Look at this thread...with very few exceptions the images were clearly prompted by people with ZERO imagination, who wouldn't dare step outside of the box.

It's like if someone created a machine that could make any type of food and/or meal imaginable without any need to understand cooking or food science, and when people got ahold of it they told it to make "steak and potatoes" or "a burger, fries and a milk shake" or "really crispy fried chicken".

The only chefs who would be threatened would be the ones who couldn't already make those things well.

Accessing them is cheap and easy, its revolutionary...and the vast majority of what is produced using them is boring AF- totally derivative, trendy, hopelessly unimaginative and predictable and trite.

People also complain that all of the above = "soulless" music but what they miss is that it's not the equipment that makes it that way, its the thoroughly talentless and unimaginative people prompting it to make that dreck.

AI art can't supply imagination or the desire and bravery to create one's own standard that goes outside the lines and breaks rules and doesn't just ape what already exists....that's why it can't create art by itself. But in the hands of a true artist it can absolutely make art.

How would you define the "AI art aesthetic"? What makes these images so easy to clock as AI, even at thumbnail sizes?

it's a great question. I've been thinking about the same thing recently. Beyond the trivial and obvious (fingers, fringes, certain recurring textures, escher nonsence), the thing that immediately pops out to me is the impeccable framing, styling, and shot composition - it's like these things have become so fantastic at composing a subject/background etc that "good framing" alone now makes an image look AI-generated. Not to mention that many people include such adjectives in their prompts (perfect shot, great framing, fantastic composition, etc) or such adjectives are baked into the model tweaking (bing AI, midjourney, etc)

I forget what it was, but I recently saw a well composed photograph, and I immediately thought it was AI-generated (it was not)

Those people didn't give a shit about "art" amd the people who want to make it and get paid, and neither do the people crying about AI and the fate of professional artists and designers.

Threadly reminder that you can feed shitbulls 0.5g per kg of body weight of xylitol and most will drop dead in a few days. Median weight 30kg shitbull, 15g of xylitol. "XL Bully" 90kg "shitbull mix", 45g of xylitol.

Xylitol is a sugar substitute that is safe for humans (and also kitties!) but lethal to dogs. It is widely available in granular form in health-food stores. (IOW, no, you don't need to feed the dog ten packs of chewing gum.) Just mix it into a doggie treat like sausage or cheese balls.

Xylitol has two separate modes of lethality in dogs: first, the chance of putting the dog into a hypoglycemic coma (within hours), second, liver failure (within days). The above doses are the LD50 (meaning half will die from it) to cause liver failure; the hypoglycemic coma dosage is only 20% of the above. There is no antidote, but it can be treated if caught early, and only about half of dogs will die from a LD50 dose (by definition). The two different modes make it very likely to kill a dog with this dose.

Avoid getting caught on video or making it obvious that you're the prime suspect by complaining constantly ahead of time.

Good way to rid your neighborhood of dangerous dogs.

"Prompting" in this context simply means giving that equipment the minimal commands needed to set up rythyms and melodic patterns, etc. that can be made to regenerate and morph into content that is divorced from someone directly choosing each note or element or interval.

Someone with the smarts to know what's worth keeping and building on can do amazing things with gear like that, just like real artists can do cool stuff with AI art creation tools...but most people aren't like that and just choose whatever prompts and output best mimics something they've been conditioned to think is "good", without knowing why.

That's not very creative, but it's the user's fault, not the fact that any particular machine was involved.

A more apt analogy would be that it can make whatever food manual but requires you to input ingredients in a speacific order, and obviously most people don't have the willpower and time for that shit. A single art piece can no longer be taken by itself as just an individuals expression, a gestalt which threads together the larger context that it engages with and that it is defined by aswell that it also defines. It's become more phenomenal oriented, the era of individualistic art is long been gone. I would say this socialization (ironic) begin with mass-produced propaganda art in 20s-40s Soviet Union, pic related Malivich, who was also the last to make a novel individual contribution to art, pioneered its socialization.

AI has/will commoditize image generation for sure -- any monkey can type in a prompt for a "fast car" and shove it in a PPT deck.

But humans are still the only source for human creativity.

As a designers, the way we leverage the tools now is not just to grind out a million more generic Midjourney/OpenAI/Stable Diffusion images and call it a day, but to use those to replace stock images we'd typically spend hours searching for and then hack a million ways until we achieved the desired result.

That means, getting proficient with AI so you can add it into your Illustrator/Photoshop/whatever workflow.
