Has anyone here moved from a 2160p display to a 1440p one, and if so, how did that fare for you? For reference, my current rig has a:
>9070XT and 7900X
with a
>32" 3840x2160p@144Hz IPS display
Been seeing the latest 5th gen 34" OLED ultrawides, and they look cool, but I don't know if it'll be that awkward moving back to (3440x)1440p. I haven't even seen 2560x1440p for over four years now, so I have no idea. It'd be great to have an easier-to-run res and higher refresh rate limit, but I don't know if it'd be a blurry eyesore or not. Though, the ultrawide immersion sounds like a fun change of pace, and a more responsive experience would be really nice.

I'm aware of importance of PPI and scaling. My old monitor several years ago was a 27" or 25" (I don't remember) 2560x1440p display. You'd think the PPI would be good enough, but I felt compelled to upgrade to a 32" 3840x2160p display back then because Asiatic text was getting garbled without like 150% text scaling, which was bad for my work. Except now, the greater predicament for me is what games will look like when dealing with ~110PPI (the 34") vs ~138PPI (my current 32"). I'm used to this resolution now after all.

Depends on the case.
Does it have a removable mobo tray?
A removable tray for the radiator?
Enough space to work in it?
What and how many cables do you have to install?
Where can you feed the cables through or hide them?
Are the cables long enough?

You install the mobo in the case after installing on it: the screw threads for the cooler, the CPU and optionally the picrel contact frame for the CPU which I recommend, the RAM and the NVMe SSDs.

You then connect the power cords to the mobo. Then you install the cooler and other necessary cables.
GPU and its power cord last.

Cyberpower is selling an Ryzen 8700F + RX 9070 (non-XT) prebuilt for less than $1600 before tax.
https://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Back-to-School-Special-II (use code: GAMER2026).

Pic shows a comparable list of individually bought components (swapped CPU to 7700X because it's cheaper than 8700F, & latter is an 8-core chip).
8700F will likely run a bit worse than a 7700/X & 7600/X in gaming.
Mystery meat 80+ Gold 800W PSU & 600 TBW DRAM-less 1TB SSD would be the concerning components.

The included DDR5 memory is likely to be Hynix-A/M die if they are using Klevv Bolt V kits (Klevv usually source SK Hynix ICs through SK conglomerate connection).

>When do you put the mobo in the case
Unwrap the motherboard and set it on top of its cardboard box.
Install the CPU, the CPU cooler's mounting bracket(s), memory modules, and M.2 SSDs before setting the board inside the case.

>what order do you put the cables in?
After installing the motherboard inside the case, connect the CPU power cables & its cooling fans/pump before mounting the AIO pump.
The order after this doesn't matter too much, but video card last as the other anon suggested.
If your CPU have an iGPU, you might want to check if the PC boots to BIOS before you install the video card.
>>
>>109504368
wrong, if you have a modular power supply, it'll be MUCH easier to install the motherboard power before it's in the case.

AI investment cant go on forever, eventually someone wins out and investors/banks aren't going to go "please take a trillion dollar to compete with google" and the datacenter demand will taper off.
The new supply will come online with 1-2 year lag, and ddr5 is over a decade old tech by then, using larger process nodes than leading edge processors.

right now we are in the gassy make everyone depend on AI phase.
we have not even reached the enshittification/profit phase, every company is losing money.
I don't think ram prices will go down if they succeed in the enshittification phase. Why? Because they will have more money to buy more ram. The only way ram prices go down, is if AI fails at enshittification/profit, or they make more ram chips (none of the fab makers are making new fabs after these new price hikes, except for ones that were planned before the price hikes, and making too much supply means HUGE profit losses like they did every single time after there was a shortage).

yes, this is for making people depend on AI. open source models exist to suck. closed source models exist to make money (eventually).

>>
>>109505272
Right now, it looks really bad for AI, I agree. There is no money to be made. Huge losses being made to compete.
But like I said, nobody is using AI right now.
If every AI company died right now. We would still be fine, the AI companies won't be, but everything else will still work.
We aren't going to bend over and spend 5x more right now. Just wait for the enshittification to start, why would you pay for a free AI provider when anthropic costs just as much? (I agree, subscriptions make profit based on unused capacity, people forgetting they have a sub, free AI providers will make you pay per token, which saves a lot of money for the average forgetter).
By the way, I don't actually know claude's pricing but I do know that GLM 5.2 / deepseek whatever is very expensive.

The RAM prices increase has very little to do with AI that just how its being slup. The RAM makers (and most of the semi conductor industry ) is essentially a massive cartel of 4 corps that just haven't gotten their rectums nuclear fisted by antitrust and anti competitive fixing. A good luck with that ever happening with the current *good goyim in chief* enforcing any free-market protections/laws. The crazy thing is Samsung, Microsemi etc did get their peepees slapped for BLATENT price collusion around 2009 to 11 but they now figure they can get away with it.
DDR5/conventional RAM has actually better margins and profit than HDR.

>>109505737
RAID isn't categorically better than optical for backups, it's just a high availability solution. Optical is fine for stuff you aren't going to touch for years. You also want to look into a 3-2-1 backup strategy, your NAS isn't immune to fire.

>RAID isn't categorically better than optical for backups
how many anime cds do you exactly have? i have non. i do have a second nas that i use to backup my first nas. if one of the drives fails in either one i get to keep all of my data. having a cd in case of a flood or anything wouldn't really have any advantage. all those 3 2 1 solutions are for companies who may get compromised in some way. they have tape drives and readers etc. they cost like 5k or more. not applicable. i just don't want to lose pictures and movies. a zfs software raid is more than just a high availability solution. if any data block doesn't match the checksum when checked the data gets automatically fixed by the file system.

