Because these were the ones the west "educated" but then didn't give responsabilities to, and that became discontent of that and fought for independance. Ghandi was more trad, but wasn't of their little clique (the Congress) of westerned modernist leftist minds (even though he also was one of those people educated in the west). Indira Ghandi - only child of Nehru the not-so-fertile - was a complete hoe and a monsterous dictator killed righteously by sikh chads. The far right hindu movement came later, and are now more in power with Modi. So now they started to construct at least nice great big buldings for culture and religion, for exemple the temple of ram in Ayodhya (made on the emplacement of a mosque that was constructed on an older hindu holy site (I think a temple)).
