Nobody was in the right.
Iran had been provoking Iraq for years, inciting the Kurds, trying to muscle Iraq out of its share of the Shatt al-Arab, outright bombarding Iraqi settlements in some cases.
But the war itself was a pretty naked attempt at a cynical land grab by Saddam, one that he could use in order to shore up his popularity right after assuming power.
Most wars are like this.

Iraq. Iran deserved to annex all of Shia majority, southern Iraq. Historically speaking, it was their land for hundreds of years. But or course, the typical islamist Shia Iran leadership was incredibly incompetent and fought like your average ISIS soldiers
