I've tried looking this up, and all the answers are for specific wars rather than about why formal declarations of war don't happen anymore

Because they're pussies. Same reason that botox midget hasn't proclaimed himself emperor or protector or dictator and instead is wasting money on "elections".
>>16533088UN law made wars illegal, thinking this would put an emd to themtherefore there are no more wars, only>anti-terrorist operations>police actions>special military operations>enforcement of UNSC mandates>support of thirdy allies with "instructors" and "technicians">tribal violence >... crysesetc
>>16533182best example of how cheap virtue signaling is even when made into law.
>>16533088We declare war against abstract concepts all the time.
The economic, social and juriducal implcations of it. Imagine growing up in a western country away from wars and turmoil, and suddenly your weimar utopia institutes martial law, curfews, rations goods and services and forces all able bodied males to enrollment. You would create such a massive backlash that you'd be lucky if your government doesn't get summarily processed by a reactionary junta.
>>16533290I think it succeeded in preventing another major war among UN members directly, with the notable exception of the Iraq-Iran war. Sure casualties have been high in these other conflicts, but nothing has come close to the death and destruction seen in a single theatre of either World War.
>>16533088it makes it significantly easier for international institutions to be used against you, the economic impacts may range from minor to fairly serious in this regard but its catastrophic for your soft power projection and ruinous for your propaganda (especially in the case of states like Russia that constantly play the victim despite launching 9 aggressive wars in the last 20 years)in the case of Russia in particular, the Kremlin has spent decades cultivating a sort of detached political apathy among the population and declaring an offensive war with conscription would 100% cause the population to panic and start rediscovering politics which would be disastrous for the strategy the state has taken to consolidate control of internal political agency. keep in mind the Kremlin has cracked down harder on pro-war hardliners than they have on liberal dissenters, they actively seek to avoid any political agency among the population because realistically they are not prepared or equipped to run the totalitarian police state needed to force their control. its paramount to try to balance the narratives that everything is normal so the people stay half asleep while slowing raising the temperature on the idea that the evil collective West is out to existentially destroy Russian civilization because they put sanctions on the bloodsucking elites that siphon Russian coffers dry and send their kids to live anywhere but shithole Russia
