I've gotten a couple of thinkpad t14 gen 3 cheap, but they've got some white spots on the screen. If I switch to dark mode they're pretty much not noticeable, but at once there's a white background they get visible. So obviously not dead pixels. Anyone knows what it is? Is it damage to the screen or something else? Haven't really seen it before.
>>
>>109575248
it's damage to the screen, yeah. one of my Thinkpads had that when I bought it too, I was planning on changing the panel when I bought it anyway and after the panel swap they were gone. I kept that damaged one as a spare just in case
>>
Should I buy a second T480? It's cheap, and has more SSD space than mine.

Saved these 3 from e-waste but they can't run Windows 11 officially, do I just bypass it on there or just put Ubuntu or Mint on and sell them as a much better Chromebook? I wanna clean these up real nice with another so-dimm and sell them locally so they can live on.

I’d probably just use windows 10 iot ltsc since it has security updates until 2032. Not entirely legal but buyers probably don’t care either way.

That's kinda based, I wanted an OS that wouldn't force the buyer to do anything like update which may fuck up the hacktivation or whatever, just browse and do basic everyday shit, thanks.

They're each a T470 with the older skylake i5-6200U but with the backlit keyboard and 1080p screen, I got em cheap, and I figured maybe $22-$25 per 8GB dimm for each of them to bring them to dual channel 16GB would be worth a clean up and install of Windows or Linux if I can sell them for maybe $150, I care more about keeping these out of the recycler or landfill than I do the money.

>>
>>109578383
yeah same issue as here >>109575248
my quick fix was just enabling dark mode, then they pretty much turn invisible
if I had to guess it's because of damage to the panel from the backside of the screen or something, I can't really explain how it's because of the keyboard touching it
can't really complain because I paid very little for them, but it's more annoying than other faults I've found. worn keyboard and a little scratches don't bother me a lot, but stuff on the screen is a lot more bothersome. the keyboard scratches you don't really notice unless there's heavy sunlight on the screen
>>
>>109575248
i've seen that before. it's likely one of the layers within the display panel. there are thin layers of substrate which filter the light source. they can get be damaged with heat. in the situation with spots, exposure to a concentrated heat source could have been the reason. typically it is not repairable, however with the proper equipment and determination anything is repairable.
>>
>>109578630
I'm honestly thinking it's age and the conditions so it just happens, because my thinkpad has like no scuffs on the lid where someone would've been mean to it yet my other 1080P T470 is perfect, and then my main T470 IPS touch that encourages people poking the fucking screen has none of that either.
>>
>>109578674
Maybe, I don't know the history of these thinkpads but otherwise they don't seem that worn and the batteries on them aren't that bad. I think the worst one was 80 percent battery health. The keys are a bit worn but nothing major. Though I managed to make it less noticeable with dark mode so it probably doesn't matter that much, but I hope it doesn't get worse.

I was in shock too when my mom got a T14G5 to replace her work T480s, yeah the notch is a little strange, but it mogs my beloved T470 in every way, the speed, the 1920x1200 screen, the two RAM slots, it's thinner, etc.

It's like Lenovo is turning into Apple where they made an era of stuff people didn't like, but then if someone asked me "Anon what's the best MacBook Pro?" I'd have to tell them a brand new one because the best ones are being made right now.
>>
Is this X280 any good?
>>
>>109581416
I haven't had it drift yet but I've only had it for a few days. Maybe that's one piece of technology they did lose.

>>109581473
Yeah. Mine has a 3k screen too, it's fucking nice.
The notch is very autistic (in a bad way) but hey at least they didn't actually make a notch in the screen itself (unlike fucking macbooks ahahahahahahaha).
They did however ROUND MY FUCKING SCREEN, which is absolutely insane on a laptop. I only notice it occasionally so I will learn to live with it but I cannot fathom the fucking decision for this. Pic related is a simulation in gimp at 400% scale - left is a screenshot of what my window manager is actually displaying, right is a recreation of what I see due to the bezel going OVER the LCD. Stunningly inane design.
But oh well I can live with it.

>Is this X280 any good?
That really depends on what you consider good. Personally I like durability, longevity and repairability.
>16GB of soldered RAM
Right now 16GB is average for smooth W11 operation. However it's completely soldered to the system board and has no open slots for upgrades. Running soldered DDR4 when 6 is around the corner isn't wise. It has one primary M.2 slot, which isn't as bad as soldered storage and would run fairly decently. If you need more storage in the future it would could be thoroughly extended as long as the key matches. You'd get 8th-generation (and select 7th-generation) Intel Core processors. As for the CPU, it's mid.

