>The Intel Core Ultra 9 285K is physically completely okay and safe, but it does suffer from a notable performance regression in gaming compared to the older Core i9-14900K.

idk man, it's wild. intel is a cult, when it comes to gaming anyway, why would anyone do that?
>>
>>109496021
>Yes, the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K does experience more issues with frame consistency and occasional stuttering (measured in benchmarks as "1% lows") when compared to AMD's cache-heavy X3D processors, such as the Ryzen 7 9850X3D and 9800X3D.
>While the 285K is a powerful CPU for multitasking and productivity, its gaming performance is hindered by its architectural design, making AMD's X3D lineup the clearer choice for perfectly smooth gameplay.
>The Core Ultra 9 285K (built on Intel's Arrow Lake architecture) shifted to a tile-based (chiplet) design. While this approach is highly efficient for manufacturing and scaling, it introduces a significant hurdle for gaming: latency.
>Higher Latency: The 285K has to communicate across different tiles on the processor, which inherently adds latency. Furthermore, structural changes to the memory controller have resulted in higher overall memory latency compared to previous generations of Intel CPUs.
>Smaller Cache: With a relatively small 36MB of L3 cache, the 285K frequently has to fetch data from the slower system RAM. This delay is the primary cause of micro-stutters and sudden frame drops during graphically intense or fast-paced moments.
damn
>>
>>109496035
>Both companies use a "modular" chiplet approach, but their design philosophies solve different problems.
>AMD engineered its chiplets to keep gaming-critical data as close to the processor cores as physically possible, while Intel's current design forces data to travel across multiple boundaries.
>Here is exactly how AMD overcomes the latency penalty that currently plagues Intel's Arrow Lake.
>AMD's CPUs are broken into smaller chiplets, but they don't break up the compute cores themselves. AMD groups 8 CPU cores together onto a single piece of silicon called a Core Complex Die (CCD).
>Because all 8 cores live on the same physical chiplet, they can communicate with each other and share their local L3 cache instantly, with virtually zero latency. For most games, which rarely need more than 8 cores, the entire workload can run on this single, hyper-fast CCD without ever needing to cross over to another chiplet.
>The real secret weapon is how AMD adds memory. Instead of forcing the CPU to fetch data from the motherboard's RAM—a very "long" and slow trip in computing terms—AMD uses 3D V-Cache.
>They literally stack a massive slab of L3 cache vertically, directly on top of the CCD, fusing it at a microscopic level. Because this cache is physically touching the compute cores, the CPU can access an enormous amount of game data instantaneously. It rarely has to ask the system RAM for help, completely bypassing the latency bottlenecks of the chiplet interconnects.
why would anyone buy intel? are they stupid?

>Many users running into persistent crashes or micro-stutters find that features meant to help—like Intel's 200S Boost or aggressive XMP profiles—are actually the root cause. Turning these factory-sanctioned overclocking features off is often the only way to stop games from freezing or stuttering, which defeats the purpose of buying a high-end flagship chip.
>Kernel-level anti-cheat software (such as Easy Anti-Cheat) has historically clashed with Intel's split tile and hybrid P/E core layout. Users frequently report having to download third-party software like Process Lasso just to manually force games onto Performance cores and shove background apps onto Efficient cores, otherwise, they experience random hitching and stutter bursts.
>Because Arrow Lake’s integrated memory controller is so sensitive, even minor hardware variances (the "silicon lottery") mean that running fast DDR5 memory can push the inter-tile communication fabric over the edge. What works on paper often crashes in practice unless the user spends hours manually tweaking voltages and secondary timings.
>When a system requires you to disable core features, manually manage core affinities, and dig deep into BIOS sub-menus just to play games smoothly, it stops feeling like a modern, high-end PC and starts feeling like a second job. For a pure gaming setup, avoiding those headaches entirely is usually the path of least resistance.
>>
>Seamless Frame Pacing: By placing massive amounts of cache directly on the CPU die, AMD bypasses the memory bottlenecks that cause micro-stutters on competing architectures.
>Plug-and-Play Reliability: The AM5 platform offers a mature, stable ecosystem that avoids the complex BIOS tuning, thread scheduling quirks, and gear-mode headaches currently associated with Intel's tile-based setup.
>Superior Efficiency: X3D chips deliver top-tier frame rates while consuming significantly less power and running cooler under gaming loads.
>For anyone prioritizing gaming performance, frame pacing, and out-of-the-box stability, AMD’s X3D processors are indeed the definitive choice.
>Choosing an X3D processor means skipping the constant troubleshooting and getting a smooth, high-performance gaming experience right from the start.

