First Practice assignment is the Pendulumthe main focus of this practice is to understand slow-ins and slow-outseach swing is 12 frames and how they're spaced is what makes or breaks the movement
here's a version with my staging frame in itto give a rough idea of how proper spacing makes the movement look real
>>7359206 frames each swing.
>>73592012 frames, first attempt
>>736248work on the spacing anonthe frames are to equi-distantremember the weight of the pendulum slows it down as it reaches the extremeit almost reaches a stand still before it gains speed again towards the other direction
>>736256how's this?
>>736268much better now the pendulum has weight to itmaybe decrease how far the pendulum swings (the main key frames)but overall its good you've done well anon : DDD
now we tie a string to the tip of thependulum pretty annoying to get just right but its integral the staging for this should look like a sideways 8 remember failing is fun if it isnt working try again after a 15 min break to get a fresh start sometimes taking a short break is better than slamming out head into a wall
>>736633here's the ver w/ the stagingdont take the key marks for reference cause i ended up adjusting the thread itself later to keep the length relatively same throughout with minimal stretchingdont be afraid to use staging its the professional way to do it using staging doesnt amke you any less as an animator meanwhile staging isnt everything sometimes you gotta make changes that might go against the staging and that's fineits a guideline not strict rule
shortened the string and improved the line thicknessthe previous version looked like it was rubbing against the floor
pose shitposti've noticed you can make movement from any disjointed pose look smooth if you apply ease in and ease out at the appropriate rangesthe mind does the majority of the legwork and fills in the blanks for you if you do it just righti gleamed this by obsessively watching fullmetal alchemist fight scenes on loopits always just really well drawn poses with minimal animation inbetween yet it looks so fkin goodthey only splurge the frame budget when there's emphasis on the surrounding reacting to their action be it the debris or the transmuted concrete/metalleave it to the japs to optimize the techniquethe more i learn the more i realize how i little i actually know
>>736964follow up for this practice a practical application of the principle in an actual character actionbeen sitting on this swing animation for an embarrasing amount of timefinally got around to making a proper versionalbeit could've made the swing arc wider and the character smaller for more emphasis on movement but for now im satisfied>>736970should've moved the head when he does the slitting neck gesture would've felt more organicalso a singular horizon lie would've helped imphasize the zoom ins and zoom outsthe character should've zoomed out further back before the explosion should've aded more frames for the explosion and the following smokeshould've leaned the smoke in one direction to denote slight windcould've optimized pacing a lot more
>>737178here's a the staging layers i animated the character in a static pose first then manually aligned it with the swing for some semblance of char cohesion looking at it closely there's plenty of faults in this onereally need to nut up or shut up with this one-gotta widen the swing arc-shrink the character down and fix the leg (animated the feet as secondary action as if the char is just going with the flow rather than actively swinging back and forth using body and leg shifting to propel itself)i'll redo a fixed version later
fixed the char acting and did a lil camera workvery satisfied with the imp[rovement : DDD
here's version with the staging layerdid the swing first then the character then aligned character with the swinggood times
>>737251Very impressive
Next excercise is the good ol and reliable ball bouncenothing too crazy just good ol squash n strech keyframes with ease in and ease out to convey the ball's squishinessmostly an easy cop out cuz i dun wanna do a difficult thing right out of the swing headachewill do a dif vers next idk how i'll go bout it maybe a silly round character or something>>737373very nice
here's the stagingi used a manually drawn grid for shadow referenceand kept a base ball shape in the bg to trace over/reference when drawing the squash and stretch frameswhen making squash n stretch frames it is important to not lose mass for the ball it needs to be evenlike a rubber balloon full of water if i squish it between my hands its edges bulge out to accomodate so though it changes shape it still carries the same amount of watersame principle applies for squash/stretch frames unless some perspective is involved its better to keep this rule in mind for good looking frames
I am about 3/4 through the inking now (what I am posting in not the current version) but I am almost done with this animation now. Because I have been working on it on and off, this is about 2 months in the making.
>>737425And now I finished it.
Are NSFW gifs allowed this is a nsfw friendly board right?
Next excercise is the wave principleyou'd think drawing a simple wave would be easy and it is but applying it in action to say like a flag is incredibly difficultfor a standard wave you just gotta imagine it like a wavy wire bing pushed to one side when inbetweeningbut for a flag one side's attached to a pole and the other side flails around wildly so you gotta eyeball it or use a special trick to make it work
and special trick is the good ol pendulum principlewhat is flag if not a sideways pendulum
thinking of the flag as a series of pendulums attatched in a chain somewhat helps visualize it
today's freebie excercisealso there's another more mechanical way of making a flag waving flag animation so ill do that next

