Interesting, this particular biblical Law:

Exodus 22:2
>[2](2-4) He must pay for what he stole. If he owns nothing, he shall be sold as a slave to pay for what he has stolen. If the stolen animal, whether a cow, a donkey, or a sheep, is found alive in his possession, he shall pay two for one.“If a thief is caught breaking into a house at night and is killed, the one who killed him is not guilty of murder. But if it happens during the day, he is guilty of murder.

This part in particular:

>“If a thief is caught breaking into a house at night and is killed, the one who killed him is not guilty of murder. But if it happens during the day, he is guilty of murder.

So, God approves of you murdering a thief that tries to break into a home at night? And won't condemn you for murder, but only if it's done during the day time? Interesting. Does your city or state have stricter laws compared to this verse? Like, will they twist it around and make you out to be a murderer for defending your home? (Which you ought not to really have to do because of Job 5:24). I know Texas pretty much has similar laws compared to the Exodus 22 verse. Like, even trespassing on the person's lawn without the owner's consent can be a deadly choice, and the state would pardon the owner. But what about other states?

>If he owns nothing, he shall be sold as a slave to pay for what he has stolen.

It's how American prisons are as well. If you're caught stealing something and you're sent to jail, you pretty much become a slave. You're doing sweat shop style jobs for a few cents a day, compared to being free and earning a nice sized paycheck on a weekly basis.

are you still trying to interpret the law according to the letter and not the spirit?

hello 0AD called, it's time to wake up bro

traditional definitions of burglary all included a requirement that it be at night. Sneaking into someone's house at night when they're asleep is just blatantly a more extreme crime than doing the same thing during the day, because the burglar is intended to trespass in a manner that deprives the landowner of any ability to fight back (assuming that the intruder isn't so retarded as to wake the landowner up).
Everyone has to sleep, and we become vulnerable when we sleep. Someone who seeks to prey on this universal vulnerability is more depraved and less capable of being trusted than someone who does not.

Yes and no, for assault
>proportional force must be used unless the attack occurs
>at night OR
>at home OR
>by an armed assailant OR
>by multiple assailants OR
>the defendant is reasonably scared
as for burglars, you can't really do shit, unless they're moving towards you (ties into assault) or won't leave your shit alone when asked (you have to ask first); also they sometimes put people away for leaving out poisoned wine for the thief to drink, weird stuff

The king probably thought. "Corpse during the day = bullshit. Probably some kidnapper murderer. NAILED IT write that down".

Nobody breaks into your tent and tries to steal in broad daylight, they'd be seen by one of the people hanging around and recognized because it isn't dark.

Inviting someone into your tent, then killing them and saying they were a thief is wrong. So you are only allowed to kill thieves at night to ensure this kind of thing doesn't happen.

This cuts down on both the number of murders and thiefs, because most thievery happens at night.
