Get a 5600 or better cpu and then maybe upgrade the gpu if needed. A 5700 or better will help with compiling/productivity (more cores/threads). Better gpu can help with games/ai stuff (7600xt is cheapest 16gb amd but 9060xt is better). I don't know how good/bad amd is for ai stuff but nvidia tends to be better for productivity related tasks. You might also need to upgrade the psu. The other stuff is fine.

Is there are significant disparity in text token generation speed between the 9070 XT and 5070 Ti? I'm guessing 10% or so difference when comparing between Q4 and NVFP4.
>>
>>109574130
I'd look at a prebuilt at this point, your pc is well balanced, if you get a better CPU you're going to be pushing your GPU to its limits if it isn't there already. ryzen 5000 is also only one gen up from where you are so you're going to get a 20% performance uplift generally unless you get an x3d chip. I guess you can go up to a RTX 5060, RX 9060, 3070, 6800, 4060ti etc. on this cpu without it being a complete waste of money.
>>
>>109574340
Closer to about 40% advantage to 5070 Ti.
9070 XT is GDDR6 with a 640 GB/s~ Bandwidth.
5070 Ti is GDDR7 with 896 GB/s.

Which is about 40% more bandwidth, and correlates to 35-40% faster token generation.

Running Linux I bought a Gigabyte motherboard since they have the most firmware files on LVFS and from there I assumed they have the best support: https://fwupd.org/lvfs/search?value=gigabyte

I learned recently that you need patched kernel modules that don't work half the time just to get some of the sensors working like for your fan's RPM: https://github.com/frankcrawford/it87

This is annoying. I won't be buying this brand anymore. Is Asus better? They seem to make the best hardware.

>>

ASUS might make the best hardware at the very top
talking like $600+ boards
idk

but for normal people ASUS will penny pinch you to death by cutting down aggressively on the VRMs, removing BIOS options, removing sensors, etc
the other brands give you more value at the same price point
doesn't mean all low-to-mid range ASUS boards are bad (i have one) but something to be aware of

and if you're looking for linux support none of them care, it's nowhere near as bad as it was say 20 years ago but there's no way to know if everything will work out of the box without testing the board yourself

b550 recommendations around or under $150? I'm going to be replacing a b550 steel legend so everything I'm looking at seems quite pared down. But as long as my NVME+3 SATA drives work without stealing lanes from the GPU I'll be happy.

3DMark stress tests (20 consecutive benchmark runs) managed to expose unstable DDR5 timings missed by commonly recommended CPU or DRAM stress tests.
tCCD_s, tCCD_l, tRDRD_sg needed to be loosened by 2 ticks.
These extended 3D render runs stress the IMC over the PCIe lane by creating bank-switching loads other synthetic tests don't create (cross-bus traffic).
Set Windows power plan to [High performance] before you run these tests.
[Balanced] power plan doesn't appear to run the system hard enough to create these conditions.

This test condition can also expose edge cases related to unstable CPU undervolts (constantly runs tests @ maximum single-threaded boost clock).
It took a while to realize the issue with my setting was the memory timings vs. the undervolt.

Before you blame Afterburner, Adrenaline, or silicon lottery for your unstable "GPU OC", make sure your CPU & memory tuning is stable.
>>
>>109576032
tras also matters on ryzen despite buildzoid saying otherwise. too high is too slow, too low is also slow. its the minimum number of clock cycles a memory row must stay open (active) before a precharge command can close it and closing it too early will miss crucial data and leaving too long will suspend the operation for the next refresh cycle.
>>
>>109576054
tRAS on DDR4 was definitely a meme, at least.
>>
>>109576104
on single rank memory it doesn't matter as much but for dual rank it does make a difference as theres more banks opening and closing.
>>
>>109576009
Okay, that's nice.
Now post the PT results.
>>
>>109576032
sounds like fun
might buy 3dmark one day
or might keep living in ignorance
>tCCD_s, tCCD_l, tRDRD_sg needed to be loosened by 2 ticks
tCCD timings don't exist as hardware registers on intel CPUs
so if you have RDRDdg set manually already all you really did was increase RDRDsg by two ticks
which is sensible, you can probably get the old setting stable by shoving more voltage into the sticks
>>109576141
AFAIK no DDR4 die cares about tRAS
micron cares about tRC, and on intel tRC=tRAS+tRP, so you need to work backwards and set tRAS=min_stable_tRC-tRP
>>
>>109575873