Interesting thread. I want to get into animating, and never knew how people did it these days. The "staging frame" makes a lot more sense to me than redrawing it layer by layer!
>>740507i think you mean key-frames there's ways to go about it anon some go pose to pose (drawing the key poses first and adding in-betweens later)some prefer straight ahead animation (drawing the frame immediately after the current one all the way to the end)both have their own uses pose to pose is good for character animation since that way you can ensure that the character remains on modelstraight ahead animation is good for animating effects like smoke/fire/splases of liquid etcif you are interested look up the "12 principles of animation" on YT
koπ bump
so uhh
Made this for a /co/ animator thread which died shortly after.
>>740023>>740025>>740039>>740206>>740219All of these are really good, do you have an account anywhere online where you post art?
>>743017i go by @Kott_Chad on twitterbut mostly post here
Doing little tests to see what kind of style I want to go for as I begin to animate an bigger cartoon. This is a "pencil" type look where I was going to do this and have the entire thing take place on a page of a notebook. I don't know if I like the style or not. It's growing on me.
Much more if you want dancing artwork.

this counts right?
simple animation
>>735920fuck your pendulum
>>744456cute >>743820neat>>743794yep also very cool>>743731cool>>743300looks cool enough

>>745969That’s sickOekaki Post (Time: 2m, Replay: View)
thank youOekaki Post (Time: 2m, Replay: View)
I did this yesterday
i'll post my shit short film tomorrowstill got a day to complete as much as i can
Trying to learn Flash, and I made this as a little test. The body is frame by frame (or at least, the lines where the body should be), but everything else is flash symbols. I feel I didn't make the movements "big" enough, but this is my first attempt at flash, so next time I know where I made the mistake.
here's some vent porn i made cuz my short film got repetative i needed to let off some steamshe's the damsel in distress of the short
>>748510cery cool anim, i see you also used mask for the head and shoes? one advice i could give would be to use a different head pose or faccial expression when he flail his arms
>>748525anotherturns out just breathing heavy/panting can be just as erotic
>>748528jiggle physics
kott spin
>>748526I only have the one expression for the puppet so far, ha ha. I am making more, I just have to... So it. I wanted to test how an animation would look using tweens.
inspired by this cute doodle >>749704had fun making it : DDDD
>>748535Lovely stuff.
>>749883thank you : DDD
>>749861Holy based
here's my first assignment from the itern bootcamp listthe directive was to apply the pendulum principle of spacing onto a non-pendulum subjectI went with one of them chibi joyrides as a theme
>>751730I'll polish it a bit more namely the color scheme and the beackground/foreground to add more life to the piecehere's the staging layer that i rendered too cuz i think it looks cool
I have one of those digital boards you can draw on with no erasing except one button that wipes the whole thing. I decided to challenge myself to animate on it.(Pictures are inverted, as the board is naturally green on black, but it's shit for visibility)
>>751730follow-up to this
>>752460thats very interesting medium anontruly people will, if given enough time find a way to animate on literally anythingbtw what app/program did you use to stitch the individual images together?>>752461there's more : DDD
>>752463lost the original file on this one and can't be arsed to redo ithere's the surviving jittery render
>>752463I used EZGIF. I use it for when I do story time or animated shit on Gary C's Sketch.
>>752465this is really good comedic timing actually great job anon : D
>>747366You should be animating more, finishing motion, and doing more key movements before you start rendering. It's very jilted, albeit it's serviceable
this is what took me an entire week to make from scratchim proud of this silly elephant animation : DDD
>>753894sovl
motorpen doodle gotta do more of these
i'll post a turn around tomorrow i swearhave silly doodle bump 4 now

Did this on GaryC's Sketch Swap site because I'm a crazy person who enjoys torturing myself.

>>758371do u have a channel/blog or something
>>758376I have a Twitter (@OshMakes), but like, I don't do anything with it except like post random shit every now and again. I want to post an image so here is a slightly-less-animated one I did a little bit ago.
>>758372perfectloop
Part of a bigger toon I'm making, but the wall cycle makes me laugh, so I'm posting it.
