I work at microsoft. I recently had a bug with Xbox on PC refusing to download a game, but I found a reddit thread where someone had a workaround that would make it work, and people asked why has that thread been up for 3 years but microsoft hasn't fixed it yet. Well, in this specific case, it could be the fault of the xbox app, the windows network driver, the xbox azure subscription configuration, the xbox vm driver (the vm is probably linux), the azure host networking driver, the azure host networking hardware, the storage backend networking, the storage backend hardware, the load balancers, the edge routers. That's probably 20-25 teams at minimum, and I work for one of them. The problem won't get fixed because I don't know whose fault it is and I don't have time to spend months having meetings with every team to figure out who's at fault. How is a big company supposed to not implode

I swear I hate those arrogant fuckers so much. I don't consider myself particulary mature but how detached from reality can you be to act like a shitty brat when the only thing waiting for you is a job at McDonalds when your parents finally had enough of you in your 40s?

I have an idea for a financial app focused on helping you save money. Every transaction you make will be rounded up to the nearest dollar, with the extra amount placed in a savings account. Then at the end of the month you get to keep 20% of that savings account, and the rest will be donated to poor Jewish school children's parents

cousin of mine lost his job as a software developer after 20 years. other people I know in the same field are also losing their job. some of them used to work in large corporation and they say its fucking bleak. dont want to delve into the whole its ai/overhiring during scamdemic but it does look like a paradigm shift. maybe its time to learn a trade (unironically).

It's not a bad job and the experience is good but I NEED THO THAT MONEY I NEED THAT MONEY I REALLY REALLY DO I NEED THAT MONEY. I have the A+/Net+. Going for RHCSA and CCNA (finding studying this stuff interesting and "fun" so that's good). Certs and experience seem to be my path forward to a respectable income if that's even possible. Also am working on connections, have good relations with the higher up people we assist.

Any advice?

I opened this thread solely to bitch about the fact that I need to install the Word application if I want to insert a cover page rather than just doing it through the online web interface. I've put that off, but now I'm struggling to figure out how to change the font of my ToCs. I vehemently hate Teams so much. It takes fucking forever to move between folders and documents. By contrast, I downloaded LibreOffice out of frustration. Took no time to install and everything just WORKS. What happened to Microsoft? It really can't be the gross incompetence and mismanagement by Indians, is it?

Why do people in the same team will try to sabotage a teammate's work or undermine it/them? What do people gain from doing this when they're in the same team? Legit question, explain.

I'm a junior, I've been helping others, supported them, my boss has been praising my work and my attitude, yet some of my coworkers who have been in the company for much longer than me hates my guts. I haven't done a single thing to them. I don't get it.
>>
>>108746341
maybe you are more time-efficient than them and they want you to take thing easy.
you know, tech is (mostly) a scam, where you tell your employer that things are difficult and take time, while in reality you are taking a lot of money from them while wasting time.

>some of my coworkers who have been in the company for much longer than me hates my guts
this isn't sabotage though. go read the definition of "sabotage" and come back to tell us where the sabotage is.
>>
>>108746360
Are most jobs really like this? My boss is on my ass daily if I don't push enough commits or close enough tickets. He uses claude code for everything now and I'm expected to deliver work at the same rate as AI now. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be fired after my next performance review because I can't keep up with this shit.

this job is fucking tedious, and if you "work hard", you burn out in no time. also, the whole field is ageist, so you either take advantage of your position ASAP, or you get fucked in the ass and die in poverty and misery.
>>
>>108746563

He doesn't even try to know or care about exactly what I'm working on, he just expects me to be able to pump out code at the same rate he does with claude code.

As bad as this sounds, Microsoft is likely still very far from collapse simply because of all the enterprise licenses keeping it alive. IBM has been putting out absolute sludge shit garbage software for at least 20 years now and yet is still solvent because of all the businesses it's holding hostage with enterprise licenses, and Microsoft is now using that model so you can only realistically talk about Microsoft imploding once IBM implodes since M$ is copying their homework.

I'm going to be honest, ever since GPT got sort of good a year ago, I have been using it as well as some LLMs for all my coding needs. I have not had to independently code anything for about 8 months. I have nearly completely lost all knowledge of coding. I genuinely struggle to write a simple "hello world" that works in Python. I feel like I am at square 1. That being said, I don't want to get my mojo back because I can comfortably cruise in my current position given my YOE. I wish I could use the company intranet for personal needs, but I just hotspot my 4G and play shitty games on my personal shitty laptop and browse the web.