This camera is really shit, but I finally decided to start installing parts today, the apnx v1 case is really convenient, love the easily removable fan brackets. The case was cheap only costing $80, though it didn't come with a fan hub which I just realized is a problem for the batch of be quiet fans I had bought for the build. Had to reassess what fans I'd be using because of that fuck up. It worked out in the end with some spare thermaltake fans I daisy chained to bottom intake.
Going to re route some of the fan and sata cables and install the PSU cables later

my NVME disconnected randomly yesterday and will now only reappear on boot and then disconnects again after launching games or at seemingly random times during read/write. I somehow managed to backup everything important on it (like 3tb was copied uninterrupted but it will shit itself if I launch Palworld). I'm planning on RMAing it because it's only been like 5 months since I bought it but I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone has seen this before and knows if the drive is truly borked or if I'm missing something. It's a Lexar NM790, doesn't show up in LexarDiskManager, HWinfo says 0% drive available spare but I don't know if it's reading it properly.

I have an RTX 5070 and I'm thinking about buying a 2160p monitor. Will it be enough performance to get a good experience in a mix of old and somewhat modern games if I adjust settings? Or would I be better off getting a 5K2K display?

It pains me to see all the 3rd party non-sense for NVMe storage. I just don't fucking get it man. I'd be tempted to say it was a bad overclock on my CPU, but it wasn't clocked. It was bone stock everything just with hyperthreading disabled and PL1/PL2 states set to a max ceiling.

Some software are hardcoded for hyper threading like that
They're probably wrongly assuming core 0 and core 1 are the same physical core and share resources but are causing both of your non hyperthreaded cores to keep hitting L3 cache to pass data to each other which has a larger latency cost and causes stutters

yea I plugged my dilemma into chatGPT and it told me Elden Ring could be programmed to take advantage of hyper threading CPU threads to take care of the minor shit like audio, texture streaming, AA, etc and by disabling HT, it makes the game work harder than it normally has to. Probably on par with what you said. Either way I'm squeezing this CPU for all its worth. 2018 CPU and I just can't seem to find a game I can't get >85 fps on modern titles at 1440p in. Maybe when Ryzen 10th gen releases lmao

If it releases. At this rate I wouldn't be surprised if all computer companies just withdraw entirely from the consumer market. There's another part of me that wants to just buy something like a 9950X3D2, 128GB DDR5, and coast for as long as my current build, if not longer.

Wow stop being a pedantic retard. The performance from turning off hyperthreading was more than just clock speed because once upon a time I overclocked the CPU to 5.0GHz all cores on water cooling, all 16 threads enabled. The games that saw better performance were all massive multiplayer games. I saw an average 15 fps gain in extremely heavy CPU bound scenarios with HT off and 5.0GHz vs HT on with 5.0GHz. Not making the physical core share cache with a HT thread helped.

is this a good pc that could last quite awhile or should i revise?

get rid of the mechanical hard drive. Why do you need 64GB of RAM let alone on 4 sticks? Just get 2x 32GB sticks. Don't buy a 1080p monitor in 2026. Get 1440p minimum. You're also spending like $420 on keyboard, mouse, and headset. Surely you can get something cheaper and get a 9070 XT instead of a 9060 XT? What are you trying to do with this build?

what kind of workstation? because anyone doing anything actually workstation based isn't buying an 8c16t 1 generation old CPU and an AMD GPU when all working loads that matter using Nvidia CUDA acceleration and software suite. With prices as they are right now, you're buying 64GB RAM when for that money alone, you could be buying a better GPU, possibly better CPU and a bunch of other shit

>Photoshop/Video editing workstation
what software? If you're using adobe, they like Nvidia more. If you're doing some real casual shit, you can just brute force rendering with CPU and whatever GPU help AMD can help with. either way, you really need to evaluate just how much workstation work you're actually doing because 64GB of RAM vs 32GB of RAM is another $650+. That amount can get you a 9800X3D instead of a 7800X3D. It can also get you a 9070 XT or RTX 5070 instead of the 9060 XT. Lastly, like I mentioned you have close to $450 worth of peripheals. Just get some cheap Chinese mechanical keyboard from Amazon for $50, a decent mouse like the wired Logitech G502 Hero for $50, and a headset for no more than $100.

Ryzen 9000 is barely an upgrade over Ryzen 7000 for consumers and are stuck with the old layout of 8-cores/32mb(+64mb) L3 per ccd and Io die lag+high power draw that has been in use since Ryzen 3000/5000
Ryzen 10000 will fundamentally upheaval those old design bottlenecks with 12 core/48mb(+96mb) L3, a new Io die that is lower latency and lower power draw so I suggest waiting for that instead
>>
>>109513892
You can't really complain about ryzen when intel sucks so hard at gaming.

>Ryzen 10000 will fundamentally upheaval those old design bottlenecks with 12 core/48mb(+96mb) L3, a new Io die that is lower latency and lower power draw so I suggest waiting for that instead
my only concern is price. None of that shit means anything to me if those CPUs start at $1000, motherboards worth a fuck start at $400, and DDR5 is even more expensive than it is now. What used to once be a $1600 really solid build is like $5k these days

I mean shit, I went and took my girl to Chipotle with her little sister. Between the 3 of us all getting a burrito/bowl/salad, a big bag of chips with queso and guac, and 3 classic cokes, I spent like $75 after taxes. I get it, inflation etc, but man this time line sucks fat dick.

At least those hp laptops have a memory socket, and some of them have an nvme slot. Before ram got stupidly expensive, these low end hp laptops were a good way to get a beater burner laptop for cheap, to just buy refurbished and discounted for cheap and then install a bigger memory module and reformat with Linux. I did that
