Why is the sword a symbol where the spear is not if the later was more profusely and precisely used?
>>16882324Swords were harder to make and therefore more elite. Swords are easier to wear in day to day life and there a more practical social symbol Swords are primarily weapons of war where as spears are used for fishing, hunting and other more mundane tasks.I would say that context matters as well. In many ancient cultures other weapons are very symbolic. The Norse and germanics favoured the war hammer of thor and odinic spear dancer motif. The ancient Romans used the axe as a prominent symbol of powerIn medieval Europe the Ceremonial mace was a popular symbol of authority and power
Spears are a symbol too
>>16882324Because a sword divides things and that is a useful property for metaphor. Like how the Christ identified his people with a sword and so divided the people of the earth into two groups, one so loved by God they are made one with God by the son of God, and the other group which is not them but should still worship the one true God.

>>16882324Sword for raw with enemies in all directionsSpear for discipline within formationsIn modern days, a sword is like a grenade. A bullet like a spear.
>>16882324Swords kill more deader better than spears. It's like shotguns vs rifles... maybe. A shotgun is a lot more lethal than a rifle pound for pound. But troops are equipped with rifles for efficiency, more rounds, etc.A spear is a more efficient military weapon. A sword kills better. When a phalanx breaks you draw your sword and the dying/killing really begins. Also, people would carry swords on their person for self-defense. Not spears, since spears don't fit in a scabbard.
