Were the nobility of medieval times elitist/preoccupied with their tastes in consumer goods like wine, cheese, cuisine in general, or did that sort of thing only come about after the arrival of the bourgeoise class? Obviously at some point they either did or retroactively incorporated such status symbols into their own class after merchants//capitalists etc showed up, kings in the 1800s has such tastes, but I mean prior to their arrival, was this sort of thing - a thing?
Any nobles that could afford would make gaudy displays of luxurious, exotic and spicy foods. Got spices? Stuff it everywhere in huge amounts. Got sugar? Make fucking birb sculpture out of it. Medieval palate could stomach far heavier flavours than today.
