This guy (>>108732659) here again. Ryzen 7 came in, turns out my lovely prebuilt that I bought during Covid does not support it (Even though I checked and apparently it could but now I'm finding tons of things saying the opposite) and a mobo change means I also need a brand new PSU and case so I'm going to AM5. Before you ask, yes, BIOS update, CMOS clear, the lot. It's unsupported.

What are my options with a budget of about $1000 with some wiggle room? I'm looking at 1080p as my primary focus with the ability to go to 1440p and maybe 4K in the next few years when I get a new monitor but 4K isn't super necessary. I need something that will be able to weather the storm for at least 6 years or so at 1080p. Do I keep my 3070 until I can afford another GPU?

I need some sort of black case I can maybe upgrade my GPU with down the line, I need a minimum of two HDD bays, more would be nicer, I need an NVME slot, I need a PSU that can potentially support higher tier GPUs, I need a CPU fan, and I don't want RGB if at all possible. I'm fine with 32 GB total of RAM as I can wait for a price drop. Any help here? I am way out of my depth for this and even with pcpartpicker I feel like I don't know what I'm doing.

I have an NVME I'll just transplant along with my two HDDs, I think I have a bluetooth or wifi card in this thing I can rip out of it but I'm not sure, but that's about it.

HP 87C3 (Moria3). It only supports four specific CPUs which I only found out through this process because I thought the same thing and when Googling before I bought this thing people said it would work.

>>
>>108740696
Yes, I've already grabbed it and installed it but it still doesn't provide a display whatsoever, that's why I'm asking here for AM5 parts now. The machine boots but I never get a display at all and everything I've Googled about this points to the BIOS not supporting it, the mobo itself not supporting it, or needing a CMOS clear. I've updated the BIOS, and cleared the CMOS, and then found stuff like
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Gaming-Desktops/Questions-regarding-upgrading-an-Omen-desktop/td-p/9388191
stating it only supports specific CPU upgrades.

Either way, this is what my uninformed self picked out from browsing pcpartpicker and any criticism would be helpful. Is the 1050w overkill? Is that just for SLIing?

850W is more than enough. Do not buy Noctua air coolers if you want to maximize your budget.
This be Quiet cooler should be good enough. Thermalright Phantom Spirit has the better heatsink and cools Ryzen CPUs better, but be Quiet ships with better fans.
Chose the ARGB fan option because this version is cheaper than the normal version.
Here is a revised build. You could save a bit more on the motherboard, but $139 for a B650E TUF is a decent offer.
Swap the case to a 4000D Frame RS, Meshify C is so old.

If you don't know why you need a 12-core CPU, either drop to the 7600X for mainstream gaming or 7800X3D / 9800X3D if you want a better gaming CPU.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Jp4dDw

If you want a 1050W PSU to carry over in a future build, this one is the best value for money in the US.

Yeah, tell me about it. Apparently they also have to whitelist RAM in the bios in order for it to be usable and I lucked out when upgrading mine years ago so I didn't know this.
>9900x is not a gaming cpu, the 7800x3d or 9800x3d are
I swapped it for the
>AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 4.7 GHz 8-Core Processor
just for the sake of minor futureproofing when I get a 40 or 50 series down the line. Would you say it's worth going for this? Is the ram fine? I'm not a rich man and this is going to be a very big purchase for me so I want to make sure.

>>108740773
I had a PC I built thanks to people from here like 15ish years ago but the GPU burn itself out which also caused CPU issues so I grabbed a prebuilt and gutted the parts to slap into that. Lasted until Covid at which point I realized I would have needed a full restart which is why I went for the prebuilt I mentioned as the prices were absurd at the time. Now the ram prices are absurd but I'm needing something because at the point I am this thing's like five years old and already struggling in the current state it's in.
>>
>>108740789
you could maybe use Claude to hack the bios and enable support, but it's obviously hard to do, it is possible I've heard of people doing it, it would require modifying the bios with the AI help and flashing with a ch341a
>>
>>108740788
I upgraded the CPU to the 9800X3D just so I don't need to think about this for 5+ years and can justify that cost, same deal with your suggestion for the 1050w.

