why the heck should i purposely cultivate my compassion for the suffering of others? wouldnt that increase my own mental suffering? what if im satisfied with my life. why should i engage in mental gymnastics to see the world as inherently shitty, and worry about le hecking starving niggerinos?

Congratulations, you've articulated the Nietzschean critique of pity and compassion.

One answer is that by empathising with others, we seek to relieve their suffering. By doing so, we encourage an environment of reciprocal altruism, where the sufferer will feel obliged to repay the debt and in turn alleviate the suffering of another sufferer.

Over time, this creates a high trust society where friendship, art, commerce and culture can flourish.

Refusing to be compassionate creates a Hobbesian state of nature where everyone is against each other and life is nasty, brutish and short.

If you believe in nirvana, the world compared to that is absolutely horrible, but you should still not worry about starving negros.
