Factorio isn't a videogame, it's a brain trainer.

Does it make sense to upgrade from a 5800x to a 9850x3d now? I am currently running it with a 6950xt and things are running okay for me now, just that in some games in some situations I am limited by the CPU. But there is certainly no strong necessity, it would mostly be a future proofing upgrade, and I would then upgrade my GPU when the next gen comes out. I think the current prices for the mobo, cpu and ram are still doable, and I am afraid it will get worse. Wait or not?

talked about this earlier in the thread but what are you going to use the cpu/gpu combo for?
i'd go for 5600 minimum since the L3 cache on the 5500 is cut down by HALF. i plopped a 5500 in my dad's machine paired with an rx 570 which is an ok since he doesn't play games, but for you there are major bottleneck issues for games and productivity

high framerate competitive on 1080p will suffer unless you're capping fps at 60 like the other guy, in which case this will be *okay*. playing on 1440p alleviates the bottleneck on the cpu.
heavy games like battlefield is out of the question. won't be able to max out on the cool stuff in cyberpunk.
i'm just finding the combo a bit wonky. gpu will be majorly underutilized because the cpu can't keep up. a 5600/5500x3d would fit better but of course will cost a bit more

Assuming that you found a used 3070 TI for $200, I would rather just get a 5060/9060.
Not because it's better value, but generally speaking, unlike the 1660 s/TI (which I mention for the other anon), the 3070 TI is competing in the price range of the 5060/9060. AKA no GPU's compete with a $100 price range.
If you want to save money, instead of skimping on the GPU, you could skimp on the DDR5, and go with intel/am4 ddr4 system. Yes it's not as fast as a 9600x, but you aren't going to be CPU capped on a 3070 TI with a 1440p monitor.

hello, I have a budget around 700 eur more or less and I'm from serbia. I'd like to ask for help regarding pc building, so far my pc is a shitty i5-3350p and amd radeon 5450 which barely runs half life 2 on low settings, I'm not looking to make the newest giga max pc that'll run gta VI on high settings, I just want one that can, at the very least, run games like fallout: new vegas, project zomboid, maybe gta V comfortably. I'd be more than happy. I don't wanna play the newest AAA titles. I'd buy a prebuilt, one offered a PC with geforce rtx 3050 which looked awesome to me, but I see they usually save on stuff like coolers and PSU which others say really shorten the PC's lifespan (this store in particular used an F tier rated PSU...), and according to the store's policy I wanted to buy a prebuilt one from, if you open the PC tower or change anything you lose warranty. I dont know jack shit about PC building but I think I could get someone to do it for me, the only problem is I dont know what to look for exactly. anything will be a upgrade compared to the PC I have now. thanks in advance.

>At $200 the 3070ti is competing with the 3050 and the b570, the 5060 is a $300 gpu.
The 3070 TI is not new, it's a used GPU.
A 5060/9060 is $300 and it's new, and it's pretty much the same performance.
Also I can't find 3070ti's for $200 on ebay, it's more like $250 + tax. But for $200 on ebay, it's a decent deal, but I am assuming that anon is buying the gpu on facebook marketplace which means no refunds.
The 1660 s/ti is a good used GPU to buy, because it has the same performance as the 3050, AND it's a GPU that nobody wants since it's half the strength of a 5060/9060.
Basically, the used market sucks because of supply and demand. There are many things you can buy from facebook marketplace where stuff is 1/4th the price of new (mainly due to shipping prices). GPU's and PC components just have fucked pricing (because people regularly buy cheap parts to resell on ebay at the real market price).

Pricing out the parts and building is a few hundred shekels more expensive than if I just bought an Andromeda PC. 2399 to buy this on newegg vs 2600 when built on part picker.

Even selecting cheaper components if I lose the prebuilt lottery, is more expensive. Besides, how enjoyable PC building was for me in the 4 new builds I've done over 20 years why wouldn't I go with the cheaper option? >but these pissants who buy large 4k TVs to watch their low bitrate stream sloppa fuck everything up for people with good eyesight.
if anything you need higher quality content because a larger screen will highlight bad content way more, it's the direct opposite
TV chads have good eyesight and more content aware
tiny slop monitor Betas can run low quality content and get away with it more because they can't even see all the detail

the sleeper truth nuke in resolution is that the difference going to 1440p from 1080p is so meaningless you barely notice it, if they were to sell 2560x1080 monitors instead of 3440x1440 I'd chose them in a blink of an eye because it's far less pixels, much easier to drive, you could run stuff at 300+ fps and get the ultrawide bonus easily

AMD is known for being very generous with the amount of vram in their cards.
>>
3440x1440 at 34" is simply too small to notice, at that resolution the monitors should've been 39"
2560x1080 should be the 34" option, at 3440x1440 at that size is just too cramped.
and the lower resolution of those two has almost half of the pixels, I'd totally change this 3440x1440 34" 180hz monitor I have for a 2560x1080 34" 300+ or 480hz and run the same competitive games at much higher rates and I just know it would be a better experience.

Yeah but I don’t want to pay Linus and all the eBay sellers are scammers.
>>
I need my pc hardware examined to find out what’s going wrong because I think my issue of crashes might be hardware related and Linux is less related.

How does one vet whether a local pc repair service is good or not?
What are the red flags?
I imagine all will be windows focused because of windows popularity too.
>>
>>109522769
Computers are extremely complicated and the labour and expertise that would be needed to fix any hardware issue would far exceed any replacement of an individual part.
Your issue is diagnosing what the part is and then replacing it.
>>
>>109522769
You could, also, perhaps, maybe just post what the symptoms are right here in PCBG and maybe one of the anons will stop fapping long enough to give you (shitty) advice.

