How and where exactly did the Chinese come up with their rendition of the dragon and come to worship it as a God? Is it just an amalgamation of different Reptiles?

"Dragons" were an actual reptilian animal that went extinct in China sometime during Zhou. Extant records mention that the Xia dynasty kept "dragons" in their zoos, and it wouldn't have made sense for the 12 animals to have chosen 11 real and 1 mythical. Elephants also used to be in China before going extinct, and in modern times tigers are almost extinct in China, but no one would call elephants or tigers mythical.
