I'm trying to switch to linux from windows. Really I'm trying.
I'm currently dual booting and using cachyos.

Why the fuck can't I change the order of system tray icons on KDE plasma? It's it too much to ask to have the audio icon on the far right?

Also problems with audio when it starts up from quiet. Like small sounds are all choppy.

Also audacity display issues. Maybe something to do with wayland?

Aside from that it's pretty fast and cool.

I haven't used Xfce in a long time, but from what I remember each panel icon is a separate widget there instead of it having a unified system tray.
You could technically achieve the same on KDE Plasma if you make a separate widget for everything you want in your panel, since the tray icons cannot be re-arranged.
>>
>>109366511
That's probably what I was thinking of. I agree with the original Anon now, it is kind of stupid that, that is case now that I think about it.

Are you on Fedora? I had this issue and couldn't uninstall because it was marked as a dependency. When I looked into it the bug of the settings menu not respecting you disabling the virtual keyboard altogether has reports going back to Fedora 41. Some people assumed that when they swapped to Plasma-keyboard from the old virtual keyboard that it would solve it but it's something more fundamentally broken under the hood and may not be distro specific, and could possibly only be affecting specific hardware which is why it has existed for so long without more people complaining about it.

>Are you on Fedora?

So it seems. I saw that there was a merged bug fix related to this issue 2 weeks ago. Not sure if that will actually fix our issue but should presumably come with the next frameworks update.
>which is why it has existed for so long without more people complaining
I don't remember when they added the new virtual keyboard, but it started becoming problematic for me with the update that added the hold down a key "feature".

It came with a bug that changed how highlighting text and then pressing brackets/parenthesis in Kwrite worked, normally it would just add it around the text but the bug caused it to replace the text instead. This was later fixed though.

The addition of the holding down a key feature was super annoying and I don't think you can disable it so I disabled the entire virtual keyboard to get rid of it. Prior to this it was enabled and I never had any reason to disable it.

>>
>>109367863
>PCs used for playing games will quite likely use steam these days.
Believe it or not, most people who play games on their PC don't even use Steam.

>>109367865
The claim was "CachyOS is the most popular distro", which is incorrect. It's the 2nd most popular distro on Steam, but it's not the most popular distro in general. Going off Steam you'd think nVidia is the most popular GPU vendor as 80% of Steam users are using an nVidia GPU. But this is totally incorrect by every single non-Steam metric. Generally speaking nVidia only makes up 15%-18% of the GPU market, similar to AMD. Intel is what more than 50% of people use.

Besides, popularity does not equal quality. Manjaro and Ubuntu were the 2 most popular distros in Steam surveys not that long ago and I would never call Manjaro a good distro at all. It's an unstable shitshow and the project has basically collapsed with half the team walking out recently.
>>

>>
>>109367940
steamdeck is skewing the results, without it cachy would be most popular. Do you count steam decks as a pc? I don't
Also, not sure what your point is about the GPU market. When people talk about that, they obviously talk about discrete GPUs, not integrated ones. Intel discrete GPUs do not have 50% of the market.

Can vouch for Linux Mint. I've installed it on my old relatives' computers and they have no problems with it (One of them in their 70s), and they only knew windows previously. Any of the versions are fine but I try to use Linux Mint Cinnamon first if the laptop/pc can handle it. The other ones are more lightweight if you have a really old/slow system. I haven't tried the debian edition yet but the other ones are ubuntu derivatives and come with some extra QoL features out of the box from what I understand, so I just use those. All the other Linux Mint versions (besides the debian edition) are basically the same, just with a different desktop environment. Linux Mint Cinnamon is like their main flagship version.

I also use Linux Mint Cinnamon for gaming, so as long as you aren't using the latest cutting edge hardware and need the absolute bleeding edge specific drivers, you'll be fine.

I went with Nobara, a fedora gaming fork. Note that you will have problems if you use nvidia, all AMD systems have less problems. The biggest problem with this meme distro is the tendency of the maintainers to keep reinventing the box in regards to system updates. You thought system updates were bad on windows, well it's worse here. If you're wondering why I'm still using it, it's because it just clicked for me and I built an all AMD system at the time.

Guys I need support.

So in some distros I'm getting this weird glitch on startup (see picrel).
I direct your attention to that horizontal line. That's the glitch.
It happens during startup before the log in screen, and it only lasts a second or two. Overall it's pretty harmless, but it bothers me so much.

