The al-Assads are very very good at political and vital survival and the extension of that, and literally nothing else. Saddam was ambitious and the modern PMF are a reflection of the Arab peoples' will in ways that have never happened in that part of the world, and secular Egypt's army and the Muslim Brotherhood, despite being lumped in with his failures, have both shown that they're very competent and adaptable. The real question is why do we persist in our assumption that Arabs are incompetent and tribal when the latter has proven to be their greatest advantage and the former is a myth pushed by a people who began their ultimate decline the moment they wrote it? Why does it come as a surprise when they not only survive, but thrive?
