Why did the 1991 Soviet coup fail? They were sloppy and then they just kinda gave up. What were they thinking? They only furthered the political crisis they were supposedly trying to fix.
>>
Yeltsin stood on a tank and Gorbachev promised everyone they could eat at Pizza Hut and that was it. That was the end of the Soviet Union.

>"I made a mistake that was completely unexpected for me, equivalent to a crime. Yes, it is a mistake, not a belief. I know now that I was deceived in people I trusted very much. It is scary if this outburst of unreasonableness will affect the fates of honest people who found themselves in a very difficult situation. The only justification for what happened could be that our people would unite to end the confrontation. That is the only way it should be. Dear Vadik, Elina, Inna, Mom, Volodya, Geta, Raya, forgive me. This is all a mistake! I have lived honestly - all my life" (Suicide note by Boris Pugo).

Didn't Russians ever regret abandoning communism? From what I've read and documentaries I watched, Russia in the 90s was like a third-world Africa-tier shithole. Was it really all worth it just so they could drink Coca Cola and wear Levis Jeans?

They didn't understand the danger of right-deviationism, even until the end. That was a huge problem in the USSR from Khrushchev onwards, they only cracked down on rightism at its most blatantly counterrevolutionary. Even Gorbachev, who by 1991 had enacted disaster after disaster, still portrayed his actions as "returning to Leninism" and building a more authentic socialism. So the Generals decided to maintain the USSR by trying to restore Gorbachev to power.
Of course by that point Gorbachev had proven himself a complete capitulationist to capitalism, but they hadn't seen that and were caught off guard when he declined to support a restoration of his power. So the movement crumbled.

>My ambition was to liquidate communism, the dictatorship over all the people. Supporting me and urging me on in this mission was my wife, who was of this opinion long before I was. I knew that I could only do this if I was the leading functionary. In this my wife urged me to climb to the top post. While I actually became acquainted with the West, my mind was made up forever. I decided that I must destroy the whole apparatus of the CPSU and the USSR. Also, I must do this in all of the other socialist countries. My ideal is the path of social democracy. Only this system shall benefit all the people. This quest I decided I must fulfil.

>I found friends that had the same thoughts as I in Yakovlev and Shevernadze, they all deserve to be thanked for the break-up of the USSR and the defeat of Communism.

>World without communism is going to be much better. After year 2000 the world will be much better, because it shall develop and prosper. But there are countries which shall try to struggle against this. China for one. I was in Peking during the time of the protests on Tienanmen Square, where I really thought that Communism in China is going to crash. I sternly demanded of the Chinese leadership that I want to speak to the protesters, but they did not allow me to do so. If Communism would fall in China, all the world would be better off, and on the road to peace.

>I wanted to save the USSR, but only under social democracy rule. This I could not do. Yeltsin wanted power, he did not know anything about democracy or what I intended to do. We wanted the democratic USSR to have rights and freedom.

>Then Yeltsin broke up the USSR and at that time I was not in the Kremlin, all the newspaper reporters asked me whether I shall cry? I did not cry, because I really managed to destroy Communism in the USSR, and also in all other European Socialist countries. I did not cry, because I knew that I fulfilled my main aim, that was the defeat of communism in Europe. But you must also know, that communism must be defeated in Asia also, to make the transition quicker to democracy and freedom in the whole world.

>The liquidation of the USSR is not beneficial to the USA, since they have now no mighty democratic country (the former USSR) which I wanted to call the Union of Independent Sovereign Republics. I could not accomplish all of this. All the small countries now are thanking the USA for the help. I wanted the USA and the former USSR to be partners without the scourge of Communism, these could have been the ruling countries of the world. The road towards democracy will be a long one, but it is coming very quickly. The whole world must now defeat the last remnants of communism!

This is from an interview by newspapers with Gorbachev in Ankara, Turkey where he was a guest at a seminar at the American University. It was published in the 'Dialog' newspaper in the Czech Republic. Courtesy: 'Northstar Compass', Toronto, February, 2000.

90's happened because of communism. They shat the bad for 20 years in a row and 90's were the consequence. However, nostalgic boomers are getting everything they want now. No relations with the West, soul crushing totalitarians and meat grinders for their children and grandchildren. There's another 90's coming just around the corner.

>interest rates are at 16%
>likely to hit 18% before the end of the year
>domestic industries all utterly reliant on or supplanted by higher quality European manufacturers Russia no longer has access to
>domestic industry can't even replace valuable control systems in petro processing infrastructure
>same infrastructure that is being bombarded by nigger rigged Ukrainian suicide Cessna drones
>brain drain of skilled labor after the "partial mobilization" but before the borders were secured
>war and war industry is siphoning a huge volume of working age manpower
>turning to migrant labor to plug the gaps in agriculture and construction
>migrant system being abused by islamists to infiltrate the country
>security apparatuses already tied down trying to filter the annexed conquests in Ukraine
>among the first people mobilized were infrastructure maintenance personnel
>infrastructure already breaking down even in wealthy cities, flooded with frozen sewage in winter and rolling power outages in summer
>private companies forming private militias
>sign-on bonuses for contract military personnel has increased by 15-19x depending on region
>food price controls already in place in Kaliningrad with regional governors debating their own versions

Russia in five years is going to be a fucking nightmare

There's also the fact that even China is starting to abandon them, when they see they're a lost cause. Starting next month China abandons Yuan trading on Moscow Exchange, because they don't want to get hit by secondary sanctions. Turns out trading with rest of the world is more profitable than trading with Russia.

Russia is already offering to freely surrender sovereign control over their side of the Tumen River to China (despite the Russian constitution claiming ceding territory to be illegal). its a small gesture but if accepted it will set the precedent for territorial concessions to China, a country that sees much of Far Eastern Russia as historically theirs and desperately wants direct access to the Arctic Sea

China is actively trying to supplant Russian suzerainty in Central Asia while they are fixated on Ukraine as well, it is pretty obvious they smell the desperation to be so flagrantly disrespectful to their "unlimited" partner