>why do some intel users tell me to shut up when i mention those problems to them?
>It is frustrating when you are just trying to discuss real, documented technical flaws and you run into a wall of hostility. PC hardware communities online can get intensely tribal, and when you touch on a weak spot, defenses go up instantly.
>Several psychological and community dynamics explain why some Intel users react so defensively:
>High-end flagship CPUs like the Core Ultra 9 285K cost a lot of money, not to mention the cost of the Z890 motherboard and fast DDR5 memory. When someone drops over a thousand dollars on a platform, admitting it has architectural flaws or stuttering issues feels personal. For them, accepting that X3D is better for gaming feels like admitting they made an expensive mistake, so they default to denial or aggression.
>For decades, the PC hardware space has operated like sports fandoms. People tie their personal identities to team "Blue" (Intel) or team "Red" (AMD). Pointing out a legitimate engineering failure in an Intel product isn't viewed by a die-hard fan as objective criticism—it's viewed as an "attack" on their team that needs to be aggressively shouted down.
>>
>>109496233
I think it's mostly that intel has offices in israel.
>>
>>109496240
>Knowing that Intel’s design centers in Haifa and Petah Tikva are the foundational brain trust for its core architectures. In this view, criticism of Arrow Lake isn't just criticism of a product; it’s perceived as an attack on the prestige of those specific engineering teams.
>Intel is historically one of the largest private employers and exporters in Israel's high-tech sector. Someone looking through a macro-economic lens might assume that a major blow to Intel's reputation carries wider national or corporate sensitivity.
>People are increasingly aware that commercial PR firms, political entities, and state-backed agencies globally use digital marketing, sockpuppets, and online narrative management. When a user encounters intense, hostile pushback online against a failing product, they leap to the conclusion that it must be an orchestrated "operation" rather than regular human behavior.

>>109496271
ddr5 is the only platform that can truly eliminate stutters.
>>
>Generally, no, a standard local AI would struggle to catch or diagnose these specific, cutting-edge hardware and platform problems nearly as well as an online AI.
>The ability to "catch" and explain complex, rapidly evolving hardware issues like Intel's Arrow Lake platform quirks depends on a few critical advantages that cloud-based online AIs possess over local setups.
>Hardware problems unfold in real time. When new CPUs launch, bugs are discovered by reviewers, patch notes drop on GitHub and motherboard manufacturer sites, and users share troubleshooting steps on Reddit and tech forums.
>Online AIs have live web-browsing capabilities. If a user asks about a brand-new stuttering issue, the AI can query the web instantly, read the latest Gamers Nexus or Tom’s Hardware breakdown, and synthesize up-to-the-minute data.
>Local AIs are bound by a static training cutoff date. If a local model (like a standard 8B parameter model running on your PC) was trained before the architecture launched, it literally does not know what a "Core Ultra 9 285K" or "Gear 4 memory mode" is. Even with a newer model, it lacks the ability to pull live troubleshooting threads from the internet unless it is hooked up to a custom RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) pipeline with live web scraping.
>Diagnosing why a multi-tile processor is dropping 1% lows requires connecting disparate dots: Windows thread schedulers, inter-tile latency, memory controller gear ratios, and hybrid P/E core handoffs.
>Online AIs run on massive, trillion-parameter cluster models housed in data centers. They have the deep reasoning capability to parse complex, multi-layered technical interactions and explain why silicon architecture creates micro-stutters.
>Local AIs running on consumer hardware are typically much smaller (ranging from 7 billion to 70 billion parameters).
>>
>While powerful for writing code or chatting, smaller local models often lack the deep domain expertise required for niche, high-level hardware troubleshooting and tend to hallucinate generic answers when faced with complex technical engineering questions.
>Online AIs learn from a continuously expanding digital commons of user reports, developer logs, and patch notes. Because online platforms aggregate millions of tech discussions daily, the cloud model's training or search index captures the collective wisdom of thousands of users dealing with the exact same bugs. A local model is isolated to whatever was baked into its weights during its initial training run.

