There was a famine that occurred in the USSR during Stalin's reign, that much is understood. The hardest areas affected were Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. The real question is if it was created on purpose to quell independence movements like Ukraine's or if it was just Communist economic incompetence (spoiler, it's the latter.)