This is where I'm at now.

>>108740812
Nah, way out of my league and if I mess up I have to buy something anyway. I'd rather gut this thing's GPU and then make do with newer stuff I can piecemeal upgrade.

Boxed 7800X3D is decently discounted on Amazon atm (around $330, deal expires in about 7 hours).
9800X3D isn't worth the +$100 premium. I'd get the 9800X3D only if you like to tinker/OC.
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-ultra-7-270k-plus/19.html

You should also get a 6000MT/s memory kit, your CPU's memory controller might not be able to stably run 6400MT/s at the optimal setting.
Here is a revised list. It's worth paying about $10 more for the CL30 6000MT/s kit vs CL36.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WvF8Jw
If the memory kit's heatsink is too tall for that CPU cooler's fan, raise the fan clip slightly up. It won't cost you too much cooling performance.

If you prefer to stick with the 9800X3D, you will have to use the CPU-less BIOS Flashback update method to make the B650E TUF motherboard compatible with that CPU.
If you want a newer B850 board, Aorus Elite should be fine.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZR9NPf

If you want a DDR5 kit with a low-profile heatsink, this one's okay. But the heatsink is only applied on one side where the memory chips are.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vn4dDw

The mobo has what I need, the case has the internal 3.5s I wanted, the PSU is mostly futureproof for my use case, it has a good gaming CPU, and I can reuse my 3070 until the time comes where that's not good enough at 1080p.

Really really appreciate all of you. You helped me out 15ish years ago and are doing it again.

Different markets don't all work the same, nor does a given market have to work the same at all times. TVs and Monitors have been getting cheaper and cheaper in recent years, for example.
As for the RAM market - it's cyclical, and has been for many decades. Price go down, price go up, repeat. Last RAM crisis before this one started in 2017, and as always, prices got stupid for quite a while before dropping again.
One time in the 1990s, there was a RAM crisis so dire, people kept breaking into offices outside work-hours to steal RAM from computers, and even looting RAM delivery trucks. The current situation isn't as bad as that, and most likely won't be.

Is 4K REALLY noticeable compared to 1440p?

You can say PPD, PPI whatever but those only tell you how clear you can see the quality of the screen. I'm talking about the actual quality in pixels.

More pixels=More detail but is it REALLY worth it especially since its so costly.
>>
>>108744197
you typically combine 4k with a 32" monitor and that is obviously very noticeable
and while its 32" and taking more of your field of view than a 1440p 27" the ppi is high enough that you wont see individual pixels

its an obvious choice to get 32" 4k qd oled if you can afford a nice gpu to run it, like 5070 ti would have little issues
4k isnt that hard to run since dlss but its harder 1440p so poors should stick to lower res monitors
>>
>>108744197
for movies yes, definitely, even in a 1080p screen a 4k movie will look better, try it, torrent some quality movie in 4k and 1080p

I'm putting something together because I don't see prices coming down in the future.
Would I need to buy anything on top of this or would it be ready to put together when the parts arrive?

This is the only video you need on 4K gaming.

https://youtu.be/HylcIjr2uQw
FSR4 and DLSS has basically made gaming at 4K better than 1440p native with higher FPS than native 1440p and 4K is the new high end within the next year.

Then you have the settings which can always be tweaked to medium on 4K to get over 120fps in a lot of cases.

And then you have to consider that in the next year or two, AMD and Nvidia will be releasing new cards. AMD will release something between a 5080 and 5090.

So 4K will be even BETTER. A monitor is a huge deal you use it for years, but your gpu you can always sell it easily because its smaller and easier to ship.
>>
>>108744532
honestly I'm considering going back to 1080p just because TN is the only good panel tech we have and that's the only resolution they offer it at.

>>108741966
Because everything's still bookmarked for around a year or two. Don't expect anything to go low until late 2027 or early 2028 minimum unless something drastic happens like OpenAI declaring bankruptcy or Chinese ram actually being worth a damn.
>>
>>108744532
What's more important is fast pixel response. You only get that with OLED. You can have a 4k panel but it looks horrible if all those 4k pixels are updating at 5ms instead of 0.03ms.