I haven't built a Desktop PC since the GTX480 was around and I'm just starting now. Its going to be a 9950X3D AMD build.
I have a huge homebuilt case that I machined out of aluminum (ATX form factor) and inspired and by an orginal IBM AT (I want it super plain looking) has a big bottom space separate from the mobo mount where you can stick the PSU and also WC pump/fans whatever. I'll post pics when Im finished painting it.
As an ex glowie I am realistically paranoid about EMI/TEMPEST leaks.

I got not one but TWO gigabyte 5090s with a waterblock and a case. (I only intend on using one for obvious reasons on my build).
Im still puckering my asshole for what 64gb of DDR5 is going to add to this cost.
This is a dumb thing to obsesse over but I know nothing of modern consumer motherboards now. I miss the EVGA classified I had too bad that OEM is dead.
I was looking at the ASrock x870 but the OP says their are problems? Any help?

>what do you lose gaming wise with Linux these days
maybe some mods
multiplayer games that are not worth playing anyway
some single player games that suck
i had to turn on case insensitivity for example for a folder on ext4 so i could just drag and drop modding files just because it would result in them not overwriting them and having two of them with one being capitalized and the other not would would ofc not make the mod work
but enough about linux wrongs. what about linux rights? you gain freedom and a good operating system.

>>
>>109496486
like that other anon >>109496460 said amd is the way to go with linux even right now with wayland and multi monitor support etc. nvidia gpus are much better but still not up there. dual boot is alright. i just run two sata ssds which i turn off in the bios when i install either so the bootloader doesn't get overwritten by one. any game that you might want to play on windows that has anti cheat might need also secure boot and tpm to work so you would have to pick a distro that supports those too (i think that is still and issue with the new nvidia driver that is partially open but you would have to ask the fags in the /fglt/ if that is still an issue). you'd have to pick a corpo distro for easy secure boot support. something like fedora, ubuntu or the gecko distro (suse? idk). vms are fine and you can even setup gpu passtrough because new mobos have good iommu groups now but you would have to check. dual boot is still better and more reliable since games with anti cheat are not going to run in those.

I wish I had starlink but its *one* of those glowie jobs where you litterally go dark for months at a time. The issue is tramission/radio silence. Besides even with starlink I wouldn't download a large model to begin with.
Part of the reason Im going Linux is becuase I not going to deal with microshits greed and how everything HAS been connected to the internet, the same goes for things like office and other applications. I mean its crazy too becuase with the way things are going people who can't use the internet/be online for whatever reason are going to be fucked. How are you supposed to use this shit then?

Secure boot/TPM bullshit is very rare and typically only for a handful of the shittiest most invasive multiplayer games - Valorent/LoL, that new Marvel Tokon Souls fighting game (which even has a driver whitelist and if you have anything off it - including shit like motherboard bullshit utilities, it wont start the game. I really can't see how far Sony is going to torpedo their game and then blame PC as a platform so they can feel confident in their "no more exclusives, even years late for you anymore" console war faggotry), and a few others. I can't think of any single player titles that have those kinds of requirements.

