yes ddr5, i have a 7700x with some 4800 speed ram. It was a constant problem a couple years ago when i first built it. eventually I updated my bios and turned off expo stopping it from running at the overclocked 6000 and it fixed it. So it could have been either the bios update, the expo disable, or both. But it was fixed after that. I didn't bother trying to put expo back on after my system was perfectly stable. Was just happy to have everything finally not restarting like that and didn't want to risk dealing with that headache again.

its always intensely annoyed me that the online techxperts literally never give decent advice around getting stable ram, its like they either pretend they never have trouble, or they always get sent top1% super-chad ram that can handle any setting they throw at it, so they just set and forget without any trouble.

AMD ram has always been sensitive and unstable in my exp, you get a middle of the road set, put it at a stock setting on XMP, and never ever touch it once it works in my exp, its just too much tinkering and trouble otherwise. DDR4 was worse though in the early days imo.

I'm looking to take advantage of Microcenter's 4 in 1 bundle deal. Pic related. Please ignore the power warnings in my build list. I have 2x 9070 XT GPUs on the list. My question was is it worth the extra $50 for a larger model (XFX) vs the more standard Powercolor Reaper model? They're both 3 fan models, the XFX simply seems larger with PCB size and overall heatsink size but does that even matter if I fully intend to undervolt?

Any advice on this build:

just backups. It's not cheap to do such a thing. Depending on your project size, you would want say a 1TB SSD for work space. That would be saved to a 4-8TB mechanical drive. That mechanical drive would then be backed up to a second mechanical drive inside the same PC. (RAID 1/Mirror/scheduled windows backups). You'd then have a 2nd backup in a similarly sized mechanical drive in an external somewhere. An external with an actual switch on it to turn it on and off. This prevents any would be virus from spreading from your main PC (hot) to your offline storage (cold).

Depends on if you need to share your projects across multiple machines or users. If not, then no NAS is needed. How much storage you get it entirely up to you. I have a server with near 64TB in it because I have a massive physical media collection. Back when I was buying HDD's, the "sweet spot" for TB:$ ratio was 8TB to 10TB. AI bullshit has face fucked the market into a coma, so get whatever your budget allows. You're looking for drives like

Cheaper, higher capacity, less life span, arguarably less reliable. You can often google the exact model number and HDD and ask if it's SMR/CMR and it tells you straight up. Lastly as far as you performance, you look fine. Make sure whatever video editor software you use is set to take advantage of h.265 Nvidia NVENC for render speed

Thoughts on this build for vidya and compiling and testing software? My current PC is a shitty prebuilt HP Omen 30L that's known for having issues and somehow it's lasted me 6 years. If it breaks one of these days I'll blow the money on this excessive new one. I have a 4TB WD blue I bought last year so I'll skip the SSD until later. Someone told me here the blue is fine although it doesn't have DRAM, my filesystem is ext4 so it's probably alright. I use linux so I can enjoy the open source AMD video drivers that aren't proprietary and vibe slopped. The build is $5000 because it's leaf monopoly money.

Part of my frustration with my current PC is it has such bad and loud cooling the thermal paste on my GPU melted which I replaced some months ago. Both of them are likely overkill for most things its going to be doing not being graphically intense, but I am curious about running some local AI model (of all types - LLM/, Agent, graphical image, voice/music etc) though I've not really done anything with AI so far.

Is the 3090's 24GB of VRAM really a massive improvement over the 16GB? I know that for the 9070XT will be comfortable in Linux given AMD's FOSS driver compatibility, an the 9000 series has pretty solid ML/AI hardware so as long as stuff is configured to not just use CUDA, I read that should be fine. For raster or most other workloads with raw power it appears the 9070XT should be equal or better, but for some AI stuff between the NV CUDA and 24GB VRAM some seem to feel its better. The resale prices for 3090 are going through the roof now, but I have to wonder why - is it for home use AI or something else? I can't imagine that all these people are buying $1250 3090s for local hosted FOSS AI stuf

You're in that sweet spot of dumb where you can't realize that buying old hardware is a bad idea, but are able to read the spec sheet. You'll be disappointed either way you go.

Wasnt the temperature distribution of X3D weird anyway cause of the tackled on L3 cache? On my 9800x3d the core temps could sit at 35 while the package went all the way up 50 in idle depending on the situation.

If your software is showing the hotspot, then IO die will often be the hotspot at idle.
The best way to lower idle power draw and temps on Zen chips is to lower SoC voltage.
Many motherboards pump too much voltage because memory controller is on IO die and they want to keep RAM stable.
It's a silicon lottery, by default it's 1.3V with EXPO/XMP enabled but with some luck you can use 1.0V for VSoC.
