) its DNS is the same IP as the laptop but when i check the pihole console, there are no clients. internet is working fine on the win11 machine. ipconfig shows correct dns server
>>
>>108745733
nm about the client list, that is not what i thought it was.

i manually configured DNS on a test laptop. I see through the pihole console that its filtering traffic. I tried youtube.com on the laptop and its playing all the ads via incognito mode with all extensions disabled.
tried an adblock test website, shows 70% ads blocked.
same test on a different machine using ublock origins shows 2% blocked.
so i guess its working but not for youtube?
>>
>>108745763
dns adblockers are more limited in functionality as they can only rely on blocking based on hostname and are therefore often unable to block youtube ads because google deliberately tries to break adblockers on youtube. browser adblockers have more functionality to work with and are better able to do so.

>>
>>108745788
I can combine both then, no?
I already have YouTube Premium since I mainly watch that, I was merely testing it without logging in.
I want all other ads to be blocked on all devices that are connected to my network. like my cheapo friends who has HBO Max with ads and anytime they come over to stream something I have to stare at ads.
and I want to use a normal android browsers and not see stupid ads on my phone.
I google a product on my desktop and my roommate starts seeing ads on his FB for the same shit.
I want to eliminate that
>>
>>108745842
>I can combine both then, no?
yes
>>
>>108745972
ok, great
well its not stacking.
if i use chrome with ublock, it says its blocking only 7% of ads
if I disable ublock, it says its blocking 70% of the ads
android wont let me setup an ip address as a dns server. dns.adgaurd kinda sucks and still slips through ads.

What is a good way to figure out compatible replacement PSU's? I have a prebuilt dell and haven't been able to nail down a good way to figure out what PSU's are compatible with it. The compatible parts section of dell only lists ram and a data cable, the service manual makes no mention of it. I called dell and the robot said my the equivalent of "tough luck" since my desktop has been out of warranty since July 2021.
I suspect my PSU is failing since my hard drive has recently been randomly disconnecting and reappearing on restart. I did get a new hard drive and transferred over my files but now I know that its not a hard drive problem since the new one is disconnecting instead of the old one. I think I should be able to replace my PSU just fine I just need to know which ones would actually work with my system.

>>108746586
Search 'dell psu adapter' + your model and hook it up to the closest standard size PSU. Typically it's not worth the trouble because you can just buy a new mini PC or another used SFF for not a lot more than the cost + effort of replacing a proprietary SFF PS.

Ideally you'd go configuring the DHCP advertisement the router hands out to your local DHCP clients. The Pi-Hole's IP as a DNS server should be in that advertisement, not the way you are currently configuring it: making the router use the Pi-Hole as a parent DNS. Two different things.
Or how about configure all your clients manually instead of using DHCP? How many devices you have in your home?

I'm planning on moving files from NTFS on Windows to Linux with a CoW filesystem, I have a lot of hardlinks but I want them to be reflinks in the destination. I see
rsync -avH

I've had a laptop sleeve for like a month or two, but it's just a little bit too tight along the axis of the shorter edge of the (closed) laptop.
Recently one of the keys has been occasionally getting stuck down for a fraction of a second and when it comes up it makes a loud clacky noise. Could it be related to the sleeve?
It could just be debris, but I tried blowing it out and it didn't help (I don't have an air compressor).

I'm new to Linux and using CachyOS I have been doing pretty well with Groks advice and using YouTube but I have a problem and that is I don't know why the emulators I install won't save game data files to their directories in the home config folder anybody you know why
>>
>>108751271
>won't save game data files to their directories in the home config folder anybody you know why
>the home config folder
You mean ~/.config specifically? idk shit about emulators specifically but Linux programs don't always follow the ~/.config (or ~/.cache) convention, it's not set in stone. Older convention is to use ~/.program where "program" is the name of the program. On top of that they might save their files in completely arbitrary locations.
Consult the user manuals of those emulators, they usually point out which locations are used.

I downloaded a discography off of nicotine+ a couple years ago and only recently realised I downloaded it into a folder with a bunch of other songs, so the order is all fucked up and they're not in the right folders. Tried using MusicBrains to sort them into the correct folders but it didn't fully fix them all, so I just want to redownload them.
I know the account that I downloaded it from originally, but they don't seem to be active so I can't redownload them directly. Supposing they haven't died or forgot their password and will eventually come back, is there any way to have my client open up whenever they're online or something?
>>
>>108751444
rather than waiting potentially months or years for some random asshole to remember their old filesharing password and come online for nostalgia's sake, just set a 10-minute timer once a day and start manually sorting the files

it may take a few days or even a week depending on the size of the discography, but 10 minutes is fucking nothing and relaxing for a few minutes while you sort your music collection every day is objectively healthier for you than doomscrolling on whatever the fuck social aids platform people use nowadays

You do realise bluetooth radio transmissions are normally under 10 meters for anything other than a garbled mess. If you're unaware someone outside your front yard is trying to **checks notes**... gain access to your keyboard? then you're either not paranoid enough or are too retarded to be properly paranoid.

Bluetooth requires a handshake to pair, and if you're trying to be real careful then just make sure the device is untrusted and needs a green-light from your host machine to connect every time. I'm curious what made you think ultra short range radio transmissions are any less secure than WiFi for instance.

Also what is the actual usable surface area for a 3.5" HDD platter?

It's clearly not simple math because of unknown factors like the mounting in the center to the spindle and edges are turbulent so they're not used either, so I'm expecting a considerable usable size increase for 2.5 vs 3.5.

There's almost no instance where running with a case closed gives better cooling than with it open.

Really dumb question, but why do modern Windows systems use so much RAM for background tasks? My dad was having a problem with his PC today and I opened the task manager for a moment and noticed that the system was using 35/64gb of RAM, with the majority being used by Windows, about 11gb used by Google Chrome, and the small remainder used by the actual programs he was using. Does Windows actually perform better on his system than it does on another one with only 16gb of RAM?

So. You'll simply check what's your "defaulf gateway", that's the phone's IP and then check Flud+ settings page on the port.

The USB tethering could be artificially limited to something like 100Mbit/s.

I learnt this from examining the compositoin of the tiny spray cleaner from my glasses, which i now refill regularly with just medical alcohol and water
NEVER use toilet paper, because toilet paper is made to disintigrate as to not clog toilets, so its a bad choice for any type of cleaning as it will leave tiny bits and pieces

are there any downsides to mechanical harddrives as a long-term/archival storage
>>
>>108757653
mechanical drives have parts which can fail, however if you're just storing shit on them and then removing them from an enclosure to sit on a shelf for decades and decades they'll be perfect. it takes a very long time for mechanical drives being used every day to cause them to fail, though.

SSDs have no moving parts, meaning no physical parts that can break, but SSDs can still fail, and if you leave an SSD on a shelf for a decade then bits start flipping on their own. I think it's like electrons start migrating around the drive when it's unpowered for too long or something.

Basically don't worry about it. HDDs and SSDs are both good. I use seagate drives for storage and I've never had one fail me in 11 years.

Anything with a local regulatory cert should be fine. The only difference between cheap and up-market brands is how loud they run and how fancy the monitoring software.