It feels like I have hit USSR levels of stagnation. I have no intention of trying my best anymore at work; I don't even make an attempt to pretend that I care about the stakeholders anymore. My one goal at work is to stay hidden and goof off discreetly before I can finally go home. By the way, when I did my CS degree many years ago, I graduated with a high distinction. My past self would either be proud at me for being a fat lazy pig or extremely disappointed.

Seriously, it's a bad market for seniors like me and I can't even imagine how bad it is for new graduates. Yet, my sister team at Microsoft, a few months ago, hired FOUR h1bs masters students--3 Indians and 1 Chinese. They either had 1 or 2 years of experience in India or were straight foreign Bachelors to US Masters transfers. How is Microsoft able to justify hiring h1bs for new grad positions for standard CRUD work on a SaaS when the job market for Americans is so bad? Either the job market is not so bad or the Indian management in our product is discriminating--the latter is most likely since 90% of our org is from a particular country.

You're all fucked and will be unemployable by 40. It's not 1995 and your ods of making enough money after tax in tech in the short duration you will have access to high pay will leave you burnt out, bitter and consign you to poverty in the second half of your life. Find something else to do. Only 1 in 100 of you will even make a high pay grade for five years and if you are that 1 you will be viewed as expendible with time limited skills and milked and discarded.

Get out while you can. Not just that but the reality is tech workers whether devs, testers, admins or support etc are HATED by all other staff and society and every single normie wishes you unempoyment and pain.

#IT could have developed like law or accounting into a stable profession, it did not it developed into sewerage work with no union, no employment rights and no dignity.

who cares, they will all be laid off in the next five years anyway garbage in, garbage out

https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/MSFT/earnings/MSFT-Q3-2026-earnings_call-547930.html

" Total company headcount declined year-over-year as we focus on building high-performing teams that operate with pace and agility."

"Our Q4 outlook for COGS and operating expenses includes roughly $900 million in one-time costs for the recently announced voluntary retirement program."

" First, we continue to evolve how we operate to increase our pace and agility, and therefore, we expect head count will decrease year-over-year"

To answer your question aside from Indian hiring discimination in favour of unqualified or poor quality Indian candidaes as a now recognised norm for Indians effecting hiring in the US and other nations they have a foothold in, it is very cheap and easy to fire HB1s

It's just, goodbye you are no longer needed and by the way get out of the country along with anyone you came with. As MSFT expects to be reducing headcount constantly, HB1s make sense in any short term stopgapping.

I went to grad school after working for a bit, so I actually had money and didn't have to schlep like everyone else, but I found out about some group chat a lot of people were in to tell each other about free food, such as some event with left over pizza or whatever. I ended up going to one of the events, not through the group chat but because I was a legitimate member of whatever the thing was, and some Indian in line for the stuff starting asking me about how I found out about the event and if I was part of any other free food group chats because he got kicked out of all of them. wtf are you doing where you get kicked out of free food group chats

Simply don't care. Simply hold a trump card in your pocket that if things go to total shit, you can always kill yourself. Nothing matters. Just say random shit. Just do your job as well as you can. If you end up homeless just kill a bunch of techbros and then yourself. It's that easy.
>>
>>108752145
Anon this is entirely made up in your brain. Your work environment isn't burning you out - you are burning out yourself because you stress about retarded shit you have 0 control or influence over. >>108752202
I mean is it not? Come 10-15 years ago, none of this shit would be even raised. Business teams would do business stuff. Technology team would do tech stuff. Shit used to be shut down if it was retarded or infeasible from the start but now it's "oh just give an attempt at it anyways". Good lord trying to get an actual development team in here since that'll risk everyone's job since we keep relying on third party fucking junk.
Internal teams are filled with outsourced jeets, external teams are filled with grifters and outsourced jeets. I'm fucking losing my god damn mind.

Class after Python 201?

I’ve completed Python 201 on TCM academy, prior to this have completed an IT degree which included a rigorous class on Python, familiar with OOP, some sql and mongo. Is there any class next in progression online like on coursera?

Alot of those are scams. CS50 from harvard isn't bad if you really miss some of the intro level topics. You need to download PDF's and filter against indian names on the text to get some topics down. Beyond that classes are useless without some bigger project to build towards. Try deploying a web server with a website within a Bare metal Hypervisor 1 setup. It'll teach you the barebones basics of how those things work and you can test it with a PC on the system to see if it passes data. GNS3/Proxmox ect.

