>From beyond the wooded island
>To the river wide and free
>Proudly sail the arrow-breasted
>Ships of Cossack yeomanry.

>On the first is Stenka Razin
>With his princess by his side.
>Drunk, he holds a marriage revel,
>Clasping close his fair young bride

>From behind there comes a murmur:
>"He has left his sword to woo;
>One short night and Stenka Razin
>Has become a woman, too."

>Stenka Razin hears the murmur
>Of his discontented band
>And the lovely Persian princess
>He has circled with his hand.

>His dark brows are drawn together
>As the waves of anger rise,
>And the blood comes rushing swiftly
>To his piercing jet-black eyes.

>"I will give you all you ask for,
>Head and heart and life and hand!"
>And his voice rolls out like thunder
>Out across the distant land.
>>
>And she, lowering her eyes,
>Not alive nor dead is she,
>Silently listens to the cries
>of the Ataman groggy.

>"Volga, Volga, Mother Volga,
>Wide and deep beneath the sun,
>You have ne'er seen such a present
>From the Cossacks of the Don!

>"So that peace may reign for ever
>In this band so free and brave,
>Volga, Volga, Mother Volga,
>Make this lovely girl a grave!"

What ethnicity were Cossacks? Were they Turks, Slavs, something in between?
>>
>Now, with one swift mighty motion
>He has raised his bride on high

>Of the Volga roll and sigh.

>"Dance, you fools, and let's be merry.
>What is this that's in your eyes?
>Let us thunder out a chanty
>To the place where beauty lies!"

>From beyond the wooded island
>To the river wide and free

That's just typical Slav(e) barbarism. Slavniggers are born psychopaths.

Slavs
>>
>>16810461
They was a debate about it: some people with cossack's ancestry claim to be slavic sub-ethnos of South Russia and Ukraine, historians think that they were frontier settlers and bandits, serving the crowns of Russia, PLC and Osman as mercenaries, as diverse group of many nation's people.
They are in-between, I talk without any contempt. Escaped Russian serf and Khazar nomad - they will be cossacks without ethnic division. Eventually, they are formed nation-group on the Wild Field's territory, formed from the people settled here (IMHO)

Also Razin is still recognised as a people's hero, because of his doings. He led the big revolt against the noble's tyranny, but lost and died horryphic but heroic death, dismembered in Moscow.
His history is the hostory of common Russian man, that gave a middle finger about Kremiln's bullshittery ages ago. Cossack means "freeman", so I miss them as that. Now they are just a part of Russia and Ukraine's military folklore and a bunch of larpers

Any book recommendations on the Cossacks? Preferably in English.
>>
River pirates, traders, farmers - there were a diverse group of them. Their form of governing - Sich, armed people's parliament - was the one of first democratic institutions among Slavs, as Novgorodian republic or PLC's parliament, but, in difference, was built on common folk's ground.

"With Fire and Sword" (historical novel of Henryk Sienkiewicz, polish writer, from their national perspective), Tolstoy's novel "The Cossacks", and if you interested in their new history, read "And Quite Flows the Don" of Michail Sholockov about their doings in Russian Revolution.

Also there like "Taras Bulba" of Nicolay Gogol, but I'm not sure if it was translated to English. Taras Shevchenko, Ukrainian greatest poet, writed about them too.

It's not a barbarism, it's common sense for people in power to not become estranged to their people. Also this story is partially just a cool myth, but I like it

Mostly slavs who larped as turks, they started out being mostly tatar, ended being mostly tatarized slavs

>Cossack means "freeman"
great post. but i don't think that's true
>>
Quiet Flows the Don is about Russian/Don Cossacks. Taras Bulba is about Ukrainian/Zaporozhia Cossacks. Cossack is more of a social status of freeman frontier-dweller who fights hunts fishes and produces grain. However due the no-rights serfdom of the Muscowite majority Don Cossacks claimed being separate people. There are also Terek Cossacks, Siberian Cossacks, Volga Cossacks but these are all Don (russian) cossacks. except for Kuban cossacks, they are mostly Ukrainian
>>
You ought to read The Cossacks by Tolstoy
It was written for you