I built a ridiculous cooling setup just to realize that my case fans don't react to CPU or GPU temperatures, but the "system temperature" which is constantly 30 degrees. I went to the UEFI to change the fans to follow the CPU temperature and it made the CPU hotter? All these fans are connected to a fan hub in the back which connects into a single PWM header. Is this wrong? My best guess is that the top ones going too fast makes too much turbulence. What do?
>>
>>109576462
Have you tried measuring before/after for both idle and load temp? Or is this just vibe
>>
When attaching the mobo to the case, and then the CPU cooler, and then GPU to the mobo, is it better to keep the case upright or on its side?
>>
>>109576462
Those top fans are absolutely unnecessary. And depending on their speed, might just be feeding the hot exhaust right back into the CPU.
>>
>>109576462
your top fans are intake and exhaust when it should be double exhaust. the gpu air also has nowhere to go other than to the cpu.

I don't know if your workload would benefit from Nvidia, but those shits are getting expensive - maybe look at a used 4060 Ti 16GB if so. I would also consider upgrading the PSU.

I've done it twice. Once it leaked and killed my machine. Once it operated fine without any problems for a much longer length of time. I have a pretty old rig (5600x 3060TI) that i still use to play on medium (roughly) @1440p, 1080p if the game is too demanding.
Anyhow this is the second time i see this "resolution quality" bar.
Whats that supposed to do? control how much "upscaling" the card has to do? so at 60% is rendering at 60% of 1440p then upscaling?

each dlss preset has a fixed value for scaling the internal resolution relative to the output resolution. the 60% value aligns with dlss balanced preset when rounded up.
>>so at 60% is rendering at 60% of 1440p then upscaling?
in theory, yes, that's a (2560*0.6)x(1440*0.6) internal resolution.
but i wouldn't be too sure with applying a custom resolution scale; i believe it just rounds to the closest preset. I'd personally use the nvidia app (or some other program) to force it reliably instead, then check it's applied usings nvidia's frameview for sanity sake.

NTA but they do matter. My 3060 Ti unironically triggered PSU protection circuits on a 660W PSU despite being a 200W card. Yeah it was a pretty old PSU so maybe newer ones are designed to have much looser protections, but those constant power excursions do damage. They shouldn't claim it's a 200W card when it does crazy high transient spikes.

Like, at least let me know what to expect. If the card spikes to 600W or some shit, tell me about it.

>>109580652
If the 3090 Ti FE buyer was willing to take his chance with a less safer power interface, he needed to install the card in a larger case or use a 90° cable.

2GB RAM
GeForce 6800 Ultra or Radeon X800 XT PE.

>Top 10 things you need to know bout DooM 3!

1. 6800 is a tad faster than X800 cards. Both run it in full glory

2. The game has four render paths: NV10, NV20, R200, and ARB2. All paths look awesome, even down to a g4mx, but the ARB2 path is the "full package," and is used for the R300+ and Geforce FX+ cards. It does all it's fancy **** in one pass.

3. PCI Express enhances NOTHING.

4. The difference between a 128mb and 256mb card is that the former uses compressed textures whereas the latter only compresses diffuse and specualr maps. In another words, no big deal. However, a 500mb card is needed to run the game in Ultra Quality mode.

5. 512MB is the ideal system total memory. 384 is required, 1GB is nice, but the difference is negligible.

Gree/ting/s.
I'm thinking of upgrading the following:
CPU: [Intel Core i3-7100 @ 3.90GHz] to [AMD Ryzen 5 5500 @ 3.6GHz]
Motherboard: [Gigabyte H110M-DS2-CF] to [Asus Rog Strix B550-F]
GPU: [Nvidia Quadro K2000D 2GB] to [GeForce RTX 3050 8GB]

Also:
-Planning to get a [Be Quiet Pure Power 13M 650W Full Modular 80 Plus Gold] PSU
-RAM is 16GB, should be enough.
-The case is pic related but with a DVD drive. I can't find the model name, but it's listed as a mini tower (36x36x17cm).

