Germans were weakened to the point they could never launch another attack on the USSR for the foreseeable future and establish a buffer between them and the Western allies.

The USSR should have stopped at the national border, then when they developed nukes dropped them on the 10 largest German cities (whether or not the war was over, they were occupies by the western allies, etc).