The weird thing is, it happens in some distros, it doesn't in some.

OS / Distro where it occurs
>all fedora spins
>cachyOS
>Kubuntu

It doesn't happen in
>Win 10/11
>ubuntu
>mint

I've had the best experience with CachyOS and Fedora and I want to keep using them, but it's presence is triggering me so much.

Any ideas what could cause this? Why and how it happens in some, but not in others?
Quick googling says it might be Wayland. Is that the common factor? What do you think?

Rest of the drive for generic use, mount somewhere under /mnt such as /mnt/whatever. Then host your $HOME at /mnt/whatever/anon.
(some anons do a /home partition but IMO that's not a very good idea because there's other use cases for the big partition such as VM images or crypto ledgers or just carrying Bluetooth pairings when distrohopping)

If you use btrfs, usually you want to keep it all in one partition and take advantage of subvols instead. They probably mean COW makes btrfs/zfs/xfs slower than ext4, but thats more of an issue with vms and torrents not games i think.
>>
>>109375677
Games do a lot of blockwise file changes for updates. It's usually not as extreme as torrents or VM images, but it's still enough to be a noticeable problem given you're sitting there locked in waiting for the HDD to do its thing. Also if btrfs decides to compress something and it starts getting changed, hoo boy.

xfs doesn't engage CoW unless an extent is actually reflinked. Being able to do zero cost cp -a backups is actually pretty great for game patches, and xfs_fsr actually works unlike btrfs defrag. It also has several GB less format overhead than btrfs.

One big thing ext4 has going for it is native case folding covers recurring wine case folding bugs.

If you want a Windows 11 experience in a good way, you use LTSC 2024 and/or WinUtil. Cinnamon is more Windows 7 than it is Windows 11.
Also the whole "the perfect distro for Windows newcomers is the one that ships with this DE" mentality needs to fucking die. Mint is a good choice not only because it ships with Cinnamon and has a sane installer, but also because of what it's based on, how it's maintained, how well it works with various hardware configurations, and how good the GUI sandbox is constructed. In the same vein you could recommend Arch since you can use archinstall and choose Cinnamon, but then you'll have Arch, and Arch is a dogshit distro maintained by complete retards. Similarly Fedora would be a great choice since you have a Cinnamon spin and an official KDE spin, and it's Fedora which is as close to "just werks" of Windows as you can get in the Linux ecosystem.

Also Bazzite is a dogshit distro made by faggots that want to get attention from all the SteamOS-like clones that started showing up. They'll ban you from their Discord if you don't do nothing but praise their dogshit distro, they refuse to do the work to make it "just werk" on Nvidia hardware, even though that's what they advertise as, and when that tool DankPods used Bazzite designed to "just werk" on 10 series GPU's, only for it to default to software rendering, then everyone was telling him he was the retard for expecting a distro meant to "just werk" do what it says, that should tell you everything you need to do about the seriousness of that toy project.

What is the best way do to data encryption on linux? i don't want whole hdd or patition encryption, just a simple encrypted folder or container, luks sparse file can shit the bed if you run out of physical disc space of id the header gets corrupted, cryfs looks good but it also pretty fragile to running out of space or index file corruptions, others like gocryptfs are complete trash because doesn't encrypt the dir structue and file metadata, so i'm not sure what to go with...
prolly gona have to go with the old shitty fixed size luks container and expand it manually when i run out of space, since it's the most robust option to hedge against data loss...

let's say you are doing daily backups but only access the encrypted files once every 2 months, you are then needlessly unlocking the encrypted container 60 times more often than needed, so if some malicious actor gained access to your server for a week or two before you notices, he would have access to your files every time the luks gets mounted for backups

your encrypted data should never be decrypted unless you actually need to access them to use them
>>
>>109376597
ext4 native fscrypt is the most performant and straightforward. Hides file names and no risk of single sector loss losing files. Though you can also just make a backup of your LUKS header.

I've been trying to google this and I guess I get the logic that a different admin account wouldn't increase security since they would need the admin password regardless, no matter if it's your daily driver or not. But it feels weird to have 1 password when given the option. Is it safe?

