What has led to the aging of politicians in the modern era? For better or for worse? Should an age limit be introduced so that politicians retire at a certain age?
>>16802222The neoliberal reaction of the 80s in the western world instituted a clique of elites, both in political and economic spheres, who refuse to give up power.
Federal government ballooned in size in the 20th century. The federal income tax was established in the wake of Prohibition (because before it, about a third of the federal government's revenue was from alcohol taxes), and naturally after prohibition was repealed they didn't get rid of the income tax, they expanded it to include a majority of Americans (they promised it would only apply to millionaires). Oh but it was all for the war effort! Gotta do your part for helping our boys win the war!1945, war is over, so time to repeal the income tax right? NOPE. Congress gets a pay raise! And then another! And then another! Who WOULDN'T want to become a career politician? You don't even need any skills!
>>16802222>What has led to the aging of politicians in the modern era?People live longer now. 70 is the new 50
>>16802222Boomers have all the money.
Being a politician used to be a respected position. Not so much nowadays. So many major politicians are aged in from starting in the 70’s and 80’s now Also the pay is just a lot less with comparatively way more work. Thus the abundance of politicians who are old because they already have personal wealth from a career

>Lack of Term limits>Uniparty politics
>>16802222The reality is that America would collapse if gen X, millennials or zoomers assumed power which is why we're down to biden vs trump. Once these two die we might need McConnell or Grassley or Pelosi to do the job. Once all boomers die off it's over, the younger generations don't have any of the real system knowledge to manage things.
>>16803797Even the younger half of the boomers are kind of meh. Really the generation born in the '40s was the last one that could actually run anything or had ideas.
>>16803797die already boomer. if the system continues as it currently is, then it's a good thing we don't know how to manage it. it's shit.
>>16803797>refuse to retire and bring up the next generationcan't wait

>>16802502>The federal income tax was established in the wake of ProhibitionThe 16th amendment, allowing an income tax without apportionment by states, passed Congress in 1909 and was ratified in 1913. It built on decades of earlier work, especially in the 1890s. Nice fanfic, though.
>>16803866I didn't say he was wrong
If I were them, I'd not want to hand over the reigns to the shitty young people we have now.