I'd suggest going with a P or T series. Even a ThinkPad P1 Gen 1 is going to have 8th gen CPU, two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots and two M.2 2280 slots for a fraction of the cost.

God that's annoying, I try not to think about much screen real estate is being cut off at the corners on my Galaxy S26 because it would just piss me off on something that I just do basic shit with, but on my computer than I am at most of the time, that display or laptop is going out the fucking window.

It's just Lelnovo copying Apple again because they think it will gain customers, it's as if they never learned 11+ years after Rossmann made a bunch of autistic videos explaining that their chinky black durable brick shaped laptops that run windows could never in a million fucking years win over who wants a mac, especially when you consider Thinkpads themselves are not cheap devices, so if someone has the money for a new Thinkpad, they can afford a brand new MacBook air stop copying the design language, make the best thinkpads you can in a way that Apple could never could.
>>
>>109581890
On a phone at least you don't have square UI with square window borders in the corners.
Nor on macs for that matter. That notch and those corners are horrendous and I hate touching macOS, but at least the way the titlebar works and the way window corners are displayed are specifically made to work around those issues. Unlike on a thinkpad that at best will be running stock Windows (even discounting autistic TWM users like myself).

>Lelnovo copying Apple
I'm not sure, the rounding is absolutely tiny compared to those massive cut-off corners on macs, and the outer bezel doesn't follow the same curve either. I looked it up and apparently it's only a think specifically the 3k screen (at least on the gen5), which sounds like they might have fucked up that screen specifically for no reason. Maybe they got a good OEM deal on a rounded panel for some reason?
No idea if newer gens got more rounding or not, that would indicate whether it was an intentional design choice or just random retardation from their part.

X280 is just a T480s in 12 inch form factor, but ram is fully soldered. Unlike X270/X260/X250 which the base is T450/T460/T470. As someone who owned X280/X395 before and daily driving X270 right now, I suggest you to go for either X270 or X395. X280 is kinda the T490 of X series
>>
>>109583557
>NVME only
>soldered so-dimm
That's tragic how cucked a T490 is, the T470 and T480 were based with not only the RAM slots, but the 2.5 inch bay for whatever the fuck storage you want, 2.5'' SSD, slow ass hard drive if you like em big, an NVME, whatever.
>>
yeah and I was a bit too harsh for X395 before. Indeed X395 footprint sucked ass, way too big for ultraportable. But it's much much easier to get the 16GB version and if you get the FHD IPS one, it's guaranteed 72% NTSC.

Essentially a cheaper T495s, dare I say best bang for bucks small pads right now if you don't care being stuck on 16GB of ram

>>

>selling me the laptop for less than the DIMMs would get them
Thats why its difficult for me to even get on the recyclers for scuffing up a laptop a little when we're lucky theyre even selling a complete unit for probably the same or less than parting it out, John from RDKL made a great video about how wasteful it is when recyclers take out the ram and drive because the fucking laptop itself isn't worth anything and it would cost as much or more to put ram and a drive back in to make it run again then a complete one is worth, he was talking about MacBooks but the same destruction goes on with the thinkpads, I've managed to get a good few T470 with drives and ram for $90-$108, but most listings are no ssd no ram and its still $60-$85, its very unfortunate becsuse I tried to list my broken keyboard but working toshiba ivy bridge with 16gb ddr3 for $100, nobody bought, but when I took it down and listed the WD SA510 SSD, someone offered me $68 in minutes, and the 16gb ddr3 1600 someone offered me $25 same day, and I sadly ended up taking what is left of it to best buy as e-waste because the entire machine and charger weren't worth anything.

I like the keyboards of the T480s/T490/T14g1-2 era. Relatively low travel but my accuracy on them is as good as on the higher-travel T440-T460. You can choose from a couple of manufacturers with different feels: Sunrex for smooth and quiet, Liteon for firm and clicky, Chicony somewhere in between. As for the exact model, I would say T480s if you prefer a metal chassis or want to coreboot it, T14 G2 (or G1 AMD) if Skylake is too slow for you.