Basically even with a budget card like a 5070, you're STILL better off going for 4K because with something like medium settings with DLSS quality or FSR4 quality you can get higher FPS and way more detail than even 1080p or 1440p native which will looks worse.
>>
>>108744612
>budget card like a 5070

That's more to do with UE5 AA being more heavy than DLSS while looking worse. Epic didn't care to optimize it because Nvidia paid them big since UE3.

what is so demanding about them? they don't even look good on normal screens with taa and other soft smearing. lumen looks like ass. the lighting outside and inside also looks like ass. artifacts are also present in most of those games at close and long distances so what exactly is demanding about them? they need so much performance just to get subpar results. looks like they are just badly made games that run like shit and look like shit so why are they the benchmark now? because they support ray tracing, path tracing and frame gen while still having those issues? can't even get a clean image without artifacts and vaseline like edges on most objects and characters.

Well all those UE5 games that are slop and poorly optimized are not going to hit good frames anyways even at native and 1080p is not an option.

So if its going to run at sub 45-50 fps native high settings on 1440p native you might as well just upgrade to 4K and use DLSS quality/performance and get 60-70fps with better detail.

Most games at least with a 9070XT or 5080 these days can hit 200fps+ like indies anyways or esports at 4K with the current hardware, and like I said if thats too little for some people they can get the new GPU's next year.

Lets be clear, It is not the fault of the hardware, this GPU can push good graphics at 200fps 4K. It's unoptimized games.

to get 60 PPD for 55" 4k you only need like 100cm distance and it will look good
you would need at minimum double desk distance else it's just too damn large or mounted behind a desk
at a normal desk distance? too high and you can't see the entire screen
125-150cm desk distance and it would be good considering the base would eat up 25cm

You can try this tweak and see if it helps: https://gaming.lenovo.com/general/post/a-quick-effective-and-simple-fix-for-the-partially-frozen-frames-in-t1wdggKMqHfKKIw

otherwise or your only real options are downgrade your Windows to a old version like 10 LTSC or switch to Linux.

The Sennheiser HD 599 SE is cheaper right now for me and was planning to grab that anyway, but I've not considered Phillips as a possible choice. I game, listen to music, and record shitty podcasts/gaming clips through a Scarlett Solo. What's your input on this?

>>108745030
Go to audioscience review dot com to get better informed opinions. Generally you probably want something with low total harmonic distortion and that somewhat decently follows the harman curve frequency response. Any deviation from that is about personal preference and individual head morphology. Most likely you are average.

Personally Im using a Tanchjim Space DAC with the latest firmware and sennheißer HD 560S. I also have cheap inaccurate screen speakers that still dont sound bad either. Also dont underestimate comfort of wearing obviously.
>>
>>108745883
>Sennheiser HD 599 SE
>What's your input on this?
basically the same thing as the SHP9600 (which are just SHP9500 with actual low end)
the SHP9600 have a wider sound stage
the SHP9600 have the 3.5mm input jack so they are compatible with the vmoda pro mic
the SHP9600 are also easier to drive (32-ohm vs 50-ohm)
the SHP9600 are also heavier than the Sennheiser HD 599 SE

>>
>>108745950
>Are the DACs really that important?
Sort of. Depends. For gaming headsets absolutely not necessary and if you're gonna stick to one of those then odds are you'll be fine without a DAC unless your mobo audio out is giving you humming or random EMI bullshittery you can hear.
If you buy monitors like the Sennheisers and Phillips headphones every anon is talking about, then yeah kind of. You could avoid the DAC but the preamps in them can make a difference, and if you're spending $200 on headphones with zero microphone input odds are you'll want a seperate microphone (++recommended).

