My personal favourite is Princess Monoke so I'd start from this. Then maybe My neighbour Totoro. Sadly I was never a fan of Spirited Away but the 'One summer's day' is my no 1 song from their movies.
>>
Watching old ghibli movies make me appreciate how they can make girl have their weak feminine side and still courageous in Spirited away and Castle in the Sky, unlike those modern woke trash movies where they just try to make a woman to be a man.

It's a large body of work with a variety of storytelling. Mostly it's kidsafe family stuff (often called "the Disney of Japan" for good reason).

I'd warn "Grave of the Fireflies" is a borderline horror film, specifically designed to showcase the horror of war and especially the atomic bomb. It's NOT light watching for anyone. It *IS* highly recommended, but you probably want to watch something right after that (like My Neighbor Totoro) to decompress and find your happy place again.

Apart from that, you're more likely to get a sugar overdose from some because they are targeted as children's movies. Still beautiful, but sometimes lack content to keep adults interested.

Start here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Studio_Ghibli_works
https://ghiblicollection.com/pages/filmography
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls066662290/

My recommendations for starting (roughly in order):
Spirited Away
When Marnie Was There
Princess Mononoke
Secret World of Arrietty
Kiki's Delivery Service
Whisper of the Heart
Porco Rosso

They are not *all* of the best, just *most* of the best. IMHO, and I've not watched about half a dozen.
Yet.

Technically, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) is not Ghibli, but it's one of my favorite anime of all time and it's clearly part of Ghibli history & origins:
>Directed by Hayao Miyazaki based on his own manga; Produced by Isao Takahata; Featuring several of the animators and futures collaborators of the Studio. While not a Ghibli production it is generally considered the team's first production.

BTW, if you like Nausicaä, there's this non-Ghibli related anime that is outstanding for it's story, art & somewhat similar theme:

HOWEVER.

Let's not be gross. Keep it tasteful, within reason. Please. A little bit of sexxo is always fun, but let's not get extreme or deep fetish about it. Quality counts, especially since we're in a Ghibli thread dedicated to some of the highest quality anime art ever produced.

The dubs on Nausicaa and Arrietty are actually quite good. Patrick Stewart is in Nausicaa, and Ghibli has invested in solid voice actors/actresses for at least the last two decades. I personally prefer subs and original Japanese language, but shitting on dubs for Ghibli films is retarded. Arietty has two English dubs, one in American accented English and one in British by two entirely different sets of voice actors. The American dub is OKay to decent, about good. But the British one is pretty fucking good and well worth the experience.

I also caution on Totoro: It's a great movie, quite magical and essential watching. But, it is directed at very young audiences. It's entertaining for adults, but best enjoyed with children rather than viewing alone. It's sometimes difficult to maintain full immersion as if being a seven-year old.

I guess, while burning a post, I'll mention >>4773784; this is a retarded take. Marnie is a very solid Ghibli offering. It's a coming of age tale that is also a ghost story across time, with outstanding art and generally very realistic plot. I re-watched it just recently and it was even better on the re-watch (after about 5 or 6 years). There were maybe two scenes that were slightly forced and should have been done better (less monologue, more creative reveal of information to progress the plot). Overall, it's a standard Ghibli quality film, comparable to something like Spirited Away without the entire Japanese spirit world but still a bit of a supernatural thriller.

Tales of Earthsea by Goro Miyazaki.
Nausicaa is still great but just like with Akira, it's a shame that Miyazaki had to cut like 2/3 of the manga story.

Nausicaa is just exceptional, it's understandable that Miyazaki didn't want to do much manga afterwards as it's painstakingly detailed. But story, character arcs, drawings, sense of action, etc. Everything is great. One of the best manga I've read no doubt, can't recommend it enough. Less iconic than say Akira but hardly inferior if in a totally different vibe.

Very much like Sora no Woto >>4767467, it's a 'generic European' location. Most anime doesn't use a perfectly 'real' world, just a mash-up of elements that come from our real world with various fantasy modifications convenient for the story. Very common Japanese approach which is both a touch lazy (by stealing all sorts of real-world history & background that doesn't need to be re-invented) and something of a tribute & honor system to give a nod to Cool Stuff. There are so many anime plots that do that it's hard to stop listing them once you really get started.

Nausicaa always struck me as located somewhere in Asia, but using European elements for technology and society. I'm not claiming I'm correct, but it sort of fits with modern Japan being so heavily Westernized that the story occurs after an apocalyptic war on top of a global environmental catastrophe ... which would be a fair bit in "our" future, so cross-pollination between Japan/Asian society with European elements would be a logical beginning place for the collapse that preceded Nausicaa by a few centuries, especially when you fold in the unusually advanced tech we see in Nausicaa that we don't have.

"The Valley of the Wind" (mountains) should also be a clue that it is the opposite of the Netherlands (below sea level). If it's in the Europe of our Earth, it's probably somewhere in the Mediterranean, like Italy, the Balkans, Greece, etc. Windmills are nearly universal globally for 3000+ years now.

Sora no Woto offers different clues through uniforms, language, tech, architecture, etc. Definitely Europe (and Germanic on one side), perhaps Swiss/France deep in the mountains. Nausicaa leans much more fantasy, could be anywhere. Both stories specifically note that the seas are dead & poisoned. The fact that ANYONE is alive is pure fantasy with that plot point established as canon.

Nausicaa is my favourite Miyazaki film that is his own properties, and was the success that allowed him to start his own studio.

My favourite animated movie of all time, though, is the earlier Lupin III and the Castle of Cagliostro ... which, among all the Lupin capers, has the most Miyazki magic in it.

Beyond the unhelpful answers of 'anime' or 'Studio Ghibli', is there a particular name for this sort of art style?
>>
Nausicaa (/nɔːˈsJkJə/; Ancient Greek: Ναυσικάα, romanized: Nausikáa, or Ναυσικᾶ, Nausikâ [nau̯sikâː]), also spelled Nausicaä or Nausikaa, is a character in Homer's Odyssey. She is the daughter of King Alcinous and Queen Arete of Phaeacia. Her name means "burner of ships" (ναῦς 'ship'; κάω 'to burn').

In the Odyssey she ahs the name "burner of ships" and in the anime she burns airships.