Anons my t460 doesn't charge anymore. Not sure if it's the port or the charging cable. I plug the fucking thing and nothing happens.
Should I bother fixing it or should I just cannibalize it and move on
>>
>>109592165
It is possible your AC adapter, which is a power supply in itself has died, I once had that happen on a Toshiba in 2015, cause chinkpads are really good about not having charging port issues, it's literally a charging port mounted in the laptop's case, connected to the board by a wire, so you really can't break it by shoving a charging connector in real hard.
>>
>>109592177
If I wiggle the connector it detects it for a few seconds sometimes. I will try getting a new charger I guess but I'm not spending more than $20 to get it running again
>>
>>109592238
Yeah if a cheap charger doesn't fix it, look into getting a decently priced T480 or go straight to a Gen 2 T or P series laptop with the Zen 3 chip.

It's something about that 1080P IPS screen that makes you love it even though these are older machines at this point, you start to realize why companies like apple despite shit specifications put such an emphasis on having a nice screen, because it just makes the experience so match better when the resolution is high and it's an IPS panel.

>my T470 lives off the wall but I think it still deserves its own bag to carry its adapter so I can just grab the bag and go when I need a laptop
I mean my T480 usually sits at home too. I got no real need for a bag/sleeve but then again: It's also a nice dust protection and when the need arises I just can grab it and know everything's inside so I don't have to search for an AC adapter or a 12v USB-PD adapter or whatever.

I used this sucker with dozens of open tabs, two external screens, ran fucking photoshop (CS6) on it. Trust me, after that experience every computer now feels like a racecar. So let people talk shit, T470 with fat memory is more than good enough as long as we're not talking about heavy shit like video editing etc.

Well what's funny is I had a Broadwell 5350u Macbook air that I had to buy because my sister's died out of nowhere and I had to drive swap recover everything, but then I had this stupid macbook air, found out T series had been based ultrabooks for a while, sold the air to get a T470 and have never been happier.

Basically I got back into business laptops for the first time in 11 years because apple sucks.

Me neither man. I just opened it up, gave it a good clean, did the paste and closed it up again. Then forgot about it for a couple of days and ran the test. Ran it twice because I was suprised about those numbers myself.
Perhaps it's just because the T480 is one cool motherfuckin' computer?^^

I'm pretty sad lads,

Pretty sure my T14s gen1 AMD which got me through my PhD is fully dead. I was alllowed to pick my laptop back when I started it and was like if I am going to have 1 laptop to get me through a degree it's probably going to be a ThinkPad. I spilled tea on it back in the final weeks of my thesis writing and slowly the keyboard started to die.

I tried replacing the keyboard but now no longer turns on tried everything I can which my very limited skill set so I think it's fucked. It's pretty sad to see it go to be honest i spent so much time on that thing.

Thinking about looking for a replacement, I only have a windows work laptop. I mostly used linux through the PhD and it's been a little while i do miss it I am pretty sure I've forgotten most of what I used to know.

I am thinking of starting to hunt around for a t14 gen2.

Dear /g/,

Should I drop €280 on a refurbed T14 Gen 1 AMD in good condition with 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD and 1 year warranty? (That's around €100 below the average price in my country if we exclude randos on eBay with cooties and no chamber of commerce registration.)

I already have two newer pads that will last me another 5+ years. This is just a side project to see if I can salvage another 8 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD from my dead T495. If that doesn't work out, I might spend another €150 on new components.
Use case is distrohopping, anime and retro/emulated/indie games, sometimes on battery, but most of the time on charger with one or two external monitors. (This thing apparently doesn't have Thunderbolt 3, but neither did my T495 and that could power my two 1440p monitors just fine.)

Is this still a normal hobby purchase or am I losing it?
>>
>>109599578

Yes Anon, either use it as a Linux laptop or send it to the eBay auction for someone who will use it, it's the perfect time to sell a classical Sandy Bridge thinkpad because social media has got people acting retarded and are willing to pay as much or more for an X220/T420/T520 than a 15w newer thinkpad that smokes it because it has the blue enter key.

Libreboot it, install Gentoo to it, wipe your ass on it, and sell it. Don't forget to wipe your ass on it.