Now all of a sudden you have a choice of USB everything or XLR/3.5(6.35)mm, and it honestly comes down to ease-of-use versus scalability, upgradability, and a much higher ceiling of audio quality.
But then think of the cost. My decent gaming headset the H6 Pros were $130 on sale, and my first full audio interface setup was about $500 all together. Make your choice.

audio is a rabbit hole. Just set yourself a limit so you don't fall for the audiophile snake oil. There is eventually a point where you just pay royal for convenience if not just "feeling" to have something better. I never bothered with an audio interface myself even though my micro has an XLR out as my headphones are connected to my DAC-Amp and I don't see reason to have yet another small box on the desk.

the thing with comparing headphones is that they are tuned differently. Even the pair of the same headphones can have minor differences. I bet if you'd equalize 500 and 1000 bucks headphones with measurements to have the same frequency response most people couldn't tell the difference. It's hard to mark an exact price but you can get a good audio setup for 300 to 1000 and anything beyond tends to be just a better out of the box experience at very best till you don't notice a difference anymore unless you have really good hearing. Buying second hand can save you a lot of money as well.

Arctic Silver 5 is outdated; MX-7 (X-application) or Duronaut (spreading) is better.
Your CPU's memory controller might not run 6400 MT/s at the optimal setting; it's safer to pick a 6000 MT/s one.
The replacement I included in the list is a poor overclocker, but it's not really worth spending an additional $100~200 for a DDR5 kit with Hynix memory chips.

I forgot to mention the 4000D Frame case's power button and front I/O ports are located on the bottom of the front panel.
If you intend to set the case on the floor or a stand, that might be a deal-breaker.

that CPU is a mindfuck because they're using Zen1 architecture but with double the L3 cache, with a locally designed ALU on N7 using Socket 1700 with 8c/8t, it has DDR5 support which is funny, and barely hits Zen+ single core performance and clock speeds despite the node advantage and Zen3 tier cache.

I would daily one if it wasn't as expensive as a 9800X3D and motherboard...

How retarded am I? Youtube starts flooding my feed with retired corp desktops.

>Buy a HP Elitedesk 800g4 sff desktop
>Have an ITX open air case that I bought cause it looked cool a long time ago. But didn't realize motherboard was a different style, not ATX. Dell seems proprietary, or at least wont bolt up to this.. I might cut the HP case up and bolt it up to my open air case.

My 10+ year old gaming PC kept dying so hoping this I7 with 32gb ram is enough for some PUBG and CSGO.

>Also have an old ginormous geforce 1060 6gb that wont fit in the original HP case. People have put smaller cards in there, but I'm not trying to spend more. Also uses an 8pin power in, so I buy an HP 500w PSU that has an 8 pin. PSU's may also be proprietary, or need an adapter on a regular PSU.

I probably should've saved up and just bought something decent, but it kinda just snowballed.

A friend asked me what his upgrade path should look like..... and I really don't know what to tell him?
These are his most important parts (also not in the pic but he's got 32gb ddr5), more than good enough for his 1440p but he keeps talking about new cpu and possibly more.
For how many years this should be good enough of a rig?
>>
>>108750180
ask him what he hopes to do with the PC that he cant do right now.
tell him to hold because Zen 6 isn't out yet (late this year/early next year), he doesn't need more ram especially not right now, the 7800XT is more than capable as it is between a 9060XT and a 9070 so really doesn't need to upgrade yet and can wait for RDNA 5 and the 60 series.

right now is a good time to upgrade your case, cooling and psu as its the only thing you can buy and it will scratch that upgrade itch.

I have a top of the line system I built in 2019ish.
>Intel i9-10980XE, undervolted for 4.4GHz all core clocks
>Cooled by an Arctic 420mm AiO
>Asus Rampage Giga gamer ultra mega super edition something or another I can't remember the full name of but it was a near $700 board
>128GB DDR4 3200MHz (4x32GB for quad channel)
>2x 2TB Samsung NVME SSDs
>RTX 2080Ti (EVGA FTW3 Ultra)

It's blatantly clear my GPU is old. 3 generations, nearing 4 if RTX 6000 series is coming out soon. That said, can I just slam an RTX 5080 into my build? Would PCIe 3.0 hold back the card a bunch? I'm playing on 1440p. Also now that EVGA is out of the picture, what brand am I buying? Was looking at that ugly as fuck Asus Noctua RTX 5080 crossover abortion. It's ugly as sin, expensive, but from reviews it's extremely quiet, clocked very high, and comes with an overkill cooler (with fans that last forever). I intend to downvolt this card like the rest of my hardware for longevity.

