Really I don't think there's a consensus on Hell either. Because they aren't physical places and their inhabitants aren't physical creatures. And the way Hell is talked about in the Bible (sheol/gehenna/etc.) it's hard to know what to take literally.

Also I know some of the weirder Christian denominations like Mormons and Jehovah's witnesses have a radically different idea of what the afterlife entails. Witnesses don't believe in Hell, for example. I wonder if there are differences between more mainstream denominations.

Mostly I just don't think it matters too much. One of those things I chalk up to being largely unknowable in our current forms. Just be good and get the good end and try to avoid the bad end. You'll understand when you get there.