Option 1: apply a lot of pressure from both sides and try to not break the board
Option 2: get sacrificial screwdrivers, clean their tips with 99% isopropyl alcohol, same with the screw drives (that little hole where you put in the screwdriver), wait for them to dry out a little, apply a very small smudge of superglue in the screw drive then insert your screwdriver with a bit of force to make sure it stays stable while the superglue solidifies, then unscrew while maintaining pressure to not snap the plastic; you could save the screwdrivers and clean them for later, but I usually buy ultra cheapo ones in packs of x50 just for such events and throw them away.

There is the option 3 to migweld the screw head completely to an L-shaped stick, but I doubt that you're a welder.

>>
>>109610213
Latitudes are kinda based sometimes, I remember my E6400 FN and left arrow would make the screen brightness auto adjust with a light sensor on the lid, which I don't even think its thinkpad competitor T400 had, you could even get a backlit keyboard in the Latitude E6400 and the T400 didn't, took lenovo some time to get on the ball with that.
>>
>>109610249
Also the Latitude E6400 will burn your eyes out with 297 nits when you crank it, T470 that came out 9 years later? 220 nits.

They're both special to me though
>>
>>109610249
5400 is kinda weird generation where the entire lineup (7300/7400/5300/5400) absolutely mogged the shit out of thinkpad counterparts (T490/T490s/X390). It was kinda impressed how dell manage to make a 13 inch ultrabook (7300) smaller than X390 with not just one but 2 sodimm slots. I daily drove it for almost 2 years till late 2025.

I don't recommend modern latitude tho, anything from 5420 onwards are garbage. Even HP Elitebooks are better.

If the 2.5" bay had a beefy cooler for the SSDs and a way to put two of them in, without cucked interfaces like the T480, it would be defensible, but as is I prefer an m.2 slot and going nvme only. 2.5" bays are just wasted space otherwise. If you want big slow storage, just put it in a NAS.
>>
>>109610279
The Latitude 5420 I was issued by my employer hasn't had any hardware issues in 5 years. The touchpad and keyboard aren't particularly nice, but I use it in a dock anyway. Yes anon the 5420's are pretty good. I think a lot more of them hit corporate america so they can be had for pretty cheap here and I like them, mine tends to run a lot cooler than my T14's. They can take 60wH batteries which gives you a bit more battery than the T series (except the Gen7). You also get two DIMM slots and no soldered ram which is also comfy. These Tiger Lake's are great as they have AV1 decode on hardware so watching youtube and other stuff only loads your CPU 3 or 4% and greatly extends battery life.

Got my W541, swapped parts over from my T540p, re-pasted it and I love it. Just one thing, it still runs fucking hot. Yeah sure I know a quad core Haswell runs hot, but I didn't expect it idle at 70°C.

Is PTM7950 a good idea for a W541? Should I also undervolt the CPU / GPU?

turbo boost: you just cap the max cpu at 99% in either windows power management or linux governor, and it wont go full retard anymore

Kek not him but I wish my chinkpad would go full retard with the turbo like some laptops, it just bounces around maybe 200mhz over the stock and then back to stock, and the turbo is on, it goes to 3.5GHz single core so it's working, it's just a bum turbo lol

Ok good, I thought my T470 was fucking broken, or maybe it needed working batteries to get full speed, but as a workhorse machine I'm glad Lenovo set it up to just be a 15W computer that you can beat the fuck out of all day long because the fan is barely even audible when you're maxing the CPU out, I love it.

You've got a beast Anon, I wouldn't upgrade to anything less than an 8 core ryzen if you are looking to spend money (T480 is outdated quad core even though it's a good laptop), and I wouldn't even spend anything at all unless your Haswell laptop broke or became unusable, I think you should max that T440p out to 16GB RAM and keep sending it.

I use one on the right and it's still fine at handling my daily use if I'm ever away from the desktop.

Most probably. I think I screwed around with a lot of settings to get the 4200m inside the T540p to become a little livelier. And of course I swapped the same SSD over because I'm a lazy and cheap dickhead (but to be fair it's a 1TB Evo 870 and I've got like 4 years of stuff on it that I don't want to sort through).
>what is the powertop status?
Never used powertop, what exactly am I looking for?
Summary: 360.1 wakeups/second, 0.0 GPU ops/seconds, 0.0 VFS ops/sec and 15.2% CPU use

Meanwhile the idle has settled to around 56°C which is still too high for my taste, but as soon as I start Firefox it jumps back to 70°C.

