Chronic Illness
Herod suffered from a painful and gruesome illness.

Symptoms included:
- severe abdominal pain
- gangrene in his genitals
- worms in his intestines
- breathing difficulties and convulsions

Modern historians and medical experts have speculated that his condition may have been chronic kidney disease, gangrene, or a combination of Fournier's gangrene and scabies.

Mental State
Herod became increasingly paranoid and violent in his final years. He ordered the execution of several of his own sons and other family members out of fear of plots against him.

Death
According to Josephus, Herod attempted suicide but was stopped by his guards. He also arranged for prominent Jews to be executed upon his death to ensure the nation mourned his passing, but this command was not carried out.

Herod is believed to have died in 4 BCE in Jericho, and he was buried in Herodium, a fortified palace complex he had built.
