The question of the /his/toricity of the Trojan war is a compelling topic. I take up the view that the Trojan war is semi-historical semi-legendary. The notion of a war occurring between the Myceneans and the city-state of Troy is not exactly implausible, but the question of whether Agamemnon was the leader of a coalition of Mycenean forces is questionable and the scale of the war also seems quite difficult to believe. What does /his/ think?

The ‘Trojan war’ is a descendant of a much older Indo-European epic. Nearly all of the main characters and events can be observed in various forms in other epics found in Celtic and Indian cultures.

That's not Troy

Homer (or whoever wrote the Iliad) wanted to write a story set in the late bronze age, but didn't know that much about it, so some aspects of the story instead reflect the author's own time.
Mycenean activity in Anatolia is well attested from Hittite archives. But even the idea that they sacked Troy is kind of difficult (it doesn't seem to have been burnt at the right time, but after Mycenae already collapsed.)
I wonder if the story got fixed to Troy because it was the most famous city of the region, or maybe they didn't sack the place but it made for a better story than a raid. Alternatively, it was sacked by post-collapse exiles, Greeks going Sea People, and the chronology got a bit confused.

Where is Troy?

The dude who descovered Troy followed Homers geographic descriptions of the area, also arrowheads from the greek heroic era were found in the burnt ruins

The Iliad was a written down oral tradition that was centuries years old. Homer didn't just make it up.