Mine is plugged in and it only seems to operate within 15w it's kinda based because my old Macbook air would just run at 100C all the time when it was doing stuff and that's probably horrible for the chip to be using 25W in the thinnest fucking computer you've ever seen in your life with fuck all for ventilation or a cooling system for that matter, it's no wonder I had one die, Once again god bless Lenovo and their boxy ultrabooks with their heatpipe cooling and holes in the bottom (what a concept).

Kinda crazy how Haslel Thinkpads went from being worst thinkpad due to horrible keyboard and trackpad changes in 2014 to something that guys are paying absurd amounts of money to not only buy, but to then upgrade compared to just buying a quad or even 8 core laptop that's newer and uses less energy, and wouldn't need upgrades to be good enough to use.

Good deal Anon, look for anything with a 14nm processor in it or newer, such as T460 T470, if you can get it reasonably priced, a T480, much older laptops than Intel 14nm ones would do the job when it comes to basic use, but the problem is they're often similarly priced as a 14nm one, so only get something older than a 6th gen Intel if it's significantly cheaper than a T460 and beyond.

Likely e-waste recycling centers, often times that's how they get to eBay, you get some e-cyclers who see a chinkpad that isn't destroyed and think, "hmm, maybe this should live" and they sell it with or without RAM or an SSD for a low price, and then people who want them get them and make a really nice cheap laptop for themselves.

Are the touchscreen thinkpads any good? Planning to use one for drawing. How do they compare to regular tablets?
>>
>>109622172
>How do they compare to regular tablets?
You mean iPad-style tablets or Wacom-style drawing tablets with a screen?

Either way, Thinkpads' touchscreen quality depends on the series and the model. From what I remember, X1 Carbons usually have good touchscreens. The T series has a more mixed track record. My T450's touch panel was pretty decent for its time, but my T495 had a dimmer one with only around 60% sRGB coverage.

Many reviews on notebookcheck.net will list all the possible screen options a given model can have. You can also look up that model's display FRUs (looks like this: 01YN154) on https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/ , paste them into search engine to find sales that list that panel's EDID (looks like this: AUO B140HAN05.7), and then paste the EDID back into a search engine with site:notebookcheck.net to find reviews of other laptops with that screen.
If you're buying used, most sellers won't list the exact screen you're getting, but many models only have one touchscreen option, so it's still worth looking up if that one is any good.

Hai hai hello is asking to be spoonfed allowed? I'll ask away anyways. I'll be going for a foreign semester next year and thought about buying myself a used Thinkpad so I got something to use while there. All I've got is a really old kinda shitty HP Laptop (for reference of how old, its using 8GB ddr3) running Debian/Win10 dual boot and a semi-oldish "Gaming Laptop" (at least it's portable waow). I don't wanna take either abroad, the former because I don't wanna get clowned for using an "old laptop" (it works fine honestly it makes weird noises sometimes but it does the job...) and the latter because it's not actually a good solution for a portable device.. (in hindsight not the smartest buy but alas).
Ok anyways I just wanted to ask a few things, what price range are you usually looking for? where are you looking? And what is libreboot/other bios replacements for? Do you guys do it because of some privacy promise or to get rid of shitty business laptop's BIOS passwords etc? I heard some people dislike the default BIOS because of alleged backdoors but also I think getting rid of it means no more Windows support right? + bios passwords should be resettable in other ways too right? Just wanted to hear you guyses' perspective on it.
>>
>>109631008
If I was going abroad I would buy the cheapest Chromebook I could find so I wouldn't cry when a brown person inevitably stole it. One that was supported by MrChromeBox custom firmware so I could run Linux natively on it and luks encrypt the drive. Closest thing you can get to a "burner" laptop.
>>
>>109631134
This, Chromebooks and $100 Thinkpads are probably the greatest burners ever because you're not gonna be crying should it get stolen or destroyed, I don't know how people buy $2000 laptops to carry around, that's a life ruiner.
>>
>>109631008
>what price range are you usually looking for
Around 200€
>where are you looking
eBay.de
>And what is libreboot/other bios replacements for
>Do you guys do it because of some privacy promise or to get rid of shitty business laptop's BIOS passwords etc
libreboot is for a very specific selection of hardware, the purpose of libreboot was to have as the name implies a libre boot: meaning that your boot environment and bios is 100% inspectable by anyone who has access to the source code and who knows what they're doing in addition to be 100% reproducible for a chain of trust that you can actually trust.
The only other replacement I can think off is coreboot which was also the basis for libreboot if I remember correctly.