>Would PCIe 3.0 hold back the card a bunch?
Negligible, within margin of error difference. That being said modern games are being more cpu bottlenecked than ever before. Especially with denuvo and 20 other drms put on top of each other that eat up like 20% of cpu usage. I would recommend just getting a new cpu since that one is kinda dogshit. Any modern x3d cpu will outperform it by like ~50% (in gaming of course)
>>
>>108751818
you can but probably don't want to and not because of gen3 but because the 10980xe's cores are individually, very slow. this will cause crazy amounts of cpu bottlenecking and not let you use your gpu to 100% utilization in many modern games

well damn that's disappointing to hear. I was hoping I would get another generation or 2 out of this CPU. Guess it's time I retire it then. I would say I'd use it as like a server or NAS or something, but it's so power hungry, it's not worth it.

Can I take anything over from this build? The PSU is a Corsair AX1600i. The 2x NVME SSDs are Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB models. The PC also has 4x 10TB WD Reds. I assume HDD's haven't changed much beyond gaining more capacity so I'll move those over, but am I missing anything by not getting a new PSU? Doesn't matter much, especially not if you're undervolting. I say just buy whatever is cheapest unless you want a specific card for aesthetics or something.
You could be running into processor bottlenecks depending on how and what you're playing.

I'm assuming pic related is just a later released, better binned CPU? Is the 9850X3D worth the $35 premium? I honestly don't really care about top clock, I care more about how well the CPU responds to undervolting. Getting 400Mhz more at the same TDP envelope does seem nice though.

>Get the gpu first and then decide if you need to move to a new platform.
solid idea
>I say just buy whatever is cheapest unless you want a specific card for aesthetics or something.
I was looking at the Noctua/Asus RTX 5080 crossover. It's near $350 more than really any other 5080 model, but it's one of the fastest clocked GPUs on the market, the quietest, and the cooler is overall overkill. I fully intend to under volt it.
>>
>>108751968
Takes the hard drives over. You'll want to get a new motherboard and ram to go along with the new cpu and a new atx3.1 psu with a native 12v-2x6 connector for the rtx5080 gpu to have good current balancing and lower risk of melting.
>Will I noticed real world changes going from PCIe 3.0 NVME SSDs to PCIe 5.0?
no
>>
>>108752015
actually now that I'm looking up reviews and what not, the CPU is shit at games in 2026 and its multi-core capabilities is being beaten by new CPUs with half its cores/threads and 1/3 the power usage. I think It's time I put this build out to pasture.

I assume that's bone stock out of box. I heavily prioritize noise levels and since these new CPUs are way less power hungry than my 10980XE, I was hoping to go to air cooling because my water pump in my AiO developed this whine/grind over time and it drives me nuts. The Noctua NH-D15 G2 (fucking $170) seems to be the NH-D15 on steroids from reviews. It should be more than enough for an 8c16t CPU at "120w tdp" right? I know tdp isn't end all be all ofc. Maybe it's worth getting the 9800X3D solely for just less power usage at bone stock and I don't have to mess with undervolting anything?
>If you can hold onto it for a little bit longer intel's new socket is still supposed to be late this year or early 2027 I believe
gone are the days of blindly buying Intel I think although I'm hopeful they release something competitive. I can always sell my system if that's the case and grab intel's latest and greatest if it's worth a damn. As is I'm wanting to play games and this build is barely cutting it at times. The 2080Ti being EoL as far as driver support and the CPU being mediocre at best is making gaming a miserable experience atm. if it's not overall low fps, it's a stutter fest.
>>108752194
I'm showing my age but I remember scraping money together shoveling snow for old people, raking leaves, and doing other odd job shit people would pay a kid to do to get enough money to build an Intel i5-2500k and GTX 560 Ti 1GB system. A truly solid mid range PC used to be like $700. The i5 had wild headroom too. Used to be able to get like a 30% real world uplift in performance from a moderate voltage bump using a $20 Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo single tower 120mm cooler. How far we've fallen.

I enjoy that modern hardware comes at nearly 99.9% of it's capability out of the box, but man do I miss how things used to be.
