Meta now uses nts to authenticate securely with ntp. Most distributions are using systemd's timesync, which is literally a 1980s insecure protocol with no nts. If you are on Ubuntu 26.04 (fresh install, not upgrade), nts is already the default because it uses chrony with their own nts time servers. Pop also has their own time servers supporting nts too. For all other distributions you should be using Cloudflare, Meta or another provider with nts...not some random insecure servers.

Google Public NTP and time.aws.com are insecure. The NTP Pool Project only has insecure ntp too (vast majority of distributions like Debian and Linux Mint are still relying on this).

Hello anons, here's an update

I first installed Arch on the laptop and I really enjoyed it, but I must admit I was overwhelmed at first. I used Arch with KDE Plasma and thought it was okay, but I wanted to explore other distros. I tried Mİnt, didn't quite like it and eventually settled on CachyOS with XFCE.
Here's my current setup - any suggestions, tips? I want to add more plugins or widgets. Only covered the necessary apps right now; LibraOffice, Gimp and Krita.

Really new to Linux but enjoying it a lot. My computer is really faster and although the file storage and terminal was scary at first, I think I am getting the hang of it now.

My distro is now running properly on my laptop and can rebuild itself on the fly without issues: >>110038890

Next thing I am wondering is the chicken and the egg problem with this, should I keep the original bootstrap process intact or should I ditch it and start building the distro's new base images using the distro itself? I'm leaning on keeping the original bootstrap so that I can always reproduce the initial build and the bootstrap wouldn't have a circular dependency on its own output. I read a bit and I see many distros have lost their original boostrap, it's called "lift off" I guess so they depend on their output to produce the output, which is wild but I guess it makes the build faster and more isolated/stable.

considering he's going for a more lightweight setup, coupled with the thunderbird picture, it seems like he's asking for something lighter to replace thunderbird with.

this is why i responded with claws mail, since that's similar to my reasons. i used to use thunderbird, but nowadays it's just overkill for my purposes. actually i used it as far back as it being part of mozilla ("if you know you know" as they say), actually you can still do that today if you want to use seamonkey...
in any case, claws mail gives you that familiar old outlook express/old thunderbird-like interface while being really lightweight. as in it has optional support for html mail (i don't care for html mail so i don't compile it in) along with support for a few different html engines if you do need that.

there are even lighter options, like some tui clients, but i don't feel the need to go that far myself

>>
>>110050160
You skipped 43 and updated directly to 44, I assume. Skipping versions is known to cause issues. If you want to defer updates for over a year but then apply all updates at some point, use the atomic fedora variants. Updates there are stable and recovery from failed updates is either automatic or trivial to handle.

Yep, this is why they invented atomic distros. The base image can be swapped any time and you never have to worry about updates.

if a steam game opens up one of those microsoft runtime installers, does it actually install anything anywhere or just goes through the process without actually doing anything
>>
I really want to make the switch to cachyos but I run a lot of windows apps and I want to learn properly the best way to use them on linux, I know you can just route everything through steam with proton, but that seems clunky
what else can u use to run windows .exes that wouldn't require steam, is setting up wine easy enough?
>>
>>110051900
It installs the VCRedist files into the C:\ of your prefix.
>>
>>110051913
ah ok yeah that makes sense thank you, was worried it would just put random bullshit anywhere else.
>>
>>110050224
I learned this the hard way skipping a major version for a debian (rpi) installation. I have never appreciated Arch updates more.
>>
Have they ever considered just copying Windows & not having things not work?
On Windows, when you plug your laptop into a tv, audio and video work immediately. On Linux, you have to spend 10 minutes troubleshooting with AI to discover there was some weird NVIDIA compatibility error that made audio not work.
Personally, I would just make this functional.
>>
>>110051995
Pretty sure Arch breaks if you leave it too long. It's just harder to say exactly how long that is. At least with Debian you can still achieve an updated system if you don't skip major versions.
>>
>>110052287
If you don't update it for like a month or so you can have keyring issues which stops updates from working properly. Easy fix though, just do "sudo pacman -Sy archlinux-keyring && sudo pacman -Su" as a full update command.
>>
>>110052287
I have some old laptops I've neglected updates on for over a year before and it's not a problem at all.
As anon said, as long as you fix the keyring issue, the update should just werk. Any breakage encountered would be from software changes that would have caused breakage when updating normally anyway.
>>
>>110052287
you have to not update for a good while for it to break cause of that

Thanks, I will try to remember that if I ever decide to run Arch again.

