The actual equivalent would be James I and Peter III but the first fought against the Moors and defended the concept of an united Spain while the latter fought against the French.

You don´t get it. Cataluña was a county and a principality of the Crown of Aragon which is the base for Spain foundation.

They never had such "heroes" because they never fought against Spain or any other related kingdom inside today´s Spain. They were never nationalists. Nationalism was invented in 1900s. And what happens today is due to politicians creating problems to create new solutions for themselves.
