Part of the whole reason why the system unraveled was explicitly because the 1980s was a bad decade for the East across the board, with de facto recession conditions plaguing most WP countries (Poland is the one I'm most intimately familiar with at least, but I can't imagine the GDR was doing much better when the country fell apart over a badly organized press conference)