I feel so stuck professionally. I've been working in Helldesk for about 7 years at this point, ping-ponging up and down the ladder and from company to company. At one point I was able to jump up to Product Manager but the company I was at went through some pretty severe layoffs and I left due to an ultimatum to move to a HCOL area. Around that time is when all the tech companies started doing mass layoffs and I started having to compete with people with years of experience. While my current job is a fairly light load, I feel like I've grown less patient as I've gotten older and jumping up to SysAdmin isn't going to be something I can tolerate. I don't really know what else I could do. I feel like I should leave tech but then I'd need to start all over because what skills even transfer?
>>
>>108753686
I feel like there's nothing else in tech you could pivot to. All the previous roles like devops you could've pivoted to are now expected to be done by regular devs.
>>
>>108753717
That's more or less the impression I've had. I'm stuck in a dead-end job if I don't want to be a SysAdmin. Even though my job pisses me off at times, I don't really want to let it go because of how bad the market is. I go through these crisis where I feel like I'm falling behind in life but I also feel I should be grateful I at least have a job.

For any future employer's information my contract employment should be counted alongside my future appointment. It was almost continuous since they needed me but struggled to hire me since it was the during middle of layoffs.

>>108754951
My position is a weird case where I'm the one programmer working for a team of engineers. They only hire computer scientists as students but when I came in I fixed so much for them that they made an exception for me. My designation is physical science, which is close enough I guess since I'm physically interacting my keyboard with my fingers to conduct science. I recall people on this board saying that doing an computer-related engineering degree isn't a silver bullet but it absolutely would be in my scenario as they would have to pay me the amount you're talking about. Also since I'm the only dedicated technical person I do the job of like 4 other people doing mostly programming but also devops, data automation, 3d modelling, etc.

Hate to break this to you champ but people don't consider a contract job as full time work while you're in undergrad. Most people will count it as 0, same as an internship
100k CAD is also small potatoes. That's 70k real money

>(Contract) is resume poison, as soon as you have real jobs scrub it ASAP
Haven't heard this in Canada and after reading some Reddit it seems that you're more of a bum in the U.S. if you do contract work since in some states you can be dropped at any time and you also get no medical coverage. Healthcare is public here but not eyewear or dental so you don't get those if you do contract. Contracts are supposedly lucrative here and I'm assuming that's because of a competence shortage where two thirds of people have a college degree here and too much white collar nothingness goes on. I might be making peanuts but what I do benefit as a full-time public servant now in Canada is $500 dollars of free massages, kek

I'm really having it hard . I can’t send as many job applications as I would like due to my location . Most jobs aren't hiring from Africa . The local market here is also in the pits way worse than the global market. No opportunities here . The few opportunities I get that accept EMEA end up ghosting no replies . Others are straight up scams. I’m averaging a total of 4 applications in a month . I know I need to send more applications to increase my chances but theres literally no job vacancies that I can send my resume to .

Then I log into this sub and I see posts saying the Western countries are outsourcing jobs to third world markets since we are cheaper . And I’m left wondering where are these jobs though ? Outsourcing to us but I can’t find a single place that accepts applications from third world countries.

our parents have worked at the same company for 20 years and haven't sent out a single job application in decades. they make 3x our salary cruising by working maybe 4-6 hours a day before coming home to (one) of their multiple properties.
even if they did somehow get laid off, they'll get rehired within a month because everyone is looking for a senior boomer with 25 yoe in a niche field

is going from dev to PM a bad idea?
generally I like senior engineer role but I need more money, with car payments, mortgage, kids, etc. also my wife doesn't work. It's really comfy nowadays because I wake up whatever hour I want, have a few meetings between 10AM to 1PM, and generally have a pretty flexible schedule in which I work at whatever hours I feel more productive, but I've read PMs have much more work pressure and are supposed to be always available during regular office hours (ie 9 to 5)

Is it normal to have zero desire to study/develop skills outside of work? It should be seen as normal, but unfortunately it isn't. Work should simply be means to acquire money to support yourself and your family. Nowadays I have a feeling employers want us to be on an endless treadmill of self-improvement and grind. I fucked up recently because I said to my boss I prefer to relax on the weekend and that I don't like studing after going back home from work. That was a mistake which could cost me my job.
