More a kind of "instrumental reason" that is rational within its own social logic and involves status, respect, dignity, and sometimes survival of the group. Not to say it's divorced from reason or that one engages in violence for no reason. You see in the American South, in the Pacific, Japan (historically), various places. Men also have certain responsibilities to protect their family, their kids, their community, their country, etc. The Enlightenment was all about individual autonomy. A person is instead an independent, rational agent and moral principles are based on universal human rights and reason rather than familial or social obligations.I don't think either is "good" or "bad" necessarily, they each have their positives and negatives.

In the Middle East, the Arabs have struggled for decades to cope with Israel which seems to combine elements of both the "trad" stuff (self-discipline, a religion, individuals engaging in self-sacrifice for the group) and modern "liberal" stuff which involves rejecting many of their own traditions. Zionism represented a radical break from traditional Jewry, was very much tied up in Enlightenment values which produced nationalism and also the idea of Jewish self-determination in a nation-state, and one of the culture wars they have is over whether the real trad Jews, the ultra-Orthodox, should serve in the military.
