Gay Anglicans are notorious for being very high church and often eventually converting to Catholicism and that's something that goes all the way back to the 19th century. There is a lot of very visual focus on suffering and shame on the part of attractive men in the Catholic artistic tradition too so that gives the religion kind of a gay sadomasochistic edge and lets the repressed, ashamed gay guy easily project into St. Sebastian or Jesus himself or whoever.
