Are you on team Nord or team Med when it comes to armor?

I like the Italian helmet better, but prefer the German for the rest.

Nordic armor, or NW European armor in general is very pretty IMO. Meds have been copying it since antiquity for a reason anyway.

Transitional period armor is actually the most kino. The second most is mid15th century English field plate for the fighting man.

Why did armor suddenly and totally die out in the 18th century? Were the guns in the 18th century way better than the guns of the 17th century or something?
>>
>>16888469
The beginning of the 18th century is right when pikemen really started to be phased out because the bayonet was invented. So now there were no melee infantry in almost any European armies anymore. I don't know exactly if that's why armor stopped being worn though but it would make sense I think.

More men = more guns
Armoring a bunch of men is a lot more expensive than wool uniforms
>>
>>16888497
But they stopped armoring even generals on the battlefield. If it was only due to cost why would they do that?
>>
>>16888469
Guns became more commonplace and the production of gunpowder increased as well (and became better quality wise). There were still cuirasses around, which were mainly used by cuirassiers or sappers but for the common soldier there was no need.
>>16888538
If a general needs to rely on armor, then he fucked up greatly.

Bro the iconic helmet might literally be designed after late Roman era helmets.
Tho I agree that it’s the most aesthetic helmet out there and I’m mad that Germanic Europe outside of Scandinavia and Brits didn’t adopt it
>>
>>16888333
I agree. I am currently loving the Vendel era stuff and archeological finds like Raedwald's burial. Honestly the early Germanic clothing is my favorite thing. Later medieval and early modern stuff looks really ugly in comparison IMO.

IIRC there was so much cross cultural exchange between the two of them that its kind of hard to tell where one begins, but I would lean towards it being more of a Germanic design due to the fact the late Roman army adopted mostly everything from them, including their clothing and puttees. There is a muriel of a red haired, late Roman wearing a Tunic with a swastika design on it, wearing puttees and holding a round shield and spear. I lost it as it was on my old PC but it was pretty cool.

the Sallet helmet is the best thing about it

You can't really wear it IRL, too heavy.
However, there's a reason they have a huge feather at the top of their helmet.

The sallet is also an Italian invention btw. Both Germans and Italians wore sallets. The only difference was the shape.

It's a completely arbitrary separation, every style of piece was made in every euro region.
That said, I like the germ chest, hips and arms armor, the med legs armor, chain mail, padding, cape and helms 3-4.
I like the germ ridges and the med enamel. Weapons should be the same for both but they're on the germ side so it's a w for germs.
