IMO the biggest flaw of PLC was that the king was elective, yet still served for life. That idea makes little sense when you think about it. If they elect a bad king, they are effectively stuck with him for however many years and can do nothing to remove him short of a civil war. But the king has no real reason to be a good king. He can't be certain that his descendants will inherit the throne (in fact, nobles will do everything in their power to PREVENT that from happening too many times in a row), so he has no reason to care what becomes of the state he's ruling. The best thing he can do, from his perspective, is to try to use PLC's resources to gain or expand his hereditary lands. The nobles will resist him when he tries that, of course. But that begets another problem. Because this behavior was so common, the nobles developed a sort of a knee jerk reaction about the king trying to raise money from them, opposing him even when he happened to have a very good reasons (when PLC was about to be invaded or already being invaded, for example). And IMO: this is what eventually doomed PLC. No one wanted to pay taxes to maintain a strong standing army.Solution: make the king only rule for 4 years, let's say. After that he is forced to abdicate and another election takes place. This would make ruling PLC very unattractive to foreign monarchs, but that's a good thing. They have no reason to care anyway. All or most of rulers would be Polish nobles themselves. This would also enable a Roman-like dictatorial system where it's possible for the king to receive additional rights from the Sejm when it's necessary (probably during a war) to quickly take legislative action without their approval. The term limit would make it so he couldn't keep those rights indefinitely and create an absolute monarchy. But if someone tried and succeeded anyway, then that's not necessarily a bad thing for the state either.