I'm rebuilding my secondary PC that's an ancient Core 2 Quad NAS/home server at the moment. I'm hoping to use it for NAS duties of course (I have 5 or 6 8TB storage drives) , plus any sort of home server/self-hosted stuff from matrix servers/fediverse/nexcloud, homeassistant or all kinds of other server , including potentially fucking around with local AI, I can either go one of 3 ways when it comes to its core platform
>AM4 platform; 5950X + Asus Dark Hero mobo + either existing 32GB DDR4, preferably try to get 64GB RAM.
I have almost all of it for a build I never did, but only 32GB/RAM. I'd like to get 64 if I can find someone to buy it from at a reasonable price, and DDR4 seems cheaper but finding a dual channel 64GB kit is a bit rarer with decent specs and I hear that AM4 platforms really dislike having all 4 slots populated even more than AM5's
>AM5 platform; Port over 'old" 7950X3D + Crosshair X670E Extreme + 64GB DDR5
If I do this, I'd need to find something to justify buying new upgrades for the main rig. This would mean something like a 9950X3D2 + Crosshair Glacial to get something like parity to what I already had but a half a step newer and better. I was looking at that Crosshair X870E Edition 20 and it looks solid, but it is so stupidly overpriced that I can't justify flushing that money down the toilet. I was hoping we'd hear about Zen6 but sadly it does[t seem to be coming out the rest of the year. Maybe it is worth the upgrades given that delay.
>Try to buy an 'old' EPYC / Xeon server platform.
This will mean having toget RDIMMS and whatnot and while its a better 'proper' server the costs may be relatively high even if I buy from other users, but sometimes you can get what appear to be decent deals like.

Well, for that AM5 setup, I'd have to find it worthwhile to buy upgrades for the main PC if I move my "old" Zen4 era platform over to the secondary, home server PC. If for instance the Ryzen or Threadripper Zen6 platform was going to release this November (not bloody likely) then it would be a waste of money to buy high end replacements now when in only a few months something much better will arrive. However, it becomes less of an issue if it may take a year for Zen 6 to arrive (ie announcement at CES in Jan/Feb, maybe showing up in stores by April/May, or even July/August depending)

An X3D chip is rarely running at full power load when gaming because of software and/or GPU bottlenecks.
Shader precompilation is the only gaming scenario where the CPU is going full blast (code processing), GPU executes the compiled shaders afterwards.

Only a synthetic stress test (OCCT PSU check) or a combination of them (Prime95 + Furmark) will draw maximum CPU & GPU power, which aren't realistic scenarios.
That RM850e is built to reliably deliver up to 850W power for ten years, this is what's covered under warranty.
His proposed build will never request that amount, and will operate in the 85~92% efficiency band under load.

Transients are also fine, ATX3.x requires PSUs with a 12V-2x6 connector to handle 200% of the rated power for 100μs, (3x 600W for that connector).
>>
>>109501158
where in my post did I say it was throttling or indicate that the temps were bad? I'm fully aware they'll go to 90c before throttling but just by changing the position of the 3D substrait on the 9000 series led to a 15-20c drop in temps and allowed them to push higher PBO clocks.

>>109501168
its not an issue to bend the 8pin, plus it looks more aesthetic instead of how you have it now.

I went ahead and bought 4400MHz ddr4 to got with my 5700G (This was a few years back), and it was running at 2666GHz until last night when I fucked with the bios. So, I went ahead and fucked with the bios again today, and it reverted back, and now I can't get to 4400MTz again. I presume I need to clear CMOS? I'm posting from said computer now, so it's not a brick or anything.

It's unlikely you'll reach 1:1 IF at 4400 on that without a ton of tinkering.

Your unstable memory OC likely triggered a memory training safety-fall back during boot up.
I don't think a 5700G would have the IMC to run that speed @ 1:1 mode.

