He ran for president on the Democrat ticket in 1848 and lost to Zachary Taylor. Later appointed Secretary of State by James Buchanan--at age 75 he was mostly expected to be a figurehead but proved more active in his job than had been assumed. Cass resigned from office at the end of 1860 out of displeasure with Buchanan's passivity at South Carolina's secession from the union.
Eugène-François Vidocq comes to mind. That guy lived as an outlaw through the French Revolution, the Napoleonic era and the Bourbon restoration and ended up inventing CSI.

That said, Buchanan and Cass did not particularly like each other out of political rivalries; Buchanan had first sought the presidency in 1848 and watched the Democrat nomination go to Cass instead, and Cass, the loser of that election, eventually had to watch Buchanan become president.