-Are there going to be any hardware conflicts or incompatibilities?
-Any additional expenses I'll have to keep in mind, such as cooling?
-I'm planning to use it for gaming among other things, but I don't expect insane results, just being able to play the average modern Souls-like smoothly.
-Is the CPU significantly inferior to the options in the OP? They all cost about 80 eurodollars more for me.
-I can find an [ASRock ARC B580 12GB Challenger OC] for 50 eurodollars more than the 3050, is it worth it? I don't know how dependable the maker is.
-Is it advisable to replace the tower, too? It feels like that's where the Ship of Theseus threshold will be crossed.

Thanks for any info or suggestions. I'm new to this, so some of my choices might be completely off the mark.

(Greece btw)

Good luck if these Souls-like are made on UE5, the 3050 runs slower than a 2060 6GB on average.

Considering my current ancient setup, any of those options would be a massive upgrade anyway, but apparently the 5500 can handle some titles I'm interested in (Tainted Grail and Mortal Shell 2 for example), so if the budget is tight I might choose that. Then again, future-proofing is something to keep in mind too, so I'll have to think about it. Thanks again, anon.

It is, he's just mad because like most discussions on /g/ it's about people throwing opinions at each other that they decided to get married to 6 months ago.

5070 Tis have been going up in price because as the "cheaper" option to a 5080 with the same amount of VRAM the local model people have been gravitating to them. If you can pay nearly the same within the ballpark of $250+/- for a 5080 there's no reason not to other than waiting for a 5080S which will probably be scalped to hell due to having 24GB of VRAM.

Remember when Microsoft contracted Nvidia to make Xbox'x GPU?

Xbox essentially shipped with a Pentium 3 733 MHz, 64MB DDR, a (slightly customized) Geforce 3, and an 8GB HDD for $299. A GeForce 3 was a pretty high-end card for 2001 too, a GeForce 2 and Directx 7 were really the standards still in 2001. Xbox system has Direct X 8.1, shader model 1.1, vertex shader 1.1 and two Vertex Shader units, while the Geforce 3's only had one. The Xbox GPU was quite powerful.

It's so funny that Halo was used to advertise the NVIDIA GeForce 2 GTS and then that graphics card literally couldn't run Halo. Most GPUs were intentionally gimped out of Shader Model 2.0 and couldn't play Halo PC with specular highlights and bumpmapping. Gearbox had to potato-ify or remove many of the graphical effects when they ported the game to PC. Gearbox needed to write a fixed function renderer to support older 3D cards. Shaders had to be toned down for DX8 back then, the PC DirectX lacked a ton of calls present on the Og Xbox's DirectX.

The fact that the DOOM 3 port and Morrowind worked as well as it did on the original Xbox is a testament to how powerful it was, as many people were upgrading their pcs just to play it, and the port was running on a console from 2001 if I remember correctly.

Now devs have Ryzen, 9070 XT, 5070 Ti, 5080, 5090 to develop with and can only make UE5 jank lol

bit the bullet and ordered a bunch of pc parts to upgrade, basically a whole new PC but I'm going to transfer my SSDs over from the existing one.
since I'm running linux, will I be gtg with the new CPU or will I have to do a fresh install of the OS? or even if I don't *have* to, is it still recommended? I'm running Linux Mint fwiw and I heard it's not the best for gaming, so this would be my chance to switch to something else.
>>
>>109583372
I do a fresh install of the OS if it's a new CPU or motherboard. The reason is that the drivers might be different from your old parts vs your new CPU/motherboard. The only time I don't reinstall the OS is if I'm changing RAM or any of the PCIE cards, like GPU, network card, sound card etc.

CachyOS is fine and I think it's just as good (if not better) than Bazzite. If you are on Mint, you can pair CachyOS with KDE or Xfce for a similar feel.

Mint is fine if you're not running cutting edge hardware. But Arch based is measurably better for newer stuff. And as far as Arch based distros go, cachy holds your hand fairly well.

I'm currently running what's in the link above, plus a 1070 that's earned it's keep but has probably hit retirement age

question - does a 9070XT make sense as a replacement if it's in my price range?
I could get a 5070 for around the same price (~$1100 AUD) but the 5070 Ti is another $500, and considering the rest of the computer it would probably be wasted.
Later on I might upgrade the rest but I'm not sure ddr4 ram or the i5 would be an issue yet
