First Practice assignment is the Pendulum
the main focus of this practice is to understand slow-ins and slow-outs
each swing is 12 frames and how they're spaced is what makes or breaks the movement

here's a version with my staging frame in it
to give a rough idea of how proper spacing makes the movement look real

work on the spacing anon
the frames are to equi-distant
remember the weight of the pendulum slows it down as it reaches the extreme
it almost reaches a stand still before it gains speed again towards the other direction

much better now the pendulum has weight to it
maybe decrease how far the pendulum swings (the main key frames)
but overall its good you've done well anon : DDD

now we tie a string to the tip of thependulum
pretty annoying to get just right but its integral
the staging for this should look like a sideways 8
remember failing is fun
if it isnt working try again after a 15 min break to get a fresh start
sometimes taking a short break is better than slamming out head into a wall
>>
>>736633
here's the ver w/ the staging
dont take the key marks for reference cause i ended up adjusting the thread itself later to keep the length relatively same throughout with minimal stretching
dont be afraid to use staging its the professional way to do it using staging doesnt amke you any less as an animator
meanwhile staging isnt everything sometimes you gotta make changes that might go against the staging and that's fine
its a guideline not strict rule
>>
shortened the string and improved the line thickness
the previous version looked like it was rubbing against the floor

pose shitpost
i've noticed you can make movement from any disjointed pose look smooth if you apply ease in and ease out at the appropriate ranges
the mind does the majority of the legwork and fills in the blanks for you if you do it just right

i gleamed this by obsessively watching fullmetal alchemist fight scenes on loop
its always just really well drawn poses with minimal animation inbetween yet it looks so fkin good
they only splurge the frame budget when there's emphasis on the surrounding reacting to their action be it the debris or the transmuted concrete/metal
leave it to the japs to optimize the technique

the more i learn the more i realize how i little i actually know

follow up for this practice a practical application of the principle in an actual character action
been sitting on this swing animation for an embarrasing amount of time
finally got around to making a proper version
albeit could've made the swing arc wider and the character smaller for more emphasis on movement but for now im satisfied

>>736970
should've moved the head when he does the slitting neck gesture would've felt more organic
also a singular horizon lie would've helped imphasize the zoom ins and zoom outs
the character should've zoomed out further back before the explosion
should've aded more frames for the explosion and the following smoke
should've leaned the smoke in one direction to denote slight wind
could've optimized pacing a lot more

here's a the staging layers i animated the character in a static pose first then manually aligned it with the swing for some semblance of char cohesion
looking at it closely there's plenty of faults in this one
really need to nut up or shut up with this one
-gotta widen the swing arc
-shrink the character down and fix the leg (animated the feet as secondary action as if the char is just going with the flow rather than actively swinging back and forth using body and leg shifting to propel itself)
i'll redo a fixed version later

Next excercise is the good ol and reliable ball bounce
nothing too crazy just good ol squash n strech keyframes with ease in and ease out to convey the ball's squishiness
mostly an easy cop out cuz i dun wanna do a difficult thing right out of the swing headache
will do a dif vers next idk how i'll go bout it maybe a silly round character or something

>>737373
very nice
>>
File: Ball-bounce-v1-staging.gif (1.38 MB, 960x540)
1.38 MB
1.38 MB GIF
here's the staging
i used a manually drawn grid for shadow reference
and kept a base ball shape in the bg to trace over/reference when drawing the squash and stretch frames
when making squash n stretch frames it is important to not lose mass for the ball it needs to be even
like a rubber balloon full of water if i squish it between my hands its edges bulge out to accomodate so though it changes shape it still carries the same amount of water
same principle applies for squash/stretch frames
unless some perspective is involved its better to keep this rule in mind for good looking frames

Next excercise is the wave principle
you'd think drawing a simple wave would be easy and it is
but applying it in action to say like a flag is incredibly difficult
for a standard wave you just gotta imagine it like a wavy wire bing pushed to one side when inbetweening
but for a flag one side's attached to a pole and the other side flails around wildly so you gotta eyeball it or use a special trick to make it work
>>
and special trick is the good ol pendulum principle
what is flag if not a sideways pendulum

Interesting thread. I want to get into animating, and never knew how people did it these days. The "staging frame" makes a lot more sense to me than redrawing it layer by layer!
>>
>>740507
i think you mean key-frames
there's ways to go about it anon
some go pose to pose (drawing the key poses first and adding in-betweens later)
some prefer straight ahead animation (drawing the frame immediately after the current one all the way to the end)
both have their own uses pose to pose is good for character animation since that way you can ensure that the character remains on model
straight ahead animation is good for animating effects like smoke/fire/splases of liquid etc
if you are interested look up the "12 principles of animation" on YT

Doing little tests to see what kind of style I want to go for as I begin to animate an bigger cartoon. This is a "pencil" type look where I was going to do this and have the entire thing take place on a page of a notebook. I don't know if I like the style or not. It's growing on me.

Trying to learn Flash, and I made this as a little test. The body is frame by frame (or at least, the lines where the body should be), but everything else is flash symbols. I feel I didn't make the movements "big" enough, but this is my first attempt at flash, so next time I know where I made the mistake.