Not that this would help you.
>>
>>109522826
>>109522861
Basically I was having a lot of crashes on Linux then my monitor died so I asked a guy and he said my gpu is fried so I wanted a 2nd opinion and asked another and he said the gpus are fine and the psu might be busted causing the crashes and the monitor is dead by coincidence as it is over ten years old.
So I am just confused. Just gonna bring my whole pc to one guy and hope he finds out what the problem is and then tells me what parts are broken so I can hopefully get replacements and refunds on warranty.

And new arctic fans to keep pc cool.

You can, you know, test those theories out by swapping each one of those parts. If you're paying for someone to "examine" those things as-is then you're being fleeced. You clearly need to be told something as simple as this.

I don’t have parts to swap to test. That’s the problem.

>just have an entire spare PC bro
>>
>>109523040
>>109523051
If you don't have any spare parts, the implication is also that if whoever you visit to help with the problem isn't immediately doing exactly that; using a replacement PSU, hooking it up to any other monitor, and using a different GPU OR removing it entirely and test using the iGPU (assuming your CPU has one), then they are not being honest.
>>
>>109523051
You know what they say, if you can't afford 3 PCs you can't afford a PC
>>
>>109523040
Yep it's challenging to troubleshoot a PC if you aren't tech savvy or don't have spares laying about.

Do you have any friends or someone at work that might help out?
>>
A spare drive, spare GPU and a spare PSU isn't a bad idea.
RAM, CPU and MOBO all change compatibility too often to have a reliable replacement for them.

Not suggesting you go out and buy them, but keep a spare set of parts, you know?

You guys ever used a computer so fast it gave you motion sickness

CPU and motherboards last 5+ years now because of AMD so those can be kept as spares if you upgrade somewhat frequently
One generation of ram lasts kinda long too

>>
>>109523257
Yeah, but if you upgrade, you're not very often upgrading to the same platform.
Like if you've got a decent AM5 CPU right now, are you gonna get another one before AM6 comes out?
>>
>>109523340
Seeing that am5 will be bleeding edge until zen8/am6 comes out in 2030-2031, I probably will
>>
>>109523372
AM5 is absolutely not going to be bleeding edge for 5 years anon.
They've said they're going to continue to support it, they never said it's going to be bleeding edge.
>>
>>109523396
Zen7 that's launching in 2028-2029 will be on am5
That's confirmation of am5 staying bleeding edge until 2030-2031 when zen8 launches
>>
>>109523410
DDR6 is set for 2028. Zen 6 will either add it as a midlife refresh (And thus there will be AM5 boards with DDR6 slots), or Zen 7 will be DDR6 and use the same socket, but have a compatible chipset.

Either way, AM5 boards with DDR5 cannot be "Bleeding edge" if there exists DDR6, because DDR6 will be the bleeding edge.
>>
>>109523442
Ddr6 seems like a big enough change that breaks socket compatibility
I doubt we'll get am5 ddr6 boards at all

Just upgraded from a 5600g and 6600 to a 5800xD3 and 7700XT (already have 32 GB DDR4 and a 650W psu) for $800 after tax, tip, shipping to my door and including a (((free))) liquid cooler (newegg bundle with the 5800xD3)
Plan was to build a long term 1080 gaming PC that can weather this whole hardware crisis without blowing the bank while also offering a little speed boost to my compile times and maybe let me tinker about with a little more AI without spending twice as much.
Only really play old, non graphics driven games. The only game I ever struggled to play was Oblivion Remastered but I got it to work using some performance mods. Looking forward I'd like to be able to run TES6 but honestly dont care much about modern gaming anyways.
I dont think the prices for the next gen / 16GB cards are ever gonna come down so I think it made sense to buy those two targetted upgrades and be done with it for another 5 years.
Did I make a good, bad, or neutral choice?
I know spending money is always bad but if it cures my FoMo and can handle stuff like TES6 on playable settings then I think it was worth it to me
Should have checked in with you guys before entering my card info but wanted to check in after the fact to get a gut check
>>
>>109523469
The plan for AMD is to upgrade threadripper to DDR6 before consumer boards.

>>
>>109523442

$410 on amazon. Free shipping with prime but after taxes it was like $450 I think.
It was between that and the 9060 for me but the 9060 was an extra $50 and I didn't think the extra VRAM was worth it vs the actual game performance. May have been a mistake but if so I'd rather just upgrade to a 16GB card when that time comes (which I doubt will be TES6 desu so not my problem really)
>>
>>109523442
Intel will probably have DDR6 support first since they usually have a new socket every other year, for AMD they'll release zen7 on AM5 and we'll have to wait for zen8 and am6 to get DDR6 support.
>>
>>109523835
next intel socket will be supported for 3 generations starting with nova lake early 2027

most likely, if not sooner
>>
>>109523877
Yes, dimms are dead.
>>
>>109523884
>>109523894
it would be amazing to get ddr5 on camm because ddr5 sucks for AI, the bandwidth is too narrow, it gets too hot and the so-dimm technology is outdated and performs bad, part of me thinks that they need to improve ddr5 to run AI now because they can't wait until 2030 for ddr6
>>
>>109523904
DDR6 will be out for datacenters at the latest in 2028 it's only consumers that have to wait. Well probably see DDR6 on 2027 in datacenters first with Epyc and Xeon supporting it.
>>
>Servers go with CAMM2 or HBM instead.
>DDR6 finds the server market less fruitful than thought.
>Intel releases a DDR6 socket sooner than AMD.
>AMD get caught with their dicks in their hands because they pledged to support AM5 for 600 years.

I would not be surprised if AMD have some sort of plan for what happens if this notoriously hard to predict memory market does not work out as predicted.
>>
>>109523948
Their plan is simple, if DDR6 is too expensive they'll just keep releasing CPUs for AM5. If DDR6 is out and "affordable" then they move on to AM6.