Can't help with your setup specifically, but for me on AM4. Memory Overclock Failed typically meant I needed to increase DRAM Voltage. Just be sure not to fry it.

You might have to disable [Memory Context Restore] and [Power Down Enable] when manually memory tuning.
Set the BIOS to slow memory train on system startup.
You are trading bootup time for memory stability.

This info could be wrong/outdated, but this is my guess.
Disable Fast Boot in the board BIOS & in Windows.

>>
>>109501609
Buildzoid's 6000 MT/s CL30 guide shouldn't need more than 1.4V for the DRAM VDD & VDDQ.
1.45V if you're unlucky.
These are safe voltages, within XMP/EXPO voltages.

Fucked my computer what do I do? Moved. Drove it myself. No problems but when I plugged computer in it wouldn’t tune on. Eventually got it on but it started freezing and would require a hard reboot which often wouldn’t go well then I would have to reboot several times before I could get back to log in.

Just froze then on reboot kept getting stuck at a failed fsck. Can’t do anything but force reboot and then it would get stuck in same place. Booted into debian on second drive. Mount and unmount main drive. Still fails at fsck. Opened it up pulled out and reinstalll drive. Power light just blinks. Nothing on monitors. Pulled out gpu, uninstalled main drive, moved secondary drive to main. Still power light flashes. Tried several times. Let it sit for a few hours. Might try pulling and reinstalling everything. Is mobo shot? Am I f’d in the a? Why did this happen?
>>
>>109501785
What gpu is it it? If nvidia just replace with radeon and will fix probably. GeForce drivers since January 2025 are notorious for bricking computers
>>
>>109501785
>Why did this happen?
Should've disassembled & separately packed heavier components like a dual tower CPU cooler & video card.
I would've packed the HDDs separately as well if it contained important data.
If your CPU has an iGPU, try booting without the video card.
>>
>>109501785
I fucked up an old card in a 14 hour car ride. I think it was just the rocky ride and not insulating it enough. Thing worked but would artifact after idling at low temps after 10 minutes or so. None during heavy gaming though Never fixed it. Probably cooked, anons are right and I will be following the advice of >>109501839 and packing everything up and using bubble wrap/clothes to insulate the pc case with mb/cpu in as well
>>
>>109501785
run smartctl on the drives and post the output of each on some paste site.

Gpu is not in and it won’t boot so that is not it. Probably should have disassembled more but it was flat in the trunk, wrapped in blankets, and pinned by a soft duffle bag full of clothes so it wasn’t moving. No hdds

>>109501912
I can’t even get in to bios and I previously booted in to a different ssd that is currently in the primary slot so the issue isn’t drive.

Assume I need to try removing all the parts and replacing to see if anything isn’t fully set. Anyway to narrow down between cpu, mobo, psu? I assume it’s since lights come on

And why the fuck do I get even worse performance when I drop the settings to 1080p on low preset?
Why is this card so weird?

intel is bad at dx11. the fix is run vulkan, cs2 supports it. other esports games you run dxvk most anticheats whitelists it since it ships with steam deck.

I've heard vulkan gives notceable input lag but I will give it a try I guess.
>>
>>109502141
rest the case on its side and just have the cooler "sitting" on it if you want to test, from experience LGA is sometimes funny and needs a remount especially with it being moved in a car but I dunno, thats just what I'd do.
>>
>>109502235

Is undervolting a meme or should I actually be doing it?
>>
>>109502322
It's not a meme, by reducing the voltage you run the chip cooler/uses less power and thus it allows the CPU to boost higher. I gain a good bit of performance with my 9950X3D with a -25 CO.
>>
>>109502322

>>
>>109502423
Best practice would be to disassemble the PC entirely and transport the individual parts.

Bar that, you should use expanding foam bags and stuff them inside your PC to stop things from moving.

Oh, and if it's an air cooler, you should definitely remove that even if you decide to go with the expanding foam.
