Quiet Flows the Don is about Russian/Don Cossacks. Taras Bulba is about Ukrainian/Zaporozhia Cossacks. Cossack is more of a social status of freeman frontier-dweller who fights hunts fishes and produces grain. However due the no-rights serfdom of the Muscowite majority Don Cossacks claimed being separate people. There are also Terek Cossacks, Siberian Cossacks, Volga Cossacks but these are all Don (russian) cossacks. except for Kuban cossacks, they are mostly Ukrainian
