Ancient Israel's primary purpose in history was to act as a speed bump for Empires on their way to conquering some place more important. The Egyptians, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, The Persians, the Greeks and the Romans all owned that tiny scrap of land at one time or another.

You're referring to the Kingdom of Judah here, not Israel. Israel was defunct as a Kingdom by 700BC