>>
>>109377594
most distros that force a user on you lock the root account entirely.
>>
>>109377740
I'm the one asking so I'm definitely not the authority, but I think they mean they'll create another user account that has sudo privileges, which you'll then have to use the different password for. I guess root login is disabled regardless.
>>
>>109377502
I don't know about CachyOS specifically, but it's common on Linux to have a normal account for using your desktop that has sudo privileges so it can switch to root as necessary. As root and your less privileged user account are both accounts, they have their own passwords. However, when using sudo (rather than logging directly as root), you would be using the sudoer's password, and NOT root's password. Since most of the time you will be using sudo anyway, it is sort of clean to have the root's password be same as the sudoers', if you are the only user on the system.
>>
>>109377502
>>109377794
By the way if you want to increase security, as other anons mentioned, you can lock the root account so nobody can log in as root and the only way to do so is using sudo. That way you don't have to worry about the root password at all.
>>
>>109377828
and how is this increasing security?

In the same way that having a different password for root and the sudoer "increases security".

I haven't used KDE in a while but you should be able to reorder tray icons with the tray applet configuration window. (looks like picrel on Trinity)
Yes, it's retarded. Most desktops do it this way so it's probably something to do with an FDO standard, so you can blame Red Hat for that.
>Also problems with audio when it starts up from quiet. Like small sounds are all choppy.
Never had this issue, must be a problem with Cachy OS's default config. If it really bothers you try tracking down their github issues and see if there's already a discussion about it. If you still have an issue on another distro try explicitly installing Pulseaudio.
>Also audacity display issues. Maybe something to do with wayland?
Probably, we warned you about Wayland.
>>
>>109377879
>>109377918
If we want to split hairs about this, for all intents and purposes the sudoer *is* root. That's you. You are root. The root password can be different from that of the sudoer. This can be done if so inclined, but isn't strictly necessary. The root account can even be locked for that Winnie the Pooh in a tuxedo feeling. The sudoer uses his or her own password when logging in as root via sudo, rather than root's password. That is the function of sudo. If you don't like it, uninstall sudo or remove yourself from the sudoers file.

Now you may be asking "if I am root, why am I not always logged in as root?" The answer is that eventually you would do something stupid like delete libc.so.6 by accident and break your system, and then you would complain about how CachyOS sucks and is terrible and flame the distro maintainers. However, if you delete libc.so.6 as root (via sudo or logged in as root), you would be doing that deliberately and purposefully, and that changes everything.

Also if you set root's password to an empty password or something like "root" or "123456", this has the potential to *decrease* security quite radically. Although that depends entirely on what you intend to use your computer for.

All of this root vs sudo discussion is pointless. Linux has zero idea of user vs admin essentially.

Windows has granual ACL's where a user account could install and run programs in the user scope, but can only run proframs from the machine scope, and to act on the machine scope administrator access is needed.

On Linux there are only two scopes: non-root and root. If you're root, you can wipe your UEFI. But since desktop Linux is such a mess due to how it tries to be like Windows but is tethered to the Unix ways, the same privileges that can erase the UEFI are needed to install any software whatsoever, the user scope doesn't exist. Whether you use sudo or su, you will still be giving root privileges to whichever binary you'll be running, the only difference is that sudo applies to a singular command and su puts you into a persistent root shell.

So there are no security benefits between the two as the real security "issue" so to speak is how you have to use root privileges to do anything on Linux. It's either read only or all security protocols off.

It's still the same. nVidia does appear to be working with Valve, but it's unknown if they're just working on getting gamescope to work or if they're actually tackling the performance issues. So there's a chance things will improve, but probably not until next year.

>>109381378
>It seemed to work fine
It never did. You're delusional. As I said, it only works for some specific CLI tools and libraries. But a real program used by the end user (or developer) will in 99.99999% cases be something that does more than just a single thing.

You're effectively arguing that an abacus is better than a calculator, which just isn't the case. "Do one thing well" is something that could only be a majority of tools/software in caveman times or before transistors were invented.

Not my argument. A program that constantly bloats to add more things is in a constant state of inefficiency. This is the concept where the modern design goal is to monopolize as much as possible.

If it's a videogame then does being a video game well. Adding AI to play the videogame, or adding an in-game browser does not make it better. That is the current state of bloat, especially with trying to ram AI in everything.

That "Guy" is Linus Torvalds the creator of Linux. Yes, he really doesn't like the fact that Stallman wants to take credit.

The naming controversy is really stupid because both of them are 100% right in their views they just talk past each other.

Linus likes the GPL and prefers it over something like MIT. He doesn't like the additional restrictions added to GPLv3 though and in particular didn't like the way certain people tried to strong arm and force the kernel into adopting it at the time. For him the GPLv2 is already perfect.