What you basically want is something so cheap that you won't cry if it is stolen abroad. But that goes against your wish to be perceived in some kind of normie hierarchy. So my recommendation for you is a MacBook Neo.
>>
>>109631478
>MacBook Neo.
Unironically the correct choice if you want an inexpensive just works laptop that won't look strange, as much as I don't think it matters, a black Thinkpad even if it's brand new right out of the box will always look like an old laptop compared to some silver plastic crap, or Apple's anodized aluminum.
>>
>>109631500
I don't care about how normies percieve me, I'm that W541 retard.
But anon cares, doesn't want to pay too much and seems to be not very knowledgeable about /g/ anyways. The neo is the perfect craptop for him.
>>
>>109631552
It really is, $700 for a really high dpi screen isn't bad despite the Apple Inc-ness of it.
>>
>your wish to be perceived in some kind of normie hierarchy
Technically Idc, I mean i use the shitty HP here and got people make comments about it. But like in a foreign country + I'm already bad at making new friends.. i thought it would be disadvantageous

>>
>>109631008

no wonder aplel is so successful if "people" like this or the average applecuck exist
anyway the neo is currently the only non-retarded purchase you can make from them
chromebooks make sense as a concept but they are ass for what they offer, thats why old notebooks gain a second life here

The GPU is a K1100M with the Kepler microarchitecture which hasn't been supported since the Nvidia 470 drivers and Nouveau doesn't support automatic re-clocking for the K1100M.
Either I have to keep that bitch running full retard 24/7, keep it in power saving 24/7, completely disable the dGPU or switch states manually by modifiying

Shit's hard, And that Prt Scr key that typically lives on the function keys or in the top right corner of the keyboard where it's always fucking lived forever? Put that shit next to the right alt key, that's the perfect place for that.
>>
>>109639082
That shit is ancient, shouldn't cost more than $600.
P15v/16v are made of recycled condoms.
Look for T14G5/G6 T16G3/G4 P16s G2/G3.
Full-size P15/16/17 if you're a masochist.

Xp. There are probably even factory recovery disks on the wayback machine. Get a msata ide adapter off eBay.

>>109639082
Probably last years flagship xps model wholesale on eBay. Core ultra 9 275hx or go home

Ok thank you. Probably gonna go with the t16 since $50 for a bigger screen and battery seems like a no brainer.

>xps
I'll look into it thanks.

Are libreboot'd t480s still the best schizo option on the market?

Hi, what's the successor of T480?
>>
>>109643166
Depending on your level of schizo it could also be T440p or T400

>>109643786
T14 gen 7 if you're rich, T14 gen 1-2 or L14 gen 2-4 (they all have their pros and cons) if you're poor

thanks fren

T490 or T420, then there are T14s

which would you recommend?

elaborate, how does it compare to my T14 G2A

Not sure how well I did, but I wanted a replacement to my x230t with Ryzen, and they seem to be a bit hard to find in the States.

I hope L isn't a flimsy thing. But my x230t was $100 in 2017. The market really is different.
>>
>>109646423
>The market really is different.
It really is, I remember paying like $120 for a 6yo business laptop in 2014, and now if you're fucking lucky to find a Thinkpad from 9 years ago that's complete it's over $100, $250-$300 for a thinkpad from 5 years ago
>>
>>109646341
They have the same AMD CPUs as T14G2 but can take more memory (64 vs 48 GB). Also they fit some less known niches:
>L14 gen 2
Last one with the boxy untapered case and the thick (in depth) screen bezel of older T/X models, so it looks like a T480 if you're into that, and is less prone to keyboard scratches on the screen
>L14 gen 3-4
Has a 63 Wh battery option, 1.25x as much as T14G2 and lasting about as long as a T480 with 72 Wh

>>109614542
Bro if you are going to upgrade at least get more than 8gb of fucking ram Jesus. Also don't even consider buying another laptop if the T isn't followed by a 1. Better yet make that a 15 because fuck I miss my fucking numpad. At least Get some fucking Intel iris in this bitch man fuck are you doing still using UHD?
>>
>>109646816
Kek dude is probably only struggling solely due to the 8GB, my T470 is a dual core piece of shit it's not slowing down due to 32GB, it's the most important spec these days, doesn't matter how good your CPU is, you run out of ram you're done.
>>
>>109646856
Ong bro ram, SSD, display build quality, these make or break just basically using the damn thing. Most people's bottleneck is NOT CPU or GPU. Ironically enough the people here play the most optimized old ass games probably less than 1gb of disk space needed. And you hear them talking about "my HDD" and posting shit like this.

