I fucking hate Anki, I feel like nothing I learn sticks and it becomes a daily chore instead of a fun learning thing.
It's like I have to take hours out of my day to grind out 250 cards only to get another 250 the next day.
It's why I do it for a week, get down to like 70 a day, then forget a day or two, go back and I'm back at 250 and give up.
Honestly it's not very good to learn either, I might "learn" words but honestly I forget them right away. I learn more from seeing words in daily life like college or reading a few times and going "Ah yeah that word, right it means that."

As much as people sing its praises, I don't think Anki is the best for everyone. Flashcards are just rote memorization, which you have to brute force your way through with considerable motivation. If your primary limiting factor in learning is time, then it's quite an efficient method for that. But if you have more time than motivation, it may be better to seek out other methods.

I would recommend getting basic vocab first through one method or another, though given how many reviews you have, you probably have a decent chunk of those. If not, there are some games or courses you could try. For a game, there's Shashingo, where you take photos of things around the city to learn words. This gives some context, as opposed to a blank flashcard. For courses, though I haven't tried it, I think Human Japanese seems promising. Unfortunately, it seems to have changed from a flat fee (it was like $10 or $20 before) to a subscription model that would end up costing more after just a few months of use. It comes bundled in the Satori Reader subscription, which is pretty steep at $9/month, though Satori Reader is great if you want to learn through reading stories with custom human-written explanations for more complicated structures.

Anyway, once you have a bit of vocab to work with, learning some grammar is up next. This is where a dedicated course would shine, as it can teach you vocab and grammar alongside each other. It's hard to learn grammar out of context with words you don't even know yet. I tried Tae Kim's Guide To Grammar, but it's incredibly dry and it would put me to sleep. I much prefer Bunpro, though it is yet another SRS system like Anki, and another $5/month subscription. They do have vocab available as well. For free, Cure Dolly's videos (R.I.P. legend) are great, and she breaks things down in ways that make sense of the underlying logic of the language.

Test things out, find what works for you, and get a starting point to launch from. And then...

Find content that engages you. Options will be slim at first, with limited vocab and grammar. It's not great to leap into stories where you have to look up almost everything. At the start, this will probably be graded readers (there are free ones available online) or comprehensible input videos. Some argue whether you should look up anything at all, or just try to understand what you can while picking up new stuff by context. However, to make the learning more productive, I do recommend grabbing vocab and grammar points from the content and making flashcards out of them (and we're back to Anki, sorry). However, you have the freedom to decide how you want your flashcards formatted (it can be complicated, you may want to find a preset that works for you). There are ways to pull audio and images for your custom cards. The advantage of mining your own cards is that you have context for things through content you experienced.

Ultimately, this still might not work out for you. Maybe the method just won't click with you. Getting the free tools for this set up can be tricky at first, too. There is, shocker, another way to pay for this. Migaku (subscription-based) helps automate the process of snipping content (whether text or video) and exporting into flashcards. You can use their SRS, or send cards into Anki so that you don't lose everything if you stop subbing. A great part of their system is that you can mark words that you know (or have them marked automatically when you reach proficiency through their SRS), and the pages/videos that you visit will give you a comprehension percentage based on the vocab present. This can be a great help in finding content that matches your level so that you can learn new words without being overwhelmed. On the free side of things, you can use a browser-extension dictionary like yomichan, along with asbplayer for videos, and export to Anki that way.

I don't want to have to tell you to pay for everything. With enough motivation, everything can be done free. However, you can get stuck in a spiral of spending more time trying to research ways to learn than you do actually learning. Some of the paid tools are simply easier to get into, easier to use, and can help with decision paralysis. Of course, forget the paid options if you don't have the disposable income for them. Also, I still suck at Japanese, so you really don't have to take my word on any of this. I didn't even factor kanji into my tips here (I just learned them through vocab, which may not work for everybody).

Regardless of what exact methods you choose, though, you will only get good at the things you practice. If you only read, you will only be good at reading. If you only listen, you will only be good at listening. Consider your goals in learning the language when deciding how much time to dedicate to different aspects. Even if the rest of my advice here is junk, I think this is the one part you should take away. You wouldn't want to study for a few years in anticipation of a trip to Japan, only to get there and realize you can't speak a lick of it because you never practiced speaking.