Well unfortunately for you KDE Plasma is the most feature-rich Linux DE. If you want more and the things you want aren't provided by 3rd party KDE extensions, then you need to start extending it yourself.

"bloat" is a meme term that means nothing. It's an entirely subjective epithet. Clearly people don't find AI bloat when it comes to assistance in editing documents.
>>
>>109381957
Install a theme that has transparency baked-in. Some of the most popular global themes have transparency. Apparently the official Oxygen theme will be released to KDE soon. Or clone the default theme and modify it to have transparency yourself. There's no other way.

do you run the zen kernel on arch?
>>
>>109378849
You can trivially insert a privileged user who can only install software. Just because you don't know how to do it doesn't mean it's a limitation of the system. Even sudo can allow people on a certain machine to run things as a user other than root for the purpose of installing software. The kernel has MAC rules and ACLs for this. Linux can do pretty much anything Windows does wrt complex permissions.
>>
>>109378849
even on windows the typical situation is that you're either a limited/unprivileged user, or you're an administrator. there's no difference in that regard.
linux, as well as windows, absolutely support more granular user privileges, more than just a binary "you can do nothing" or "you can do anything".

the very nature of permissions makes it very much a "pebkac" kind of issue, like there's no way to do this generically, anything you do that is done well is custom to the user in question. linux and windows does permissions differently, but not differently enough that one could argue one system does basic segregation of authority better than another.

I'm looking at the 2015 man page of MPlayer:
https://archive.is/2026.07.27-153944/https://ar1.stilucky.xyz/raw/4JgSQCCpLrhqb7bWtfsMyBH-73b1DjarqVtEK9AMyVU

It can play a bunch of standardized(?) protocols that I didn't know about:
br:// is BluRay, dvd:// is DVD, dvdnav:// is IDK, vcd:// is Video CD, tv://, radio://, dvb:// is IDK, tivo://, mf:// is IDK, ftp://, etc.

I assume that mpv can also play all of those.

>>109381577
>>109381960
AI is controversial and introduces privacy concerns. Therefore, there should be a non-AI fork of the program you can download instead. Like how there's package-name and package-name-devel (devel = development branch or fork).
>>
>>109384337
mpv is a fork of mplayer/mplayer2 so it can naturally play all these too.
>>
>>109384364
>mpv is a fork of mplayer/mplayer2
OK. I think I remembered reading something about that.

I see that it also plays the ipfs:// protocol:
$ IPFS_GATEWAY=http://127.0.0.1:8081 mpv ipfs://[CID here]/[filename here].mp4

It probably defaults to http://127.0.0.1:8080 for GW so I set an env variable to my nonstandard port.

i had issues with 7.1.2 and 7.1.4 but tried it again with 7.1.5 and it's been fine so far. i'll see how it goes
>>
>>109384337
dadnav i believe is dvd but with dvd menu/navigation support, i know mpv doesn't support this.
tv will be for tv tuners i presume, dvb is a digital radio standard, tivo was a tv recording device.
not everything mplayer/2 supported is supported by mpv, mpv (and mplayer2) trimmed out a lot of lesser-used functionality from mplayer, especially older stuff and the encoder (mencoder)

hi so I've got this old machine I've been trying to breath some life into. Running on double core i3 with a gtx 1050ti, old motherboard.
I managed to get arch kde running on it quite fine except for 1 big issue...
Moving the cursor spikes the CPU usage to around 30%.
I've tried Wayland plasma, X11 plasma, COSMIC desktop initially which just wayland so idk if that matters.
When I'm idle the cpu usage goes down to 1-3%
I've followed a bunch of tips from some clanker models but nothing helped so far.
I had to get the legacy nvidia proprietary drivers that have the xx suffix or smth like that idk if that might be the issue.
>>
>>109385948

That's completely fucking pointless. The AI in OnlyOffice is an opt-in feature and you're the one picking your model, which can be a locally hosted AI instance instead of a remote server. So the anon schizoing about OnlyOffice is just retarded.

Yeah, among braindead twitter users. In the real world everyone uses ChatGPT and Gemini on a weekly or daily basis.

Once I took my old disk image backup of Arch and updated it for fun. It was fine. I'll say that again. It was fine.
Nothing exploded and the system was still usable. I did have to re-install the keyring though. As long as you don't get filtered by having to manually do that then you'll be mostly okay.
