Watched dragon ball in its entirety a few years ago. Was awesome favorite moments were goku vs krillin in the tournament, goku v tien and the finally goku winning the tournament after blowing up the entire venue.

That being said, it made more sense to me for Raditz to take Vegeta's role in the story. Get rid of the prince aspect, make the strength levels go Raditz>Vegeta>Napa, have Napa get sent to earth in the beginning, Vegeta fight the Z fighters until Goku shows up. Goku beats Vegeta, then fights Raditz, the rest of the story has Raditz taking what would be Vegeta's role in the rest of the story.

When it comes to their compatibility, the whole 'fighting' thing is actually a distraction. Take that away and they're actually pretty similar.
