Is this a good summary of what a Westerner should know about China? I haven't read much on the subject since AP World History over a decade ago
>>17427781I have only read diplomacy, but from that book I can tell you Kissinger writes as a political scientist rather than historian. Diplomacy is full of half truths and poorly sourced claims that contribute to a broad argument on the nature of diplomacy throughout history. So if you are concerned about the intricacies of Chinese history/culture no, otherwise yes
>>17427781i read an excellent book last year called myself a mandarin. it's about british hong kong, but it's a memoir of a british man who has to mediate as a judge in legal disputes amongst the chinese population of hong kong. you may not be interested about that, but i think the author makes some pretty important and succinct points about westerners' roles in chinese culture, and the book is a very easy read.his point, if you don't want to read it, is basically the chinese way of thinking isn't really incompatiable with western thinking, but everything they do and say to achieve a goal or outcome they want only makes sense if you ARE chinese. 90% of the stories in the book boil down to a misunderstanding in purpose or execution because the chinese will phrase it one way, the british/westerners will interpret it incorrectly or try to go about a solution in "their way", and then everyone has to start over and really drill down deep to get to the root of the problem and then try to solve it from there. his ultimate point is anything a westerner does or contributes to china is nothing more than a drop of saline in an ocean of history, culture, and tradition, and you must accept this if you ever wish to actually meanginfully interact.
>>17427781Probably worth reading if you want to better understand how the modern China problem started, from the rose-tinted perspective of the self-fellating cocksucker who caused it.
>>17429396this. why would you read such an obviously biased POV to "learn" what a Westerner should know about China?

>>17430803Kissinger insisted on recording virtually every word he said to keep track of what lies he told to whom. He put Pinochet and handed a list of leftist US citizens to Pinochet's thugs. Gave the green light under pressure and failed to condemn political torture in Brazil. Approved the invasion of Cyprus that killed 10,000 people. Gave the green light to the murder of 30,000 people in Argentina, saying it was OK if they did it quickly..... Personally authorized multiple bombings of densely populated areas, 500,000 dead, leading to Pol Pot's rise to power. Pushed many Kurds into revolution, only to stab them in the back at the last minute and leave them at the mercy of Saddam Hussein. Gave armed support to Pakistan the day after they started raping Bengal..... It killed more people than the Holocaust, but it was also a literal violent jihad - 400,000 girls were raped in a systematic campaign of genocide. Supported Condor's death sentence, 80000 Latinos died, Henry refused to punish the murderers. Gave Suharto the go-ahead for two genocides in Indonesia because he was a stragic ally. Henry approved the invasion of 20 African countries - he was the father of the whole bloody continent for years, from Ethiopia to Mozambique, Angola to Burundi, with tens of millions of deaths and injuries. Made an agreement to let Chilean juntas rape political opponents, including 10 year old girls. 4 million were tortured. Kissinger was the key guy for all that. Also, won the Nobel Peace Prize for being a master of geopolitics.