Then there's the:
>Should I buy the laptop made 11 or 10 years ago? I want to upgrade. Nigga...
>>
>>109646995
>Should I buy the laptop made 11 or 10 years ago? I want to upgrade. Nigga...
Kek that's my favorite fallacy of all, guys will go out and buy some old ass T440P, do quad core max out the RAM to a whopping 16GB with muh upgradable slots, do SSD, do 1080P IPS screen, the T450 trackpad will real buttons, on and on and on, it's like "bro, how much are you gonna spend on this old ass laptop?, just get a newer T14 that's gonna have all that shit and go faster and cost less.
>>
>>109646995
Not sure about that my x1 yoga struggles to do dolphin emulator at 1080p. Also the HDMI port is 1.4b so when I hook it up to a TV it looks like shit making me use my type C port instead. I wish they would have had the ryzen as an option which had a way better APU
>>
>>109647040
Bro I wish to fucking god I could've taken the fucking amd version of my t14 but the fuckers in the eu charge what they are missing from their wallets.
>>
>>109647015
Still, even if you are buying refurbished, you are gambling display, wear and battery health. But if you are buying a fucking 10 year old laptop that's just certain.
>>
>>109643166
>>109644078
Anything post-core2duo is a meme with regards to muh privacy.
>>
>>109614972
how do you fix damage like this? just replace the case? bend it back and seal it with superglue?
>>
>>109647274
True, I'm used to buying thinkpads with dead batteries (get em cheaper) but if you're looking for a good to go, take with you because the battery's good, the newer the laptop the better, old thinkpad just isn't worth it as a portable due to the cost and questionable quality of chink batteries in the chinkpad
>>
>>109647491
Idk if the problem is really the batteries themselves or the chinky origin (since the entire laptop is basically manufactured in china), chinks enforce quality standards if the product fits their price margin.but It can also be said that most people have no clue how to take care of their machines. They clog it with shit and dust from using it on the bed, eating on it etc they leave it 100% charging, they let it get hot which wears it faster. And wonder why shit is failing.
>>
>>109647543
>>109647491
Also old ThinkPads aren't worth it because...
They are fucking old

Yeah a Nokia has good build quality and all that, but in 2026 you need a smartphone to get shit done unfortunately.

But then again it depends on your use case. If you just browse and do office shit it's probably more than fine compared to the cheap consumer garbage.

But (again) if you are going to have a laptop that you use CONSTANTLY and do various shit with it, (basically not be a fucking casual) then your question becomes not whether to get the 325 or 300 laptop but
>What am I missing from not buying the 500 dollar laptop? Will I come to regret the cheaper option later by finding out it's quirks don't suit me?

Basically the money you save now you pay in frustration every time something doesn't work. And it stacks with time.

>>109647634
It's true, the low performance per watt of my Kaby Lake 7300U doesn't matter when it's on a wall, but using it as an actual laptop on battery would be painful because you know in your brain you could be using that same 15w of power and getting way more performance than your old ass laptop.

Still love my clapped out, living on the wall thinkpads, but any computer I used on battery would be as close to new as possible if not a new laptop, even if it's consoomer shit, there's a reason Intel Celery laptops from the store exist, it's a new laptop that you can whip out and have good battery life and a 6W processor, and a $100 thinkpad on Ebay just can't do that out of the box even if it is more powerful.

>Running soldered DDR4 when 6 is around the corner isn't wise.
nta, but do you have recommendation for thinkpad with DDR5?
>>
>>109646995
In my experience for normal media consumption and productivity work, it's gpu and display that go hand in hand and can kill a laptop before its time. Integrated graphics are, historically, marginal already. New video codecs/compression that your old igpu doesn't support, coupled with an aging display that has degraded at least 20% from its originally designed brightness by the time it gets to you 5+ years later....takes some of the fun out of it.

I'd keep using my T61 if I could watch YouTube in something better than 360p without a fusion reaction taking place inside the shell. The AFFS panel is beautiful, but I don't want to watch only mpeg-2 Star Trek TNG reruns. It would be 100% ewaste with a horribly washed out TN panel.
