>The 1884 presidential contest was an ugly one marred by a good deal of name calling and personal attacks especially directed on Cleveland, accused of being a draft dodger in the Civil War and a sex pest who fathered an illegitimate child in his home town of Buffalo (Cleveland admitted the child in question was his and took full responsibility for it). The result hinged on key battleground state New York, when a Presbyterian minister at an election rally made an ill-timed remark calling Democrats "the party of rum, Romanism, and rebellion" which got out. Republican candidate James Blaine (who as it turned out also avoided service in the Civil War) did not personally utter the anti-Catholic remark but was present at the rally and it was used to motivate the crucial Irish vote which helped tip the Empire State and the election to Cleveland, making him the first Democrat elected to the White House in 28 years.
