How would I go about disabling an Intel CPU's overclocking or putting a cap on it? Win11, i7-14700k, 5070Ti.I've been experiencing crashes and bluescreens across various games more often than I'd like, and when looking up the various error codes consistently find mentions of it being related to unstable CPU overclocks. I haven't done any manual overclocking, but from what I've heard the clock or voltage is automatically adjusted in response to load, which would make sense as the cause when most of these crashes have been upon starting some CPU-intensive task. How hard would it be to either put a cap on its ability to do that, or set it at a fixed speed to stop it entirely, and how could I do so with minimal performance compromise? For reference the specific BSOD codes were>DRIVER_OVERRAN_STACK_BUFFER>IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL>KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLEDHave already done DISM/sfc and a full driver reinstall with DDU, but want to be sure I know what I'm doing before I start fucking around in the bios.
Just learned X870 Aorus Stealth is the best mobo only getting beaten by overbuilt mobos at $600 range and second best being either X870 Tomahawk or B850 Tomahawk depending on budget skimps
>>109254459Just copy paste your question into Gemini. You'll get a step by step answer on how to fix it.
>>109254459sorry anon, that model of cpu is known to rapidly degrade under older intel microcodesthe best you can do is flash a newer bios with the new microcodes and hope for the besti'd recommend flashing the bios with bios flashback so it bypasses the unstable cpu which may corrupt the bios flashif it's still unstable afterwards, start an RMA with intel to exchange it for a new cpu
I have never spent more than $200 on a mobo
>>109254478The Aorus Stealth is really good but pricey but worth the money. Like an X870 board dabs on X870E ROG Hero ($600) at $350
>>109254469When you say "degrade", do you mean full-on hardware degradation? That makes sense though, my bios is significantly out of date (7/2023) now that I check it, and the release notes on MSI's site make mention of microcode updates several times. I'll go ahead and flash the bios. It's only had stability problems under heavy load, so it should be fine, but I'll err on the side of caution.
>>109254486yes, hardware degradation. as in your cpu stops being stable at the voltages intel tested your cpu at in the factory
>>109254306Gigabyte B850 GAMING X WIFI6E is a passable motherboard, nothing special. The board will handle the 9800X3D just fine (update the BIOS to the latest stable version).Get the board for the memory bundle.
>>109254486It might be too late to protect that chip, it's already damaged if you're experiencing crashes and instabilities.I'd start an RMA to get a replacement. Here's the official statements.https://community.intel.com/t5/Mobile-and-Desktop-Processors/Intel-Core-13th-and-14th-Gen-Desktop-Instability-Root-Cause/m-p/1633442https://community.intel.com/t5/Mobile-and-Desktop-Processors/Intel-Core-13th-and-14th-Gen-Vmin-Shift-Instabilty-Update-New/m-p/1686948These 13/14th gen i7 and i9 CPUs need manual tuning (setting a strict maximum Vcore VR limit, undervolting, power limiting, and maybe even a -100 MHz downclock).
Why the fuck did Logitech stop making the g600It's the only mouse I've ever found in the middle of the venn diagram of features I now need (side buttons, easily switchable DPI, mouse wheel nudge)I literally bought a Japanese Logicool g600 as a backup and after mentioning it to a buddy in Japan he bought and shipped me another one. Why do they still make them new over there? Why does every company that makes a good product I like just fucking discontinue the product (no modern HAF XB EVO case for instance)
If anyone here owns a 990 Pro SSD, you should run some reasonable (realistic) stress test to confirm the drive isn't from a defective batch. My 2 TB 990 Pro didn't even have 200 GB written and its controller suddenly failed (long PC boot time because SSD controller wouldn't complete system handshake, drive not recognized in BIOS & OS).I bought the drive directly from Samsung US, and the RMA process was very smooth (filed on Monday, received replacement today). They sent me a brand new 2 TB 9100 Pro.My 990 Pro was manufactured in 2023 Feb 19.They test the drive before sending a replacement unit. Don't do anything stupid that might void the warranty.
>>109254492>>109254530Gotcha. The bios update went off without an issue, so I'll hope that alone is enough to fix it. If I keep running into issues I'll get on an RMA. Looks like Intel has a thing where you can put a deposit down for your replacement that they refund when the old one gets to them so that solves my main worry with it. Thanks lads, should've asked here sooner.
>>109253990If they can't already play their games with an older mid build (all games worth playing can be played by a PC no more powerful than a PS5) that's their own fault
>>109254577You should go to Advanced CPU setting in the BIOS' OC menu to set a Vcore VR limit (1.35V or 1.30).This guy explains the shitshow a bit using an MSI BIOS, you don't have to watch the whole thing.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmU3COA-32EIf you can't be bothered to go through the RMA, the voltage limit + negative boost offset should keep the CPU running stably for a while. You won't lose too much performance with a -100 or -200 MHz downclock. You should get a replacement before the warranty lapses.

This is my very first time using an AIO CPU cooler. What should I expect and what are the warning signs that I need to get a new one?
>>109254708>What should I expectBetter than air cooling. You might want to learn how to set custom fan curves to minimize operating noise..Setting a static pump speed is nice for the AIO's longevity (around 50~70% RPM is enough for most people).Arctic has a nice fan curve adjustment guide, the concept can be applied to other AIOs.https://support.arctic.de/en/pwm-settings>what are the warning signs that I need to get a new one?Get HWInfo and check the CPU temperature from time to time.https://www.hwinfo.com/If you notice significantly higher CPU temps in idle & load, there is something wrong with the AIO (dead pump, insufficient coolant)

>>109256968Basically what you do is you write off more then you spend. So I'll write of the cost of the PC parts, time worked on the PC to build it (give myself like 20$/hr), and costs like shipping, fuel costs to pick up parts, etc. Basically all the stuff like buying boxes, jawa/ebay seller fees, can be written off.So if I sell the PC for $2500, but it "cost" me $2700 to make it, then I get $200 off of my taxes.

How much will I be kneecapping myself by getting 16GB DDR5 along with a 9600X+9070XT? I haven't built a desktop PC in ages and 32GB pushes it over the limit of being a reasonable proposition for me, I'm pretty liquid atm but I just don't want to spend that much. The alternative is just sticking with my laptop for another 2-3 years or however long it takes for prices to normalize. >why not get DDR4?In my particular shithole country, any savings I could get by going with DDR4 would be completely offset by the premium of getting an AM4 CPU good enough that it wouldn't completely bottleneck the GPU.