I considered it but I haven't paid for Pro yet. I want to support the developers but I just can't right now; Zorin needs more updating to consider it worthy of a donation (eg update Ubuntu and/or NOT use GNOME).
>>
>>110052838
>muh GNOME
GNOME only sucks because of the defaults and the lack of settings, which is an issue fixed in ZorinOS through extensions. But yes, updating it to match the latest Ubuntu version would make it more usable.
>>
>>110052968
>gnome only sucks if you don't use 3rd party extensions to fix it
cool so gnome sucks
>>
>>110053028
Sort of, but not quite. Every extension is centrally hosted and vetted by the GNOME team. Unlike most browser extensions, for example.
>>

This may be a stupid question but why would you want your screen to tear? No tearing is a major reason why I prefer Wayland to X11. The old days sucked compared to what we have now.
>>

its only for fullscreen applications, games
to reduce input laterncy
kde supports it

I used vanilla gnome for the longest time, and the only thing I downloaded gnome tweaks for was to scale a wallpaper. Idk why they don't have wallpaper scaling. That's pretty much my only complain. Gnome classic looks kinda ugly, but I can see it being useful for people who like using their mouse more.

I'm having this same fucking issue in KDE plasma.
https://www.mail-archive.com/kde-bugs-dist%40kde.org/msg1070505.html

How the actual FUCK hasn't it been fixed yet? This is so annoying.
When hovering over window previews in the panel, half the time it doesn't show where the actual window is on your screen. You have to go through the previews very slowly for it to work properly.

ALSO in between the previews there is an empty space that makes it preview nothing so when moving your mouse through the previews it flickers quickly going between 2 windows.

ALSO when there's too many previews to fit on the screen, the fucking scroll wheel doesn't work on window previews, yet it shows an ugly unnecessary scroll bar?

It's incredible how broken linux is and how they refuse to fix even basic shit.
So many of these tiny bugs I have to find workarounds or just deal with it.

you know how people bitch about gnome refusing to implement certain things or removing features for more minimalism
kde plasma developers are the same way but with bugs, they dont care about it being a buggy mess, they will only work on what they want to work which is more bloat and features nobody asked for
kde plasma will never stop being buggy because nobody wants to fix the bugs
>>

because they don't have to serve consumers, nobody is paying for this shit

>>
>>110060340
Must be why windows is so great and no one even thinks about switching to linux
>>
>>110059766
Odd as well. Fixing old, long-standing bugs is far more satisfying and commendable than introducing a duct-taped-together new function only <10% of users care about.

Maybe it's a generational thing where they need to get dopamine fed. Introduce some sort of point system on github, where one gets increasingly more, the older an issue is that is resolved.

Deprecated doesn't mean broken.
>>
>>110052465
I think the problem is that a "pro" version looks shady, especially for a linux distro
People just need to get into the habit of donating more. Almost everyone who uses linux can probably afford a one-time $20 donation for their favorite distro with zero consequences to their personal finances (excepting the absolute poverty poorfags, obviously if those $20 actually materially affect your life I don't expect to give anything) and I am willing to bet that if everyone actually gave that it would dwarf the current funding available to most distros.
>>
>>110062596
Deprecated means you shouldn't use it for some reason or other.
I don't see any reason not to use X11. It still gets regular security fixes and all.
>>
>>110042452
openbox hasn't had a release since 2015 and it still works just fine.
it's completed software.

my advice is to stop worrying about whether something you're using is actively maintained per-se and instead judge things based on whether they do the job for you or not.

i'm sure people still happily use dwm

I don't know what version, but one of the later 6.x.x kernels support Xbone bluetooth controllers
