I think he had a literal sexual fetish for seppuku. I heard some story that he used to invite guys over and not have sex with them but instead roleplay the whole seppuku process and he would cum hands free from that. I'm sure he got some kind of thrill out of doing it for real. Obviously that's not the only reason he did it, there were many reasons and I think he genuinely believed in all that stuff about the samurai code and whatever the fuck but like you said, one of the most important things was probably just that he wanted a reason to kill himself publicly and spectacularly.
