Prison rape was more of a problem in the 80s-90s and until George W. Bush supported efforts to curb prison violence, so it's gotten better than it once was. Also there's a regional difference in that Northeastern prisons are more civilized than the ones in the South and West which have a lot more violence/prison gangs in them.
