>>18241609I've lived in both Alsace and Lorraine and both are heavily frenchified nowadays but in Alsace there's still a small amount of people who speak alsatian, especially in the countryside and interestingly many of those who don't speak it have an alsatian accent somehow (they tend to pronounce the "h" for exemple which french speakers usually don't do) , and there are attempts to save alsatian through german language tv programs for exemple.Meanwhile in Lorraine I've never encountered a single franconian speaker, despite having lived for years in Thionville as a cross border worker in Luxembourg, where franconian is supposed to be spoken, there's honestly nothing german left there except some except some german soundint last names like Müller or Schneider

They also don't really have fond memories of the German Empire era since it was essentially a Prussian occupation and within Germany itself other non-Prussians were already kinda miffed at the idea of being ruled by Prussia (Bavaria's pride is already well known, but "Zwangspreußen" like the Rheinlanders also had some lingering resentment, hence Adenauer's famous disdain for anything east of the Elbe)
